― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:01 (three years ago)
one would think theyll open it up eventually but i have no idea what their staffing/funding sitch is like
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:02 (three years ago)
Not being able to open sign-ups at a time when the competition is flailing is the definition of missing the moment. Luckily for them Twitter is sure to keep getting worse.
― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:12 (three years ago)
its true this would be a nice time to open it up
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:13 (three years ago)
maybe they have some grow slowly plan tho could be wise idk
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:14 (three years ago)
just read that new threads are now limited to 25 posts!?
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:22 (three years ago)
I'm sure they'll open eventually, I would just like to lock down the same username I use everywhere else.
I guess if I miss out, I will survive. :)
As I move thru my 40s and am now closer to 50 than 39, I increasingly feel like maybe ditching all social media is the way. Easy to say, I know...
― alpine static, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:35 (three years ago)
twitters been the only one i use for years now, and who knows if itll last or there will be a compelling replacement, might be the end of the social media erz
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:39 (three years ago)
I just figured it’s deliberate in order to create an air of exclusivity, just like Facebook started out being restricted to Harvard students and gradually expanded to other prestigious schools before conquering the world. Seems smart.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:59 (three years ago)
that could be part of it but theres def a tech aspect too, building a twitter is difficult and expensive for reasons of scale, unless youre facebook then its prob easy
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:04 (three years ago)
agreed the timing is definitely right but there's a new Twitter debacle every few weeks, I assume the timing is always gonna be right
― frogbs, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:09 (three years ago)
unless someone else becomes the new twitter
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:11 (three years ago)
fwiw even if there is a new twitter i dont think itll ever be nearly as big, more of a niche app for journalists degenerate posters and various other specialists, the celebs and casuals have prob mostly moved on
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:12 (three years ago)
I just had a moment on Bluesky that reminded me of my early, non-cynical social media experience. Ned (of course Ned is involved) reposted a post from a woman who wrote a column that I obsessively read a teenager (“Ask Leah” on IGN) that I hadn’t thought about in 20 years. Cool beans. I know it’ll change, because it always does, but I’m really enjoying Bluesky (and I write that as someone who’s been _addicted_ to Twitter since the beginning and Mastodon for the past few years). Maybe social media isn’t entirely bad?
― Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:30 (three years ago)
Yeah I can’t vibe with this, doesn’t Jack run it? The same dipshit who let Nazis run rampant and rolled his ownership share over to Musk?
― half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:39 (three years ago)
apparently jack isnt that involved in it
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:39 (three years ago)
He’s on the board. He’s also a longtime advocate for the underlying architecture (e.g., he advocated for a similar architecture back when he was an engineer at Twitter).
― Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:45 (three years ago)
I mean, holding out for a social media platform that both works well and is not run by people who are at some level craven assholes is probably asking too much. Even if you find one, if it's successful it will still end up getting bought by craven assholes. But I'm not in a hurry to try to figure out what "the one" will be — not that I'd turn down a Bluesky invite, but Twitter and Facebook only got interesting to me once there was a mass of people there.

Mastodon?
― Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 20:09 (three years ago)
I'm just waiting to see which is the one everyone is going to, seems like Bluesky at the moment, prob just gonna wait until everyone else is on it
― frogbs, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 20:11 (three years ago)
of course Ned is involved
Just stalking your soul, it's what I do. (Got to know Leah when she went to grad school at UCI; my own stint had ended and I had shifted to library work by then.)

There’re better ways and we’ve done it before (e.g., DNS, e-mail, WWW, etc.).
― Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 20:26 (three years ago)
some kind of better version of Google reader would be ideal, if we are talking imaginary social media
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 20:32 (three years ago)
Those are open protocols not services. No one owns them per se. It's easy to create a service that hosts data that conforms to the protocol. Mastodon is the closest to this model. Is Blue Sky attempting this in any way?
― octobeard, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 22:08 (three years ago)
Twitter seems to have opened up again? I was able to see a tweet linked in Reddit again today
― octobeard, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 22:09 (three years ago)
Threads is coming to life p. fast. It has search (unlike Mastodon) and loadsa posts (unlike Bluesky). Home timeline is weird though; it shows me whatever it wants, not just who I’m following.
― stet, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 23:23 (three years ago)
lets see what they come up with, my guess its gonna be bad in some begging ass facebook way, like too aimed at "monetization for creators" or something

I'd rather go back to a blog with a curated follow-my-friends-blogs reading list which is what Livejournal was tbh. Something that simple. Why no can has.

and they cant even build a website how many guys do they have at facebook no one knows how to make a site

Facebook's enduring inability to do design and user interfaces well is really a huge mystery to me as a non-tech guy. Surely they can hire as many good designers as they want? But everything always feels a little generic and Walmarty. (It was also why I was sure the Metaverse would be terrible, because how could it not be?)
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 6 July 2023 00:59 (three years ago)
Generic and Walmarty is the goal, they've got to optimize for people seeing shitty ads right up to the point where even boomers abandon it.

as a real fucking degenerate Twitter user, I cannot fathom this idea that what was fun or addictive about the site was debate, that was never true! it was always the surreal humor and dunking on idiots and also finding people that were interesting or knowledgeable, debate was never what was good about it even in the best daysthough I guess for dudes likw Elon who are incapable of being funny or clever or interesting debate is all they have

This is correct afaict https://www.garbageday.email/p/paying-to-use-a-site-you-cant-use
The reason for its success, if you can argue that it was ever really successful, wasn’t that it was cooler than Facebook. It was because of its proximity to power. The reason it was so popular with activists, extremists, journalists, and shitposters was because what you posted there could actually affect culture. The thing that ties together pretty much everything that’s happened on Twitter since it launched in 2006 was the possibility that those who were not in power (or wanted more) could influence those who were. And I don’t think it’s an accident that a deranged billionaire broke that, nor do I think it’s accident that we’re suddenly being offered smaller, insular platforms or an offshoot of a Meta app as replacements. The folks in charge clearly don’t want that to happen again.

Scrolling through twitter tonight is absolutely gut wrenching & it’s not bc of the bored ape floor price. It’s bc so many OG apes I’ve grown w/ since mint are getting their apes liquidated via loan protocols.
