The Monro in Duke Street. The owner of the Brooklyn place, also called Monro, is a scouser who met his American wife at the Liverpool Monro.

Ah, right. I've been past the original Munro many times, but never been in. I see the Park Slope place is an LFC haunt. What a shame ;)

Michael Jones, Saturday, 12 August 2023 21:38 (two years ago)

Yeah the place is packed with red jerseyed people on game days. I annoy that crowd by vocally supporting West Ham United

Josefa, Saturday, 12 August 2023 22:01 (two years ago)

I’n standing over my seat enjoying my whatever when the bartender asks if she can give my seat to her friend, who has just walked in. Sure. But then they don’t talk at all

calstars, Sunday, 13 August 2023 00:28 (two years ago)

You obviously moved to a bad neighborhood

Josefa, Sunday, 13 August 2023 00:32 (two years ago)

well, yeah

calstars, Sunday, 13 August 2023 00:38 (two years ago)

yeah, a gin gimlet with Bluecoat cost me $10 last night, but this is Philadelphia prices.

Bartender finally engaging with her friend an hour later

calstars, Sunday, 13 August 2023 01:36 (two years ago)

bar near here has gin and tonic flights at 3 for $25 and each has a fancy garnish

I did not have a flight but a pepper-forward single one had peppercorns and a nice slice of orange

mh, Sunday, 13 August 2023 02:44 (two years ago)

Bar paid for two of my four and I had a chance to say hi to my crush, not a bad evening

calstars, Saturday, 19 August 2023 01:23 (two years ago)

hell yeah summertime crushin

ian, Saturday, 19 August 2023 01:33 (two years ago)

there's very few bars i enjoy going to these days. it's somehow defaulted to [the vaguely rock & roll bar] where the record collectors and musicians i know work now, since the closing of several other bars over the last decade has left few places for the elder hipsters to serve booze.

Had two brandy old fashioned sours tonight at the bar of the finest supper club in the county, felt like a proper WI evening.

Favourite bar with jukebox shut down, do i still go out tonight? would have to dodge and slip around all the manchester footy nobs, but off work for a week so feel i am obliged to have some fun.

Ste, Saturday, 19 August 2023 16:37 (two years ago)

Good time to scope out alternate spots imho

calstars, Saturday, 19 August 2023 17:58 (two years ago)

I'm posting up at this joint with my favorite bartender on earth; he lets me nurse a gin and tonic for an hour. I'm killing time before watching Passages around the corner.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 August 2023 18:11 (two years ago)

How much did you pay for it?

Josefa, Saturday, 19 August 2023 18:15 (two years ago)

$14. Hendrick's.

At the dive bar I hit on Thursday's it's $7 or *

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 August 2023 20:57 (two years ago)

She left the bar and walked up and down the street a couple of times, then came back in. Had a drink, left again, went to the curb to spit in the street. Had a cigarette, laughed to herself, came back in.

calstars, Saturday, 19 August 2023 23:22 (two years ago)

which Dubliners story are you quoting?

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 August 2023 23:26 (two years ago)

This afternoon's office is a friendly dive in the Little Five Points area of Atlanta. Dark wood, relatively cheap beer, crowd of regulars watching the Braves game. I'm doing a few hours work while my wife has a business meeting. They have two boozy slushies, the machines labeled in magic marker on masking tape. I assume they rotate them. Today it's Pink Lemonade and Peach Margarita, but I just went with a beer from a local brewery.

calstars, Sunday, 20 August 2023 20:18 (two years ago)

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 20 August 2023 21:25 (two years ago)

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 21 August 2023 13:32 (two years ago)

tfw it’s happy hour and the bartender charges you $2 more than the price on the menu

calstars, Monday, 21 August 2023 22:37 (two years ago)

tabes how many bottles of tequila do you estimate got put down

earosmith (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 August 2023 23:27 (two years ago)

went to a little small town bar yesterday in Niles California... looked promising, it was called Joe's Corner

3 pint of beer was $27.75!! talk about UNhappy hour

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 21 August 2023 23:44 (two years ago)

unsustainable
Next time go for bottles and enjoy a 30% discount on your bill

calstars, Monday, 21 August 2023 23:46 (two years ago)

The “.75” in your total leads me to think you paid with a credit card. At small bars, cash is king

calstars, Monday, 21 August 2023 23:55 (two years ago)

You'd think so.. but this place had a sign saying they preferred credit cards, and if you pay by cash, NO COINS ALLOWED

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 00:03 (two years ago)

they had the little rotating iPad things, my heart sinks when I see those

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 00:04 (two years ago)

Here in WI if you pay with a card, a 3-ish% surcharge is often added. That is, if they accept cards at all.

“Where have I been all your life?”

calstars, Friday, 25 August 2023 00:37 (two years ago)

At one of my regulars, I get the feeling the staff see me as a narc of sorts, like I’m checking what everyone is doing on behalf of the owner or whatever. The place has an excessive amount of employees who all buzz around trying to keep busy

calstars, Saturday, 26 August 2023 00:49 (two years ago)

That’s part of the job, I would not take it personally

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:02 (two years ago)

Thanks. Yeah I don’t. It’s just a contrast to most other places which are more laissez faire

calstars, Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:10 (two years ago)

Just got a $1 lifetime membership at the local bowls club at the end of my street (1 minute). Never been a bar person, but the basically half price (compared to your fancy bars) schooners are tempting me to hang out with the geriatrics….. Could be fun?

H.P, Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:14 (two years ago)

What is a “bowls club”

calstars, Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:16 (two years ago)

Four big lawn bowls squares branching out with a bar in the middle of it all. Entertainment includes: old rockers playing credence covers, pokie machines, meat raffle giveaways, trivia, cheap lunch meals, very cheep beers. It’s an Aussie institution.

H.P, Saturday, 26 August 2023 01:26 (two years ago)

Colloquially known as the “bowlo”, a bit of a dying tradition in Australia.
