It is patently clear that Musk is incompetent. He has also become socialized in the right wing echo chamber where they are still desperately clinging to the notion that the public actually has a silent majority of fervent Nazi sympathizers, they just need a coherent outlet for a new 21st century tech-friendly fascism. He probably does legitimately believe there’s a solid customer base for this nonsense — and frankly the way Reddit has captured so much of random online culture as it is literally taken over by the alt-right indicates there may be something to that. However it’s also possible that some of these notions are being fed to Musk by more clear-thinking members of the 88 club, or yes even by those with some actual experience at destroying open and democratic media. It really does seem like a concerted effort to take down good faith public discourse, whether that’s wisdom Musk accidentally received from the detritus of decades of attacks on the ‘liberal media’, or whether it’s more directly targeted, is a conundrum. I will say Musk like Trump seems to me an almost ideal mark for psychological manipulation, if some agents of anti-democratic interests were so inclined.

I agree with a lot in this post, but I truly want the idea that social media sites are "a town square" or a place for "public discourse" to die. These companies, all of them, are privately owned, operated for profit, and virtual, and aren't designed to serve the public, but the coffers of large corporations. I'm tired of this small rhetorical flourish continuing unabated as conventional wisdom when it is demonstrably false.

Twitter is a town square where only 10% of the town actually shows up, and even then, half of *that* is just snake oil salesmen and the rubes the frequent them

lol yeah it's easy to overromanticize actual town squares. In ours, you typically get one guy playing musical saw reasonably well, one guy playing Middle Eastern fiddle not so well, random preachers condemning people for letting their daughters out of the house wearing shorts, assorted panhandlers, the steel drum guy, and farmers' markets twice a week. It is not a place of high-minded discourse, except for the occasional political march or rally.

deleted my 2 accounts. first full day without twitter in a while (I had an account for many years but only started really actively using it around 2018). does this mean I have to go to primary sources for my news now and not get it delivered to me by angry 12 year olds?

“I don’t like being harassed at my private home. I’ve been doxed so many times by the left and right, I have a constant flow of people pulling over, taking pictures, even leaving death threats in my mailbox,” Buchanan wrote.

Ok what
Eventually he fronted a rock band with an extremely silly, fruit-themed name, which gigged at establishments like Bullwinkle’s Saloon in Tallahassee and Bubba’s Pizza in Panama City Beach, and was reportedly on the radar of the Dust Brothers, producers who worked on Beck’s Odelay.
Surprised(?) RS would publish this without confirming with the source!

It's common to have "shita" in a Japanese name, so naturally people use it for their account name. Apparently "X" didn't take that in account when they decided to mass suspend users that has "shit" in their account name and so many Japan users are getting suspended. pic.twitter.com/oXtJRQcNoh— ハイガイ / AJ (@highgai) July 25, 2023

― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:17 (two years ago)
best case scenario was that people slowly forgot Elon owned the site and continued posting, this ain't exactly helping the cause
― frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:36 (two years ago)
like seriously everyone knows what a Tweet is in fact like half the value of that company is how it just entered the common vernacular. you could say "did you see what LeBron James tweeted", because "tweeted" is an accepted verb. no normal person is gonna say "did you see what LeBron posted on X", in fact you can't even really refer to the app at all now without sounding like a dipshit. oh and you took one of the most recognized app logos and replaced it with something that looks like a link to a porno site. this is like Nathan For You level shit.
― frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:29 (two years ago)
It'd be akin to changing "photoshop" to "picblaster3000" and insisting everyone start calling them "blasties".

Without twitter we might have Blue Sky or Mastodon but there aren't enough posters.
These couple of posts by Tracey Thorn made me think that the bad Guardian Obit might have been one of the few sources of 'tribute'.
I think what's so hateful about that Guardian Sinead obit is the way it frames her whole life in negatives - "she lacked the obsessive drive needed…never had another hit…inability to edit her pronouncements...constitutionally unable to compromise…" Talk about removing agency😡— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) July 27, 2023
