linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Friday, 14 July 2023 21:36 (two years ago)

seems like the owners/employees have basically been bullied off their own platform. apart from one SWE they've completely stopped posting. truly outstanding effort from the userbase.

'scuse me, while I diss bluesky.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 14 July 2023 21:39 (two years ago)

Not a screenshot but: the post is from a bsky team technical advisor that says “Some of that Blue.” with a photo of a blue sky with which is just not remotely helpful.

To you, no. If you consider that some people reading might be colour-blind, though...

I almost went back to LiveJournal after seeing my posts from the 2000s and missing writing in paraphernalia, and then I found it was owned by Russians and…subject to Russian law.

(Also am in Bluesky and it feels like me and Albini and Parton Oswalt hanging out in a Delta Skylounge.)

I'm on there now as chants.bsky.social. Haven't found very many people to follow on there, idk.

"I joined ello but lord only knows when I was last on it or if the account still exists"

the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

if anybody needs one just DM me on slack or twitter, I've got 5

, Thursday, 3 August 2023 14:42 (two years ago)

will do ASAP, I'm stuck somewhere else right now. are you easy to find on Twitter?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

yeah I'm @smashedmcdouble

or I can just ilxmail you if yours works josh

, Thursday, 3 August 2023 15:07 (two years ago)

that would be great, thanks! I am pretty sure my Gmail address is in my profile.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 15:37 (two years ago)

So jklein04 AT gmail.com. Thanks again! (Looks like I couldn't DM you on twitter if I wanted to without twitter blue)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

I just used the ilxmail interface

, Thursday, 3 August 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

Got it, thanks! Will start porting over twitter peeps and whatnot later today. Now I need to figure out how to change my ilxmail, lol.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 17:42 (two years ago)

yeah i don't want to post mine here because you're nominally repsonsible for who you invite and people get banned if their invites misbehave but i have a few. ilxmail me if you need one.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 3 August 2023 17:53 (two years ago)

I'm not even sure how my ilxmail works. Is that just the address I used to originally sign up/register? My login ID? How do I change that without re-registering?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 21:22 (two years ago)

https://ilxor.com/ILX/Pages/editprofile.jsp ?

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 3 August 2023 21:42 (two years ago)

No, that didn't do it. When I send an email (to myself) through that portal, by clicking on my screen name, it just sends to my original login ID, which is an old email address. But when I try to change that old login address to a new login address, my current email, it logs me out, because it no longer matches the one associated with the password. Hmm.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 August 2023 21:48 (two years ago)

who do we follow on bluesky?

corrs unplugged, Friday, 4 August 2023 07:23 (two years ago)

everybody cool follows tracerhand iirc

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 August 2023 00:30 (two years ago)

thats right

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 August 2023 01:08 (two years ago)

I'm not nominally responsible enough to give a fuck about this platform or any of the people on it, anything online where you need invites to access it is for wankers, apart from private torrent sites - I don't make the rules.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 5 August 2023 01:44 (two years ago)

I'd never lower myself to ask for a fucking invite code and then get precious about who you are going to give them to. Ohh can't have any riff raff here. It's a site for snobby supercilious wankers - lol, even worse than this one!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 5 August 2023 01:51 (two years ago)

aww

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 August 2023 02:15 (two years ago)

Haha, funny posts. To be fair to them though, it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of infrastructure for a site like Twitter/Bluesky to run – as it is whenever there is a flood of new people the site starts to stop loading posts etc.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 5 August 2023 08:22 (two years ago)

Yeah, it is notably sluggish at the best of times.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Saturday, 5 August 2023 12:13 (two years ago)

Lotta placeholder accounts there right now with virtually no activity (including Tracer's, lol). I often can't tell if they are squatters trying to steal/scam the handle or legit mirrors of their twitter accounts.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 5 August 2023 14:43 (two years ago)

I don't know anything about this app other than I agree it is pronounced like brewski

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 August 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

tbf everyone does that to each other europeans telling americans to pass gun reform or whatever its just talking the people who can do something wont listen lol, having said that i agree its annoying particularly when people dont really understand the political/cultural dynamics at play, i do wish for my european comrades to quickly achieve air conditioning tho so the elderly and infirm do not parish from heat stroke and so that everyone can stay cool if they so wish

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 14:55 (forty-four minutes ago)

if I ever go "why don't you just pass gun reforms?" then I would deserve all I got

Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 27 June 2026 14:58 (forty-one minutes ago)

obvs thats the most obnoxious approach but theres also like your country is so fucked up it wont pass gun reform which tbf is true but then when they try to describe how its fucked up its usually a crude simplistic understanding which kind of grates, having said that almost no american can manage even a crude simplistic understanding of another countrys politics so i guess its better than nothing lol

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:02 (thirty-seven minutes ago)

i mean i would really like people to take an active interest in understanding the political systems and cultures of other countries, that would be wonderful. barring that, though, the next best alternative is just to sympathise/shut up and yeah "sorry your country is fucked" seems like a pretty safe bet. venturing opinions when you don't understand is the worst option available.

Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:06 (thirty-three minutes ago)

i havent dug into the great bluesky ac debate it seems to have mostly missed my timeline thank god but im guessing that a lot of americans assumed that europeans are personally against a/c, which idk could be true, but anyway perfect opportunity to ask someone from there what the deal is

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:11 (twenty-eight minutes ago)

the problem is the someones try to tell them and americans start ranting about baked beans

rob, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:18 (twenty-one minutes ago)

i encounter more AC in Europe (well, London and Paris) than I do on the west coast.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:19 (twenty minutes ago)

are we talking about beans on toast lol xp

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:20 (nineteen minutes ago)

the worst thing is that the person starting it was a v good journalist we all (afaik) like and respect, and his attitude to starting a bad discourse seems to be "lol u mad bro"

Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:22 (seventeen minutes ago)

yeah when I lived in Oregon, the lack of AC was becoming an obvious problem due to newly super hot summers & constant wildfire smoke

rob, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:22 (seventeen minutes ago)

there used to be basically no residential a/c in vermont but now everyone has it because of the global warming

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:23 (fifteen minutes ago)

The problem with social media as a whole is that it's so ego-driven that posters view just about every topic through a solipsistic lens. BlueSky isn't as bad as X in that regard but there's still plenty of it there.

That and everyone wants their take canonized and disagreement is viewed as hostile. At least with BlueSky the US-centric idiocy usually comes less from a "rah rah USA" POV than people just lacking self-awareness, but it's definitely there in full force because even the best-intentioned Yanks often forget their privilege

If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:25 (thirteen minutes ago)

I think Europeans and British people are as wary about switching on/getting a/c as they are about when to turn on the central heating in the autumn. It’s crossing a line, somehow. The weather here is not in extremis apart from days that only add up to a few weeks of issues per year that could be floods, heat, snow, hosepipe ban.

einstürzende louboutin (suzy), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:25 (thirteen minutes ago)

are we talking about beans on toast lol xp

― lag∞n, Saturday, June 27, 2026 11:20 AM (one minute ago)

lol yes. americans are deeply fascinated by this, which if you've ever talked to anyone from a place where they don't do the weird white-people super narrow breakfast thing is p funny. when I was taking French classes in Montreal we did a day where we talked about what we eat for breakfast and the Chinese and Iranians were absolutely stupefied by our breakfast choices

AC resistance is pretty common in north america IME. I lived in Georgia long enough to love AC and embrace it (allergies also a factor), but when I moved to Chicago in 2001 I met some "we don't need AC here" people, again in Oregon, and again in Montreal. I assume all these people have since seen the light

rob, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:28 (eleven minutes ago)

lot of people think they can take nyc without a/c their first summer next year theyre headed down to pc richard and sons the first hot day

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:31 (eight minutes ago)

People also tend to not realize climate differences as well. Just about every time a soccer (football) match goes through a weather delay in the US, UK posters often show up and say "omg u Yanks are soft, delaying for a little rain", and its like, no, actually, it's the lightning and the occasional spawned tornado that cause the delay.

Thunderstorms in the US in summer ain't no joke, 50-60 mph winds, mad lightning - one regular-assed storm tore the roof off our 7/11 in 2024

If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:31 (eight minutes ago)

It was an improvement tbh

If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:32 (seven minutes ago)

what i think distinguishes the US liberals is this underlying core belief in people power and free will which is 20% inspiring but 80% infuriating - many english people have something similar about people "just following the rules" which is worse.

Here is the mentioned donkey, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:32 (seven minutes ago)

― If your ass is a Bible, 213 will regulate (Neanderthal), Saturday, June 27, 2026 11:25 AM (one minute ago)

can't say I agree with this. there is def an undercurrent of rah rah, and generally there's an obvious and pathetic need among some americans to have contempt for the UK/Europe, like as much as the US sucks ass at least we can get mexican food (lol) and don't eat baked beans for breakfast or w/e. I'm hypersensitive to this due to the circumstances of my birth & upbringing but it's real

nyc no ac is wow deluded

rob, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:34 (five minutes ago)

ill eat anything for any meal i mean love american breakfast dont get me wrong but im deep on the adventurous eater end of the spectrum but beans on toast is just kind of a fucked up dish im sorry it just doesnt seem legitimate

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 June 2026 15:35 (four minutes ago)

I have an egg intolerance so beans on toast just seems like a reasonable and cheap way to get protein to me. if you don't like the taste of the sauce, that's fine and normal, but pretending like it's the world's grossest idea is odd. again, try telling someone from east asia why you eat oatmeal in the morning like a damn horse and they're like "why not eat good and normal food all three meals, do you hate yourself?"

tbf though people really are just out of their minds everywhere. I met an american the other day here and they were complaining about how there's no wind in Montreal, idk people project weird weird stuff onto geography
