Ha, well, not needing any twitter alternative is the healthiest attitude, I think.

Following people on other instances has got a tiny bit better, I think, but still a bit of a faff sometimes. I've found myself actually using hashtags for the first time in my life, as joining in a general conversation on a theme seems less scary there than it ever did on twitter or similar platforms (this will probably change as Mastodon grows, but for now it's a pleasant thing). I also follow a couple of hashtags that put all posts about that topic directly into my main feed, and that's worked well for hearing about niche things and finding people I might want to follow.

i found the mastodon ux a pain in the ass, and i don't think i ever once laughed at a post.

bluesky seems to have settled down a bit, not as funny as it was. there are now a few journalists so it's starting to fulfil the "free bloomberg terminal" twitter use case. they're about to launch the custom algorithms thing, which is like twitter lists or following a hashtag, but much more general. e.g. you can define (or follow) a feed of "all new account first posts" or "all friends of friends".

they're going to say "he broke the internet", but streaming low bitrate audio to ~1m people is, well, it's probably not what spaces is designed for, but it's not a insolubly hard problem either. twitch and youtube both regularly have streams to 5m+ with full video and comments.

As much as we all know that Elon sucks, I have to imagine that the DeSantis team sees an opportunity to align their candidate with someone who is in fact popular with a lot of people, many of whom are probably up for grabs politically. As artless as the video is, the play seems to be: "If you like Elon, vote for me."

The gross thing is DeSantis always tying himself to some daddy--remember his ad where's he's reading Trump's book to his kids?

i'm not sure about musk's level of fame, name/face recognition among the average voter. but i think quite a few people would, upon watching that video, think that elon musk is the candidate. or, if they don't know his name, the guy stepping in and out of vehicles on stage and pointing at things and trying to be cool. the video looks like musk is the candidate and they hired some horrible 3rd rate actor to narrate the video

No. And it's worse than "the former guy" etc. - this is the Republican equivalent of a Democratic candidate using "problematic" and "intersectionality" every other sentence.

Musk was at one point the richest person in the world and was Time magazine person of the year a couple of years ago, so I do think a lot of people are aware of him, even if they don't know the extent of his whole deal.

okay, i got through it. i will say that i am amazed that, by the end, i found myself rooting for and eagerly anticipating the FIFTH time they reused the same clips of an airboat speeding through florida swamps followed by elon musk using a flamethrower. however, they only used the clips four times, over the course of 3 and a half minutes, so i was disappointed
