oh that's so nice, thanks! fwiw i usually post most of my paintings on instagram (@zach_tbd)these days. sometimes i wonder whether it makes sense to post them here anymore (the redundancy of posting the same images in multiple online places, not wanting to exhaust anyone who has to see it more than once), but i feel an attachment to the thread for many sentimental reasons. i've gotten so much encouragement over the years on this thread and it's helped to get me through some hard times etc <3

it's hard to get the colors of oil with gouache, at least for me, but it was more fun to have a bunch of time to think about his composition and stuff like outlining

ah, thanks but that was a self-loathing comment of mine, wish i hadn't said that! just the other day i was complaining about a friend of mine who always announces he's anything he's involved in with such an array of self-loathing apologies that by the time he's done it feels more like a charity of event in honor of the friend who feels bad for making it not good enough...etc etc. so much better to not bring that element in, but yet i do it all the time! (working on it though)

thought i was done but ended up working on it a bit longer. as i was finishing up, a chess timer i ordered in the mail arrived. i'm going to start clocking in when i'm actually holding my brush and standing and painting, and working, and turning it off when i wander off or make tea or just stare distantly like a mule.

haha, yeah definitely! i need to start using it for other activities too -- it's amazing how often things, for me at least, come down to just focusing and paying attention, or not. distraction is the mindkiller, and yet, *wanders off*

fingers crossed but i might be selling that last painting (last 3 sales have fallen through so i'm just jinxing myself again)

all ten of my fingers are crossed now, though, so 5 different crossings of 2. i've finally woken up from my yearslong slumber and started applying to things for the first time - a couple contests/juried exhibitions, a gallery, and an upcoming residency. plus, i managed to go out and see an opening at a "real" gallery on friday, to see a local artist i really like that's managed to make a living out of it. i introduced myself and he offered me (fingers crossed) a spot in an exhibition at his space in a couple months!

what's hilarious is that all of this is hitting right as my savings hits $0, like, exactly after working my ass off and going through my life savings trying to become better for the last 2+ years. i know i need to get a source of steady income, even if it's just taking tickets at the art center, but i'm also filled up to the brim with music and art activities and obligations right now, in the very best way. never really understood wanting there to be more hours in a day, until very recently

anyway, that might be oversharing, sorry, but i figure anyone still reading this thread might be interested in hearing about some irl progress. i also made made this timelapse (not really a timelapse - more just taking a quick pic after significant changes) of the last painting. i had to make it tiny and reduce the quality to get it down to a reasonable filesize, shades of 2009 internet

4th and final post in a row, sorry, but what's hilarious is that it took me about a week straight of painting to finally realize that the hand on the left was ENORMOUS, like way the fuck too big. i didn't use a model or a pictorial reference (although it very much resembles reagan on the front of perlstein's Invisible Bridge hardcover), and apparently my idea of a hand is just to make them cartoonishly large. i finally realized, on the second to last day of painting, that making it a normal size would improve things. kinda miss that giant hand though :D

strangely, music is taking up a lot more time too! there's hardly time to paint because of music practices, and then...i'm out of money. so i'm in the middle of a job application right now. in the end, i was able to go almost 2.5 years without working a job, completely obliterating my savings. After rent on the first i am down to about $200 in my bank account! but I have boxes of records to sell, a part-time job taking tickets coming in January, and I've had some luck in selling some recent paintings and still have a kindling of hope that I can make it that way some day. i had money, i have zero money, i have zero regrets, i would do it again in the exact same way if it led me here
