Here’s the post:

User handles that are slur words are a form of harassment. We've deployed a change so that these handles can no longer be created in the app.

There’s hundred of posts saying stuff like this:

Okay cool, so what are your next steps? This doesn't even sound like it was written like a human being, responding to other human beings who are reasonably hurt. It sounds like it was written by a machine for people who are worried about not offending the far right vs doing the right thing.

And:

For the record, an apology should contain:

1. A description of what you did wrong.
2. Acknowledgement of why it was wrong.
3. (Optional) an excuse about why you couldn’t have known it was wrong.
4. What you’re doing to make amends.
5. What you’re doing to fix it and avoid future similar mistakes.

There’s also a dozen posts arguing that the Hammer and Sickle is a hate symbol and a dozen posts arguing that the Hammer and Sickle isn’t a hate symbol.

There’s also, as you’d expect, hundreds of fursonas.

lol man fun times for team bluesky

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 14:32 (two years ago)

“While this may not be your vision necessarily, I think a lot of people are less concerned with moving to a new instance of Bluesky, than making sure bigots are not able to have *any* instance on here,” Ben Perry, a Bluesky user also known as tedcruznipples, replied to Graber’s thread.

from this article, which summarizes where some of the current situation originated: https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/08/blueskys-growing-pains-strain-relationship-with-its-black-community-moderation/

"a posting strike"

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:37 (two years ago)

read that as "posing strike"

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:56 (two years ago)

(worthy cause that, tho)

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

What is a posting strike? They posted?

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:58 (two years ago)

i mean, assuming site has not been doing it right idk xp

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 15:59 (two years ago)

It’s good these folks are shining a light on casual bigotry early on but as for a “posting strike” I can pretty much guarantee corporate would like nothing more than to hit mute on this entire debacle. Sorry but I seriously doubt enough users care enough to significantly impact their traffic.

a lot of people are less concerned with moving to a new instance of Bluesky, than making sure bigots are not able to have *any* instance on here…

The Reddit problem in a nutshell (and sorry to keep harping on this but also the fundamental flaw in Mastodon as I understand it).

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 13 July 2023 16:05 (two years ago)

until there is a bluesky thread: some pod person pronounced bluesky as rhymes with brewski yest, is that a thing? is there some meaning in that styling? when it happened, it was so weird i didn't even realize she was talking about for bluesky for a sec.

send me an invite so i can be tendentious and annoying there, too? jk i will be better there somehow.

I mean, if Bluesky is currently 100k users, then it is not the frontrunner alternative to Twitter? (as claimed by the first line of that TechCrunch article)

not so sure post boycotts are gonna work well against a new social media site that as of recently has been trying to limit the number of new signups, including a temporary pause on 7/3.

more direct action would be more effective.

THERE ARE THIEVES ON ILX

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 13 July 2023 16:45 (two years ago)

these are worthy causes and real issues that should be addressed in a "global town square" platform. but this seems to be going down the same path as the fediverse where a majority of "the conversation" ends up being #fediblock bike-shedding instead of like people hanging out with people. i don't think the global town square is something anyone other than advertisers want and we're just drawn to it through various dark-patterns. tbh i think small unfederated-by-default communities of like-minded folks is the only healthy twitter-style social media

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:04 (two years ago)

Ok that is p lol, i feel bad! My ilx linked email should work also, not sure how ilx dm emails are done tho either. Thx again!

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:17 (two years ago)

This ep inspired me to go sorta actually almost surf on my mastodon tho

and it was reasonably fun tbh, first time i’ve been able to say that other times have been a bit too much drag

OTM and I think issues like blackness and queerness are ideal but you’re absolutely right that it is naturally reduced to bike-shedding (especially in an environment where status is so valued). This has, however, been a nice reminder to appreciate spaces like ILX and Messages.app (and the proliferation of “Group Text”).

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

we should be using the global town square to encourage people to take up biking, not to shed them >:(

serving bundt (sic), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:41 (two years ago)

i was for whatever reason thinking of the term bikeshedding then i open this thread and boom there it is haha plate plate of shrimp

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:46 (two years ago)

Plate…or shrimp.

Can someone plz enlighten me about the meaning of bike-shedding?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:49 (two years ago)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_triviality

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:50 (two years ago)

Not enlightening.

Guess bike-shedding is just ostracizing the bigots without actually getting rid of bigoted content?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:51 (two years ago)

bikeshedding is spending time on the inconsequential parts of a problem because theyre easier, eg building a nuclear power plant but mostly worrying what color to paint the bike shed

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:55 (two years ago)

i don't think the global town square is something anyone other than advertisers want

i think this only a minor exaggeration, but not enough people are willing to subject themselves to a true global town square with humility and courage. but enough about me.

i have allowed my love of cycling to nearly destroy me more than once, but had never heard bike-shedding, good to know.

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:57 (two years ago)

think the term is mostly used in computer programming

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 17:58 (two years ago)

xp "...only a minor exaggeration, because not enough people ..."

more clarity-- i don't mean you should always to do it, i don't mean go to town squares who wanna genocide you, obv.

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:00 (two years ago)

Guess bike-shedding is just ostracizing the bigots without actually getting rid of bigoted content?

i was going to have an aside in my original message saying that i don't necessarily think bike-shedding is the most appropriate term but a good shorthand. that's because i DON'T consider these issues and conversations trivial or inconsequential. i think a higher level way to describe what i was going for would be "the meta-conversation about the platform"

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:01 (two years ago)

or "the meta-conversation about the platform at the expense of the conversation the platform is intended to enable"

butch wig (diamonddave85), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:04 (two years ago)

the meta conversation about the platform is a funny constant in online places because the owners of the platform do need users to make good posts thats what makes the platform good, so posters while having no official say do actually have power, the meta conversation posts are not good posts so they function as a threat to the platform encouraging admin to acquiesce

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:08 (two years ago)

my praxis? bad skeets to bring the bosses to their knees

mark s, Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:09 (two years ago)

yeah it's that users vs customers right? "i own this community" "no u don't, we're...the community" "i made this community, you are in my company houses and stores" "byyyyyee"

rick james, critical moralist (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:10 (two years ago)

its the perfect form of collective action you get to 1. make bad posts 2. win

lag∞n, Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:10 (two years ago)

mark s, Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:12 (two years ago)

can you elaborate on this?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:38 (two years ago)

bsky's problem seems to be that the users are leftist shitposters and black twitter refugees, and the owners/mods are TPOT/foocamp libertarian cranks. not a good match.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:39 (two years ago)

jack was apparently following them (under a previous and not-yet-offensive screen name), or so i understood

mark s, Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:42 (two years ago)

Sorry vibecamp. Foocamp is for nerds. Vibecamp is for poly libertarian cranks.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 13 July 2023 18:49 (two years ago)

I thought bike shedding from context was discovering a flaw in your bike and flinging it onto the pavement, never to use it again.

Happy to see on reading what it actually is that I wasn't even close
