love the implication that there are hordes of moderates/Dem voters who think Trump is a normal and reasonable guy who is being persecuted for political reasons. funny how that logic only applies to Trump and not Hillary or Biden

xpost Trump's primary legacy will be the ease with which he dropped a nuke into the very heart of epistemology. Constituent reality and reasoned argument are going to be nursing their wounds for decades to come and may never fully return to their pre-2006 state.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 15:33 (two years ago)

^^^ yeah from faked moon landings, to flat-earthers, to JFK Jr.'s return, to Biden really being an imposter in a rubber mask (friend of mine's brother fully believes that last one) truth has taken a hard hit.

BREAKING: Former President Trump will have his mugshot taken when he’s arraigned in Fulton County Georgia, per Sheriff Pat Labat.

— Reda (@RedaMor_) August 15, 2023

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 15:52 (two years ago)

Trump will probably sell his own mugshot T-shirts saying FRAMED or something. If anyone's going to make money off his face surely he'll want a cut.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

He's going to sell "framed" copies of his mugshot, and if he doesn't, someone should.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 16:07 (two years ago)

Wait, Sheriff Pat Labat? That's awesome.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 16:08 (two years ago)

I can reveal that Sheriff Pat owns two rescue pups named Rico Hugo & Finesse.

just catching up on news, just saw that 18 others were charged. fuck yes. fuck all of these people.

are there any other ga-style investigations going on in other states? there is 0% chance that trump and gang of total idiots didn't try to do the same thing in several states

z_tbd, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 18:57 (two years ago)

I wonder how many of those 18 are gonna take deals to testify... probably more than a few, now that they know just where this is going

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 19:08 (two years ago)

And Trump can't even promise them pardons to dissuade them. (Which is probably a good thing for him, because he definitely would and it would definitely leak and then he'd get charged with bribery on top of everything else.)

the only similar case I know of is the one in which fake electors were charged in Michigan

I am not a lawyer, but I imagine it's rare for many people to plead guilty right off the bat. You start with
"not guilty" and then you have some I guess in a sense negative leverage. That is, you can offer a guilty plea in return for deals/perks/giving the prosecutor an automatic win while saving them the time and resources. Plead guilty from the start and you don't get jack.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 19:53 (two years ago)

Trump said Tuesday that he plans to reveal his “large, complex, detailed, but irrefutable” report at a press conference in Bedminster, N.J., next Monday, noting this report should result in the charges dropped against him and 18 others in (Georgia)...

Haha... hopefully written by Devin Nunes

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 20:02 (two years ago)

xp - I think that would be normal advice from any defense lawyer.

“large, complex, detailed, but irrefutable” report

irl lol. Do none of his lawyers already have this information? He's going to drop his huge top secret bombshell at a press conference and charges will be dropped?

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 20:11 (two years ago)

How many exclamation points in this report?

hardcore technician gimmicks are also another popular choice f (President Keyes), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 20:20 (two years ago)

One could legitimately argue that releasing this 'bombshell' of a report is a furtherance of the very conspiracy he's just been indicted for - this time trying to sway potential jurors

Down in a hole, yet he keeps digging

I am not a lawyer, but I imagine it's rare for many people to plead guilty right off the bat.

Far and away, the usual course is to take a deal to plead to a lesser offense.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 20:34 (two years ago)

according to paperwork signed on camera.

erm, in camera innit?

― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, August 14, 2023 6:43 PM

"In camera" means out of the view of the press and public. So this is a rare case when "on camera" is correct.

Anyway, yay indictments

felicity, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 20:45 (two years ago)

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 22:58 (two years ago)

(at the risk of coming off like a dick)
"camera" just means "room" - the original "camera obscura" was a dark room with a pinhole which allowed the image of a scene to be thrown on a canvas hung on the opposite wall upside down, so the proportions and perspective could be traced directly; then they used a lens to improve the pinhole image, then some clever chemist figured how to use a photosensitive plate instead of a canvas, and then they became portable cameras.
(oh no the risk was too great)
