i think there's a middle ground between "he's deliberately trying to destroy it" and "he genuinely thinks these are good ideas, i.e. he is stupid". it's not that he's trying to destroy it. it's that he's trying to erase the original twitter as a cultural force while also buying a ~media property for the usual reasons rich people buy media properties.

Matt Binder’s read on it is that Elon’s motives change, where some points he wants to destroy it just as a laugh, other days he wants to make it work and become his stupid dream platform.

i think he just thinks all his thoughts are good and will work so if he hates twitter and wants to destroy it thats good and will work, as will prioritizing blue checks in replies and so forth

It's kind of amazing how pervasive Twitter is as a brand, and how stupid it is to abandon that. It would be like Kleenex changing its name. Like, everything from major companies and the government to local businesses use and associate with Twitter. Is, like, the TSA, or McDonald's or the flower shop down the street really expected to change all their internet and social media presence to reflect Musk's silliness? I just don't see it, and assume many or even most are either ignoring it or oblivious.

My wife, who is in advertising and marketing, thinks this name change is magnitudes stupider than HBO going Max.

I wonder if he thinks that changing the name of the company means that the contracts with landlords and vendors are no longer valid. Tbf, this is something that has worked in other industries to hold up payouts or evade creditors, so….

so X/Twitter just reinstated Kanye and is starting to ban ads that attack Republicans, seems like a bad sign for the brand that even *I* didn't know about this until a couple days after the fact

I think it’s time reputable news, journalists, writers, and politicians delete their profiles. They aren’t all on Truth Social. Most of them are now on threads anyway and the savvy ones are on mastodon. Blue sky should probably open up too.

So, dumb question, but is the whole “clueless billionaire’s vanity project” aspect of the Twitter takeover just a front for Elon’s backers buying influence over our political discourse and/or attempting to destroy an avenue of free speech which was increasingly seen as a threat?

I do think there may be an ulterior motive for the name change. I believe his legal team is gonna try some shit. but really if you follow this guy at all you'd know these are just the kinds of ideas he has. he never says anything smart
