He spends most of his time wearing a 'LUV 2 DROWN' t-shirt and gleefully drilling holes in his boat but also frantically scooping out bucketfuls of water on occasion. Like, just let it sink, bruh. works for me but just logging in I realized I haven't really visited Twitter in a while. I think it's still really good for real-time NBA updates but it's no good for anything else anymore. looked through the stuff I RT'd a few months ago and a lot of those people have just went inactive.

Yeah, I got sucked back into Twitter a couple of months ago, and my feed is definitely not the same as it once was. It's quieter, less interesting. Even during the peak Trump-era hellsite years, it felt vital in a way that it really doesn't anymore.

I think with most social media sites you spend a while curating your feed and trying to add as many interesting people as possible, but then it gets to the point where it doesn't even cross your mind to add new people. I think that's where Twitter is at for a lot of people. which is a real problem if folks are actively leaving

That's a good point. I've only followed a very small handful of people over the last few years. There's definitely a sense of stagnation when much of what you see is the people you've been following for years, who are tweeting about the same stuff as always and apparently have no plans to leave.

Yeah I've been watching a lot of typically very left people in my orbit just turn into raging maniacs about "crime! crime! crime!" and "somethin' oughta be done!" lately. Shit I expect to hear from my central Illinois relatives who have always been afraid of "the big city" is now being spouted by lifelong Chicagoans. It's weird and unsettling.

in this case though, it's not even about people taking a narrow view of crime that doesn't connect it to other systemic issues.

what we are seeing is people either making excuses for or even celebrating the cold blooded murder of a mentally ill homeless man.

oh yeah, the reactions to this case have been horrifying and disgusting, but it seems to be tying into a larger national mood right now where an alarming number of people seem to think every urban center is now a crime ridden cesspool

a lot of people just repeat what the people around them are saying. i wonder if any of the people you are hearing were ACAB types in 2020.

That is part of what is alarming and surreal about the subway killing. At a different moment, I could see people rallying around the victim and demanding justice, as happened for so many black victims of white policing or vigilantism in recent years. But for some reason that response — while it exists — is muted now and liberal politicians are making these ambivalent statements about not rushing to judgmebt.

I know there’s a NY thread somewhere but I have to say that the both sidesism in the blatant vigilante murder of a homeless individual on the Subway has got me fucking furious. All the news coverage does is confirm that the US hates poor people, disdains those with mental illnesses, and wishes death upon those populations.

I was waiting to hear where this marine was from. Was he a new yorker? A tourist? Apparently he's from West Islip. Long Island. Which makes me think, as I often do, of the article I read some time ago talking about how the people who are the most scared of the city are those who live close to it but not in it. The slightly further out suburbs.
