Kim Kimberly, there was a time not long ago when the federal body that oversees those programs went through a branding exercise. I was marginally involved in this in my capacity as a PR consultant to HHS and HCFA.

Unfortunately they decided to call it CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which infuriatingly does not align with the abbreviation at all).

They did not listen to my impassioned argument for calling it MAMA (Medicare and Medicaid Administration).

Honestly I am still a little bitter about this. It's been 20+ years. I waffle between wishing that my clients would take my advice (because I am cute and occasionally come up with a clever idea), and realizing that no one should take my advice ever (because I am a deeply flawed person and sometimes I stake my career and my reputation on pursuing a stupid pun).

I've worked in Medicaid for maybe 12 years now and although i get Medicare is federal for olds and Medicaid is state for low income, I still don't understand it. Some claims Medicare pays a portion of and Medicaid pays a portion and then there is third party insurance (which makes no sense because you can't get Medicaid over 65 - or whatever it is now - and visa versa) and it's just like FFS universal healthcare, please.

Medicaid also for certain disability categories, which is just one small drop in the vast bucket of how unnecessarily complex and arcane our health care "system" is
