When I’m dumb enough to click on a Musk tweet or reply I used to see people roasting him, now all I get are his most pathetic reply guys cheering him on.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 4 April 2023 19:32 (three years ago)
it looks like blocking him is holding this time
I previously had him blocked and the site "mysteriously" unblocked him

So now NPR is "state-affiliated media." I so want to just dump Twitter completely, but I'm a reporter, a lot of the people I cover are on there saying things, I can't just turn it off.
NPR is not state affiliated media. It is public media. The NYT is not propaganda. It is the most robust news organization in the English speaking world. The bias as to who is being targeted on this site by its leadership is so very clear. And it’s not a small thing. pic.twitter.com/K4h8kpsqkC— Lulu (@lourdesgnavarro) April 5, 2023

There really should be a mass media defection from Twitter, all legitimate news orgs should just drop it. I can't believe Twitter engagement adds much to anyone's bottom line.

it's like elon just put his own dipshit face in the corner of the screen, it's the exact kind of reminder that you're on the site of an early teenage boy
― it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Wednesday, 5 April 2023 15:31 (three years ago)
NPR technically is state-affiliated since it was created by congress ha-ha
― 龜, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 15:34 (three years ago)
tesla and spacex both get far more money by conforming to the preferences of the federal government than NPR

YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS ERA OF TWITTER BUT YOU CAN'T DENY THAT IT'S FINDING NEW WAYS TO INNOVATE THAT WOULD HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN COMPLETELY INCONCEIVABLE, LIKE "MAKING ME UNHAPPY TO SEE A PICTURE OF A DOG"— Christine Love (@christinelove) April 5, 2023
https://www.npr.org/about-npr/178660742/public-radio-finances
that tweet did get me curious about who actually funds npr. while npr itself isn't funded by the gov, it does receive member fees from its member stations, who themselves are funded (a little bit) by the CPB, which effectively makes NPR federally funded.
that said, i agree with caek that tesla/space X are far more subsidized by the gov (and honestly, what industry isn't the government subsidizing in some way?) and it's obviously not the same circumstance as china daily, etc.
― 龜, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 15:47 (three years ago)
there are legit usa gov media outlets like radio free europe which btw did not get a tag
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 15:48 (three years ago)
i think i know somebody who works at voices of america or a VoA affiliated org
and yeah, not expecting elon to be consistent in the least here hah
― 龜, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 15:49 (three years ago)
iirc NPR has never gotten more than 4% of their money from government grants in my lifetime

new twitter just dropped
Today we're announcing Substack Notes. Notes lets writers publish short-form posts and recommend almost anything: quotes, links, images, and comments. It's coming soon and will look like this pic.twitter.com/jxDkjK0ix2— Hamish McKenzie (@hamishmckenzie) April 5, 2023

man, liberals going to bat for like the sanctity of npr or nytimes or whatever is almost more cringe than elon.

substack already has that chat thing that's kind of weird
they turned it on and all of the sudden I was getting a bunch of notifications from people chatting in a group attached to a newsletter I was following
― mh, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 16:45 (three years ago)
imo it is pretty funny npr got tagged and not voice of america, though
pretty sure elon has no idea what voice of america is

I have a Substack but I don't have the app on my phone so I've never used the chat function, and the Notes thing doesn't seem particularly relevant to my life, either.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 5 April 2023 16:52 (three years ago)
elon is the absolute worst and i hate twitter right now, and you absolutely do not have to hand anything at all to him please god, but reifying the ostensible neutrality of the nytimes and npr and saying things like "if you don't believe the ny times and can't watch a hollywood movie, you must be a deluded fundie trump nut", like in this real tweet re-tweeted by otherwise otm opinion guy jamelle bouie - that right there is obnoxious horseshit that should be treated with contempt imo.
A feature of information bubbles is people inside them think beliefs I’ll politely call esoteric are normal—“everyone” thinks it—and reinforce that fiction with each other.More likely many of those rejecting news, movies, and the medical profession today did so 10 years ago too. pic.twitter.com/aoBhuL7csS— Nicholas Grossman (@NGrossman81) April 4, 2023

tbf these people can't watch Hollywood movies because they are woke, not because they are suck

poor people often have a set of unsavory beliefs that mostly come down to the trauma of being poor and trying to claw out some autonomy but open arrogance and contempt from everyone who isn't poor sure could be dialed back a notch or two

The "can't watch hollywood films" but is such nonsense anyway, sure there's a cottage industry of complaining about wokeness in franchises but a) everyone goes to see them anyway and b) Hollywood absolutely churns out constant product tailored to this demographic. like c'mon Elon was creaming himself over top gun: maverick just recently.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 17:22 (three years ago)
A few months ago I would've mounted a half hearted defence of the NYTimes based on the idea that yeah sure they're mostly terrible but no paper that so consistently shows up the UK media for the absolute clowns they are can be all bad, but since then it's turned out that despite this they are still keen to import UK media's terfness, so fuck 'em.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 April 2023 17:26 (three years ago)
legitimate grievances with elite institutions, a growing sense of mistrust and alienation, has been capitalized on by bad actors. people feel alienated from the political process and with good reason so they turn to demagogues who tell them it is the "woke" who are doing this. large banks, the federal government, legacy media institutions, and yale graduates generally should look in the mirror if they want to know why they aren't trusted. the contempt for authority we have now is not taking a coherent form -- again, bad actors are capitalizing on the sentiment -- but it's not like the new york times or whatever is just innocent and well meaning.
― treeship., Wednesday, 5 April 2023 17:28 (three years ago)
more than that, their interest is specifically class interest and specious fantasies driven by class anxiety aren't any less prevalent among relatively well-off people. plenty of bad-faith demagogues for democratic voters too, see centrist opinion columnists.
