the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

No, that didn't do it. When I send an email (to myself) through that portal, by clicking on my screen name, it just sends to my original login ID, which is an old email address. But when I try to change that old login address to a new login address, my current email, it logs me out, because it no longer matches the one associated with the password. Hmm.

Haha, funny posts. To be fair to them though, it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of infrastructure for a site like Twitter/Bluesky to run – as it is whenever there is a flood of new people the site starts to stop loading posts etc.

im going to start being against heating thats the new angle

a lot of the circa early 1900s apartment buildings near me have either been converted to condos and have a/c, etc but the big old ones definitely have corner rooms that are basically enclosed porches, windows on both walls that open wide, where you’d sleep during the hot summer months. natural environment for air con to take hold — it already sucked bad in the summer and buildings were making affordances since the beginning. hasn’t gotten any better

We have a load of old buildings and old infrastructure and our government is congenitally unable to invest in infrastructure projects, has been so for my entire lifetime with no sign of this changing in the future, I really hate to be a doomer but there is no use trying to advise people in this country. Some people have definitely deluded themselves into thinking this is all fine, but it's no use arguing with them.

Europe also has pretty high energy costs compared to the US I think?

I'm thinking specifically about the UK though.

do people not use window unit acs over there doesnt require any infrastructure upgrade as long as the nearest outlet can handle the load, guess there could be regulatory/landlord issues too tho

there are specific window configs that make that impossible (also true of both apts I've lived in here fwiw). have heard it's just not necessarily easy to go to the store and get a unit as well. part of the bsky argument about this revolved around the efficacy of floor units, which in my limited experience aren't great (though prob preferable to nothing when it's 90+)

floor units work fine only problem is they need some way to drain which tbf you can do manually its not that bad better than cooking your brain

theyre not as good as window units where you can just put the hot part outside

Many (not all) European countries just haven't needed AC for the most part, this is however no longer the case because of our old friend Climate Change.

I'm looking into them now and the cheapest price I can get for the basic unit like the ones we had in China is £2,539 - and that's for a single room. The "floor units" are something I've never seen in a UK home and all seem to be sold out. If it's needed for a week every few years (as has been the case until recently) then that's just not worth the bother & expense.

DeLonghi Pinguino is a good indoor standalone.

Nearly a thousand quid and all sold out. Maybe next year.

i went to mexico city for the first time in my life last year and was talking to an architect who told me most buildings there don't have ac OR heating! just no need.

friend of mine is from bogota shes telling me because its at the equator and at elevation its basically just 65f every day of the year there are no seasons some months it rains more but its not a real monsoon or anything, sounds nice but also weird idk

theres no heating in kathamadu but it gets cold enough there in the winter that you might like some heat but maybe you dont really need it but still if you get cold it feels like theres no way to get warm

My wife is from Medellin and she says it's kinda like that there, too, plus they have the shelter of being in a mountain valley. Just really nice weather all the time, no extremes.

In our NJ apartment we had two window units that we never took down; we sealed them in there nice and tight with cardboard and duct tape. In fact, we left them there when we moved out for the next people to enjoy. But they were really only good enough to cool off the room they were in, so we also had a "portable" unit which we lugged up from the basement and plugged in during the "hot months" (which by the time we left was from about April to October) to cool the living room. When we ran all three at once, with all interior doors open, during June, July and August, the apartment could get very nice.

In the house we're currently renting, we have central air/heat. But we're at 3000 feet elevation where NJ was 20 feet above sea level, and we're in a valley surrounded by mountains, and the house is tucked away under tall trees, and we live by the shore of a huge lake, and it's been unseasonably cool and rainy (it's in the mid 50s to low 60s lately, and it's been raining a lot), so we've only had to turn the AC on a half dozen times this year.
