I understand Foley's critiques of the article, what I don't understand is why it's weird to see a "blue tick" issue them. (Fwiw, Foley was verified before Elon came along.)

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 23:45 (two years ago)

Weird because 99.99% of blue ticks are insane climate deniers who wouldn't know a fact from a cat turd, is what I think xyzzzz is getting at.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 23:54 (two years ago)

yeah that's the nu-blu-tick and not OG-tick though, which she is, I guess. I dunno because again I deleted my profile and hate X. why am I even reading this thread still?

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 27 July 2023 01:08 (two years ago)

Man, calling it "X" and that logo are like the most basic bullshit I've ever seen. It looks like a first year college graphic design/marketing project.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:17 (two years ago)

best case scenario was that people slowly forgot Elon owned the site and continued posting, this ain't exactly helping the cause

frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:36 (two years ago)

like seriously everyone knows what a Tweet is in fact like half the value of that company is how it just entered the common vernacular. you could say "did you see what LeBron James tweeted", because "tweeted" is an accepted verb. no normal person is gonna say "did you see what LeBron posted on X", in fact you can't even really refer to the app at all now without sounding like a dipshit. oh and you took one of the most recognized app logos and replaced it with something that looks like a link to a porno site. this is like Nathan For You level shit.

frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:29 (two years ago)

It'd be akin to changing "photoshop" to "picblaster3000" and insisting everyone start calling them "blasties".

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:34 (two years ago)

mods pls hatdump all future references to tweets into BLASTIES!

What James said. My understanding is that you have to pay to keep your blue tick. Many people verified before have lost their blue tick.

Not 2025, studies suggest 2050

He also says it’s also not the Gulf-stream that may collapse, but something called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The thread goes into details.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 27 July 2023 08:52 (two years ago)

Without twitter we might have Blue Sky or Mastodon but there aren't enough posters.

These couple of posts by Tracey Thorn made me think that the bad Guardian Obit might have been one of the few sources of 'tribute'.

I think what's so hateful about that Guardian Sinead obit is the way it frames her whole life in negatives - "she lacked the obsessive drive needed…never had another hit…inability to edit her pronouncements...constitutionally unable to compromise…" Talk about removing agency😡

if they don't use the name 'twitter' for a certain amount of time, do they lose the copyright?

Amazing design - where I would normally click the top right of the embedded tweet to view on Twitter it’s now a black X that looks like I’m closing down the embed

i think there's a middle ground between "he's deliberately trying to destroy it" and "he genuinely thinks these are good ideas, i.e. he is stupid". it's not that he's trying to destroy it. it's that he's trying to erase the original twitter as a cultural force while also buying a ~media property for the usual reasons rich people buy media properties.

I just haven't updated it yet.

pplains, Saturday, 29 July 2023 13:19 (two years ago)

Matt Binder’s read on it is that Elon’s motives change, where some points he wants to destroy it just as a laugh, other days he wants to make it work and become his stupid dream platform.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Saturday, 29 July 2023 13:51 (two years ago)

i think he just thinks all his thoughts are good and will work so if he hates twitter and wants to destroy it thats good and will work, as will prioritizing blue checks in replies and so forth

It's kind of amazing how pervasive Twitter is as a brand, and how stupid it is to abandon that. It would be like Kleenex changing its name. Like, everything from major companies and the government to local businesses use and associate with Twitter. Is, like, the TSA, or McDonald's or the flower shop down the street really expected to change all their internet and social media presence to reflect Musk's silliness? I just don't see it, and assume many or even most are either ignoring it or oblivious.

The alternate definition of the verb, ‘tweet’, as in, ‘to make a posting on the Twitter online message service’, is in the actual dictionary. No other social media app has anything like it. Imagine disposing of that level of brand recognition because of a mid-life crisis. https://t.co/5gcs3dOLR8

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 29 July 2023 15:45 (two years ago)

So amazing how Elon doesn’t understand humor. I can’t even tell what the joke is here.

Moritz von Oswald von Wolkenstein (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 29 July 2023 15:56 (two years ago)

I wonder if he thinks that changing the name of the company means that the contracts with landlords and vendors are no longer valid. Tbf, this is something that has worked in other industries to hold up payouts or evade creditors, so….
