That's more accurate. I'd also add "if you listen to top 40 radio" because he's finally crossed over, but I don't expect anyone here to have done that.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 00:14 (three years ago)

Knowing of his existence seems pretty unavoidable to me but I don't know what a few posters who willingly listen to him have to do with the Cave thread of different people who are unlikely to listen to pop bro-country at all, much less the extra racist version of it.

I assume he's a marginally more competent version of this crime against humanity

I think about people like this in a similar way to how I think about Jordan Peterson or Andrew Tate, I know of them primarily because I know they are awful people, and I'd rather not spend a lot of time digging into the details of their awfulness because the more I learn, the worse my life becomes. The world, especially the internet, is far too full of people who thrive on negative attention.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 00:36 (three years ago)

another aspect of this is that I am more interested in learning abt Nick Cave's awful behavior because I have friends who post about him in an adulatory fashion and I want to bring solid arguments to them, whereas nobody in my feed knows or cares abt Wallen except (apparently) some of y'all and like one other person, so I don't need to keep up with his bad behavior.

In the USA. I had a look at his thread last night and I don't think there's a single post (out of 100 odd) from outside North America.

“British Morgan Wallen fan” is a truly cursed concept.

lol

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 06:52 (three years ago)

It's a crap name for a country singer, sounds more like the name of a private equity firm

milo, just to yr point about him being unavoidable to you: as others have mentioned, this might be a regional thing. Texas? yeah he’s probably unavoidable. but i live in Philadelphia. i go months without hearing any pop country music in an ambient setting.

hahahah same, except i first read the name (on ilx) two days ago when taking a break from discussing Nick Cave ... y'all know where i live and it's somewhere where one is even less likely to hear pop country music in ambient settings than Philly or Chicago

sarahell, Tuesday, 9 May 2023 16:17 (three years ago)

My sincerest apologies to the ilx community for that completely inappropriate thread derail (as well as the previous two or three completely inappropriate thread derails).

In my defense l, in the moment I thought they were at least a little bit redolent of harmless levity, and therefore amusing. As far as I can tell, no one was really harmed. So... are we cool?

gelatinous cubist (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 00:39 (three years ago)

youtube recommended this video to me today, I was wondering if someone on lix who is more knowledgeable than me about such things could tell me if it sounds like the music AI generated (or partially AI generated)? I like it, anyway

You okay camaraderie?

gelatinous cubist (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:11 (three years ago)

sorry, bit of a pet peeve you could say

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:12 (three years ago)

I used to hang out with some American punks who genuinely thought like this and it still drives me up the wall

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:13 (three years ago)

like make any kind of music with guitars and you'll get at least basic respect

You forgot to add "But Kraftwerk are cool, they're alright..."

acceptable not-guitar music for the mid-90s "punk" world I experienced: Wu-Tang, Aphex Twin/random IDM that was assumed to be Aphex Twin, Atari Teenage Riot, Prodigy (but not the hits)

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:31 (three years ago)

homophobia, misogyny, and racism is where a lot of the anti-dance and anti-electronic music BS comes from— not much has changed since “Disco Demolition Night”

when were these savages born?

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:42 (three years ago)

i thought they went extinct. critically endangered, at the very least.

i do have a friend who has punk roots and plays hardcore, he's allergic to electronic textures but not at all vocal about it. he's the only one though.

I am not saying anyone I know is this far gone now, nor that anyone on here is like this, but there are some underlying hints of it on a certain other thread

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:07 (three years ago)

I'll confess to tuning some EDM out, if there's not some clear 'pop' hook or something.. but I'm mostly indifferent, not an active hater

Sometimes on the right patio, with the right Aperol spritz, it's the perfect thing

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:26 (three years ago)

Chunks of it have always been corny and/or repulsive but that's the same of every genre.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:30 (three years ago)

xxp i saw that on the other thread but like, electronics were the whole of the landscape for a time, right? making music with "real" instruments felt like a total rejection of popular culture. the pendulum is swinging the other way now but i feel like we've seen both extremes

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:33 (three years ago)

I kinda felt that way about Suicide... like they were essentially saying "you boring fucks, you're just playing chuck berry riffs!" to their punk cohort.. they were trying to remake their world as something else entirely, and it didn't involve 'rock' and 'riffs'

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:36 (three years ago)

but suicide are "rock" now

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:39 (three years ago)

that's the imbalance i see atm which is why C@AL's post was a head scratcher.

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:40 (three years ago)

bad example but ykwim

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:46 (three years ago)

Suicide were fairly obviously heavily influenced by 50s rock and roll though.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:50 (three years ago)

... the music of Alan Vega's youth in fact.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:51 (three years ago)

yeah suicide should be "rock", probably. idk about some other things that are "rock" now, though

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:53 (three years ago)

yeah Suicide is a bad example but I was just talking about the things they rejected, not what they embraced

(There may actually be another message board out there where this can be re-litigated lol)

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:59 (three years ago)

acceptable not-guitar music

Fun fact: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart could barely even play guitar

lol yeah the "I don't know about all those dance genres it were all fields in my day" comments on that thread are pretty eyerollworthy.
