the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

I'm not even sure how my ilxmail works. Is that just the address I used to originally sign up/register? My login ID? How do I change that without re-registering?

No, that didn't do it. When I send an email (to myself) through that portal, by clicking on my screen name, it just sends to my original login ID, which is an old email address. But when I try to change that old login address to a new login address, my current email, it logs me out, because it no longer matches the one associated with the password. Hmm.

Haha, funny posts. To be fair to them though, it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of infrastructure for a site like Twitter/Bluesky to run – as it is whenever there is a flood of new people the site starts to stop loading posts etc.

Yeah, it is notably sluggish at the best of times.

Lotta placeholder accounts there right now with virtually no activity (including Tracer's, lol). I often can't tell if they are squatters trying to steal/scam the handle or legit mirrors of their twitter accounts.

The problem with social media as a whole is that it's so ego-driven that posters view just about every topic through a solipsistic lens. BlueSky isn't as bad as X in that regard but there's still plenty of it there.

That and everyone wants their take canonized and disagreement is viewed as hostile. At least with BlueSky the US-centric idiocy usually comes less from a "rah rah USA" POV than people just lacking self-awareness, but it's definitely there in full force because even the best-intentioned Yanks often forget their privilege

I think Europeans and British people are as wary about switching on/getting a/c as they are about when to turn on the central heating in the autumn. It’s crossing a line, somehow. The weather here is not in extremis apart from days that only add up to a few weeks of issues per year that could be floods, heat, snow, hosepipe ban.

lol yes. americans are deeply fascinated by this, which if you've ever talked to anyone from a place where they don't do the weird white-people super narrow breakfast thing is p funny. when I was taking French classes in Montreal we did a day where we talked about what we eat for breakfast and the Chinese and Iranians were absolutely stupefied by our breakfast choices

AC resistance is pretty common in north america IME. I lived in Georgia long enough to love AC and embrace it (allergies also a factor), but when I moved to Chicago in 2001 I met some "we don't need AC here" people, again in Oregon, and again in Montreal. I assume all these people have since seen the light

lot of people think they can take nyc without a/c their first summer next year theyre headed down to pc richard and sons the first hot day

People also tend to not realize climate differences as well. Just about every time a soccer (football) match goes through a weather delay in the US, UK posters often show up and say "omg u Yanks are soft, delaying for a little rain", and its like, no, actually, it's the lightning and the occasional spawned tornado that cause the delay.

Thunderstorms in the US in summer ain't no joke, 50-60 mph winds, mad lightning - one regular-assed storm tore the roof off our 7/11 in 2024

can't say I agree with this. there is def an undercurrent of rah rah, and generally there's an obvious and pathetic need among some americans to have contempt for the UK/Europe, like as much as the US sucks ass at least we can get mexican food (lol) and don't eat baked beans for breakfast or w/e. I'm hypersensitive to this due to the circumstances of my birth & upbringing but it's real

I have an egg intolerance so beans on toast just seems like a reasonable and cheap way to get protein to me. if you don't like the taste of the sauce, that's fine and normal, but pretending like it's the world's grossest idea is odd. again, try telling someone from east asia why you eat oatmeal in the morning like a damn horse and they're like "why not eat good and normal food all three meals, do you hate yourself?"

tbf though people really are just out of their minds everywhere. I met an american the other day here and they were complaining about how there's no wind in Montreal, idk people project weird weird stuff onto geography
