seems clear the writing was on the wall for Twitter even before Elon bought it, I remember a few higher ups saying stuff like "we basically lucked into what Twitter became, but growth has slowed dramatically and we don't know how to turn things around"

so I don't really know what Elon could've done to turn it around, but it sure as shit seems like all his ideas so far have been bad ones. though tbh it is pretty funny that the choice to prioritize his own fans in the replies was the nail in the coffin, I know this ain't how he's gonna see it but it should be clear to Elon that Twitter is awful now because he just sucks so much

well theres a difference between being profitable but not growing enough to satisfy wall street and being unprofitable bleeding users and careening wildly towards bankruptcy

Before Elon it was probably the stuff that made Twitter better than Facebook, etc. that was keeping it from growing fast enough for Wall Street.

With Elon, it's the stink of incel and Nazi that causes money to speedily run away from it

also its one of those common things where if you had ownership that was willing to focus on the core product and not just blow money out the door chasing growth it easily couldve been a good business just not good enough for wall street

best case scenario for them prob wouldve been to be mildly profitable but not growing for long enough for the stock price to drop a lot then someone takes it private and runs it as a nice business, basically a fairy tale in todays financialized reality tho

echos of all the new media companies vice etc going bankrupt under the weight of foolish vc debt despite being profitable

it probably wasn't sustainable with it's ~2022 headcount and ~2022 growth for more than a couple more years, but it was not cash flow emergency musk has portrayed it as.

Yeah, I got sucked back into Twitter a couple of months ago, and my feed is definitely not the same as it once was. It's quieter, less interesting. Even during the peak Trump-era hellsite years, it felt vital in a way that it really doesn't anymore.

I think with most social media sites you spend a while curating your feed and trying to add as many interesting people as possible, but then it gets to the point where it doesn't even cross your mind to add new people. I think that's where Twitter is at for a lot of people. which is a real problem if folks are actively leaving

That's a good point. I've only followed a very small handful of people over the last few years. There's definitely a sense of stagnation when much of what you see is the people you've been following for years, who are tweeting about the same stuff as always and apparently have no plans to leave.
