I understand Foley's critiques of the article, what I don't understand is why it's weird to see a "blue tick" issue them. (Fwiw, Foley was verified before Elon came along.)

Man, calling it "X" and that logo are like the most basic bullshit I've ever seen. It looks like a first year college graphic design/marketing project.

best case scenario was that people slowly forgot Elon owned the site and continued posting, this ain't exactly helping the cause

like seriously everyone knows what a Tweet is in fact like half the value of that company is how it just entered the common vernacular. you could say "did you see what LeBron James tweeted", because "tweeted" is an accepted verb. no normal person is gonna say "did you see what LeBron posted on X", in fact you can't even really refer to the app at all now without sounding like a dipshit. oh and you took one of the most recognized app logos and replaced it with something that looks like a link to a porno site. this is like Nathan For You level shit.

It'd be akin to changing "photoshop" to "picblaster3000" and insisting everyone start calling them "blasties".

oh and you can also use it to order groceries online

What James said. My understanding is that you have to pay to keep your blue tick. Many people verified before have lost their blue tick.

i think there's a middle ground between "he's deliberately trying to destroy it" and "he genuinely thinks these are good ideas, i.e. he is stupid". it's not that he's trying to destroy it. it's that he's trying to erase the original twitter as a cultural force while also buying a ~media property for the usual reasons rich people buy media properties.

Matt Binder’s read on it is that Elon’s motives change, where some points he wants to destroy it just as a laugh, other days he wants to make it work and become his stupid dream platform.

i think he just thinks all his thoughts are good and will work so if he hates twitter and wants to destroy it thats good and will work, as will prioritizing blue checks in replies and so forth

It's kind of amazing how pervasive Twitter is as a brand, and how stupid it is to abandon that. It would be like Kleenex changing its name. Like, everything from major companies and the government to local businesses use and associate with Twitter. Is, like, the TSA, or McDonald's or the flower shop down the street really expected to change all their internet and social media presence to reflect Musk's silliness? I just don't see it, and assume many or even most are either ignoring it or oblivious.
