lol oops sorry for posting that on the wrong thread — I should've remembered the LIRR discussion goes on the Trump thread, not the Twitter thread

fwiw this is what I posted to our readers about taking down our corporate account:
A small note: If any of you followed us on what used to be Twitter, you might notice that our account is no longer there. We decided to delete it because of the ongoing degradation of Twitter/X as a useful space for the exchange of information. Its current owner has made clear that he is actively hostile to the practice of journalism and has personally harassed several news organizations that use the platform. Moreover, he has shown a brazen disregard for the privacy and security of information exchanged on the platform. To put it plainly, we don't trust the platform and do not wish to have a formal presence there.
Because many of the people and organizations we cover do still have a presence, we will continue to monitor activity on X via other accounts. So don't think that if you post something we won't see it. :)

Well, it's been 35 days or so since Twitter said that Tweetdeck would be available to verified users only in 30 days, and it still works fine for unchecked me, so that's good I guess.

given his approach to the physical X sign i'm surprised he didn't login to twitter's DNS manager himself and just start changing A NAME records, why not

Siloing it to a phone app only was a bizarre choice. People like to waste time on these things while they're working, and not have to open up their phone to do it.This doesn't seem that bizarre to me. A study from 2016 found that about 80% of all time spent on social media in the U.S. is on mobile rather than desktop. I wouldn't be surprised if a) that's now higher because of TikTok, b) the global rate is also higher given the dominance of mobile in developing countries. Not everyone has a desk job, obv.― jaymc, Wednesday, August 2, 2023 9:32 AM (six days ago) bookmarkflaglink

twitter is a small share of social media tho, and much nerdier than the rest of social media. i reckon desktop share is much higher
honestly it doesn't seem like meta tried that hard to make threads a thing? i use ig (but not threads) and haven't been reminded of it once

xps just aces all around:
The opinion describes the Justice Department’s “difficulties” in initially making contact with Twitter — which had only recently been taken over by Musk — to serve the search warrant. Prosecutors first attempted to contact the company on Jan. 17 via its website for legal requests but found the page to be inoperative. On Jan. 19, the company finally connected with prosecutors but did not immediately comply with the warrant. On Jan. 25, when prosecutors prodded Twitter again, the company’s counsel claimed she “had not heard anything about the warrant.”Finally, on Feb. 1, four days after the production deadline, Twitter raised a legal objection to the nondisclosure order.“Although the company did not question the validity of the search warrant, it asserted that the nondisclosure order was facially invalid under the First Amendment,” Pan noted. “Twitter informed the government that it would not comply with the warrant until the district court assessed the legality of the nondisclosure order.”

nondisclosure orders are an everyday part of criminal subpoenas. no court this side of Aileen Cannon is going to throw one out on a specious first amendment claim.

Freddy's is real and not bad as far as cheap burgers, hot dogs, and frozen custard goes. There are a couple near me, although I haven't set foot in one in about a decade.

It was but I didn't linger at the display long enough to remember it or to understand how and why Dick was the one who got to put his name on it. Beyond the obvious fact that he's a Dick.

its really funny to me that on every single web page or app a single "X" denotes "click here to close" whereas on Twitter it now directs you to the home page
― frogbs, Monday, 14 August 2023 02:54 (two years ago)
like I was on it and couldn't figure out where the home button was because 20 years of internet usage has conditioned me to look past the big X
― frogbs, Monday, 14 August 2023 02:56 (two years ago)
same esp since I use dark mode on everything, my eyes just breeze past the white-x-on-black-icon on my bookmarks bar
it's good though, it means I'm not always clicking on it

Apart from all the other dumb reasons to rebrand Twitter as X, I feel like it's frayed whatever lingering attachment I have to the app. Twitter was a place where I used to have fun, who knows what the fuck X is.

I accidentally retweeted something the other day and found I couldn’t undo retweet. Don’t know if it’s just an issue with my phone app but I can’t be bothered to log in on desktop to check - either way, it’s just one more thing that no longer works on this stupid site
― Roz, Friday, 18 August 2023 17:11 (two years ago)
i open threads multiple times a day and can't say it's a very engaging experience, but I should maybe hunt down more people to follow. problem is I liked a lot of the people I followed on Twitter and it doesn't seem that most of them have migrated elsewhere.

Elon Musk has said large block lists have been a resource drain for Twitter, because they – for some reason – significantly increase their server costs. Elon has asked that you don’t block people in an effort to save Twitter expenses. If you block lots of ppl, it costs Musk $$$— LeGate (@williamlegate) March 9, 2023

I'm still kinda using fka twitter out of habit, because I'm generally not seeing a lot of garbage (I really only follow musicians), and because at least a few of the regular posters that I follow are still using it. Kinda wish I could fully quit it out of principle but it's not totally unusable for me yet.
No interest in Threads, bluesky seems fine in concept but right now there's basically nothing of interest there.
