Meta are apparently launching a twitter substitute called "Threads"

* do not for a second trust meta to make a social media app which isn't horrible
* don't want to be reminded of nuclear apocalypse every time I open the app

System and Twitter, sitting in a tree

So far all the shit Musk has thrown around with Twitter hasn't really affected my usage. Unfortunately the announcement of removing Tweetdeck for free has officially put the nail in the coffin. I guess I have to find something new now.

What a dickhead.

Ste, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 09:12 (three years ago)

xpost pretty sure they decided on “threads” because it’s not an easy word to block on Twitter

Roz, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 11:42 (three years ago)

Lol Camraderie

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 4 July 2023 12:34 (three years ago)

ILX has previously long continued to embed tweets after the tweet has been deleted, presumably System just made friends with the API

They sent me a email saying they were discontinuing the API, but as is proper I ignore all emails and it all seemed to keep working so shruggy emoji

Anyone on this thread have a spare bsky invite?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 18:36 (three years ago)

same

mookieproof, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 18:37 (three years ago)

I'm going to predict that Threads will win the soshul meedia wars if anything will, because its a known entitiy, and anyone with an instagram login can start using it right away, so plain old laziness/convenience will win out like it always does.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 06:55 (three years ago)

for some reason* it's the winding up of @_primes_ that hits home

*(reason = me being weird, but it was just such a lovely pointless rigorous simplicity of an account: all the prime numbers in order, now we will never know what the biggest one is)

mark s, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 08:48 (three years ago)

did they post an illegal prime number yet?

lets see what they come up with, my guess its gonna be bad in some begging ass facebook way, like too aimed at "monetization for creators" or something, twitter isnt like the other social apps its for true posters its gotta promote real sicko behavior, which is in tension with the things competent companies want quality conversation, advertiser friendly content, profitability

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 12:00 (three years ago)

bluesky winning the vibe war so far

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 12:18 (three years ago)

threads not yet launching in the EU ftb "regulatory concerns" (data protection)

mark s, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 12:20 (three years ago)

yeah apparently they want to bring all the instargram data over

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 12:21 (three years ago)

yes i dont want the EU looking at my blurry little photos thank you

mark s, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 12:45 (three years ago)

Bluesky is theoretical for most people at this point

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:30 (three years ago)

A service you are not cool enough to be let into

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:31 (three years ago)

I too would like a spare bsky invite if anyone has

Roz, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:31 (three years ago)

Don't forget, at one point gmail was invite-only, too.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:35 (three years ago)

Now would be a particularly good time to roll out to the public, when your main competitor is flailing. Of course if Zuckerberg can get his service rolling faster then it’s probably moot

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:43 (three years ago)

facebooks track record on imitating other social apps is not great

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:47 (three years ago)

We had to stop sign-ups to resolve the tech issues caused by all the people signing up because of Twitter's tech issues

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:53 (three years ago)

we should've stuck with Ello

nashwan, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:01 (three years ago)

I will certainly switch to Bluesky if enough of the people I follow migrate over there, but at this point "I'm done with Twitter. Meet me over on Blue Sky," is like "Look me up next time you're on the west coast."

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:07 (three years ago)

I've been on Bluesky 3 days now; it definitely needs more work but the vibes are ok. I'm sure that will be a fleeting thing though as more conservatives log on and whine about how they're being silenced. It always works for them.

Chris L, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:15 (three years ago)

its pretty funny already the early adopters whining trying to protect their weird lil culture

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:23 (three years ago)

the urgent thing abt social media is that ppl shd do things i like and not do things i dont

mark s, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:11 (three years ago)

thats the thing that really brings the needed frisson to a platform

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 15:16 (three years ago)

I said this already, sorry, but I'd love a Bluesky invite if someone has one to spare. I signed up to be notified of when I can join, like, a month or two ago and have heard nothing.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 17:59 (three years ago)

i dont have any invites btw i had one but i gave it to an irl friend

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:01 (three years ago)

one would think theyll open it up eventually but i have no idea what their staffing/funding sitch is like

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:02 (three years ago)

Not being able to open sign-ups at a time when the competition is flailing is the definition of missing the moment. Luckily for them Twitter is sure to keep getting worse.

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:12 (three years ago)

its true this would be a nice time to open it up

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:13 (three years ago)

maybe they have some grow slowly plan tho could be wise idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:14 (three years ago)

just read that new threads are now limited to 25 posts!?

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:22 (three years ago)

I'm sure they'll open eventually, I would just like to lock down the same username I use everywhere else.

I guess if I miss out, I will survive. :)

As I move thru my 40s and am now closer to 50 than 39, I increasingly feel like maybe ditching all social media is the way. Easy to say, I know...

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:35 (three years ago)

twitters been the only one i use for years now, and who knows if itll last or there will be a compelling replacement, might be the end of the social media erz

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:39 (three years ago)

maybe they have some grow slowly plan tho could be wise idk

I just figured it’s deliberate in order to create an air of exclusivity, just like Facebook started out being restricted to Harvard students and gradually expanded to other prestigious schools before conquering the world. Seems smart.

o. nate, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:59 (three years ago)

that could be part of it but theres def a tech aspect too, building a twitter is difficult and expensive for reasons of scale, unless youre facebook then its prob easy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:04 (three years ago)

agreed the timing is definitely right but there's a new Twitter debacle every few weeks, I assume the timing is always gonna be right

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:09 (three years ago)

unless someone else becomes the new twitter

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:11 (three years ago)

fwiw even if there is a new twitter i dont think itll ever be nearly as big, more of a niche app for journalists degenerate posters and various other specialists, the celebs and casuals have prob mostly moved on

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:12 (three years ago)

I just had a moment on Bluesky that reminded me of my early, non-cynical social media experience. Ned (of course Ned is involved) reposted a post from a woman who wrote a column that I obsessively read a teenager (“Ask Leah” on IGN) that I hadn’t thought about in 20 years. Cool beans. I know it’ll change, because it always does, but I’m really enjoying Bluesky (and I write that as someone who’s been _addicted_ to Twitter since the beginning and Mastodon for the past few years). Maybe social media isn’t entirely bad?

Allen (etaeoe), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:30 (three years ago)

Yeah I can’t vibe with this, doesn’t Jack run it? The same dipshit who let Nazis run rampant and rolled his ownership share over to Musk?

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:39 (three years ago)

apparently jack isnt that involved in it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 19:39 (three years ago)

He’s on the board. He’s also a longtime advocate for the underlying architecture (e.g., he advocated for a similar architecture back when he was an engineer at Twitter).
