The amount of celebrities straight up saying they don’t want the check and would be embarrassed to have it is astounding, truly an all time marketing failure

Kinda feel Elon ain’t actually gonna go through with it in the end, like he’ll get enough removed to make a mess of things and then just move on to an even dumber idea

One small difference here is once you subscribe you don’t have to write the news articles yourself

he really thought his plan would work cut costs to the bone then make enough from subscriptions to be profitable but it didnt

I mean, I really like reading twitter every day, it is kind of addictive honestly and I want it to survive and I like all of the people I follow on it and want to read posts from them every day - in film, literature, gay/trans issues, politics, music, art - so I can see he has a point, and he's saying you will pay for the pleasure of the reading the NYT but not twitter

so I'm not sure

I would’ve paid money to read a different Twitter at a different time in my life but now that I’ve been off of it for months I’m like it’s fine actually I don’t need tweets in my life at all

that's the thing though you can still read it for free, albeit a shittier version where white supremecists automatically get their tweets boosted. Twitter Blue mostly just amplifies your posts, which is a dumb as shit business model since like 90% of the sites users don't really tweet much anyway

the idea of paying for a link-through reading model like apple news or w/e makes sense because, of the few people that click through headlines and read articles, a lot are on twitter!

they could have even done an official excerpt thing to preempt screen grabs somehow, kick that traffic upstream and maybe show the highlighted bit in the tweet but you click through and go to the article

please don’t implement this, it’s my prior art now

feel like they maybe were going to get to something like that, could even drive traffic to the official app, but they got yoked

amazing how no one whos ever run twitter including the guy who made it has understood it, maybe no one does

i’ll say it many times, but that is what made google
reader good. you could see the social bit about what your friends were interested in and commenting on and then go right to the article. doing all of that in context and being able to do links to the content would be pretty nice

no one has broken it like elon has tho they knew enough to not kill the goose

I feel like all this stuff was pitched at jack and he was like hmm I will consider it on my next desert fast while I am meditating and then he got back to a computer only to realize he liked looking for hypebeast clothes more than working (relatable)

jack was the best ceo cause he just did other things instead of running twitter

btw a short fund just put out a big report on how block is a fraud and also used a lot for crime

honestly difficult to think of a worse CEO for Twitter than Musk, it would be like making Kyrie the commissioner of the NBA while simultaneously allowing him to play

yeah apparently jack had bragged about the many rap songs cash app was mentioned in as a way to demonstrate how hot it was and in the short report they go through and show how all the lyrics are talking about using it for crime lol

your subscription to NYT helps pay the people who write the things you read, none of your twitter blue subscription will go to anyone who writes what you read, seems a p important distinction. though elon's "point" follows the path of other disruptors, like streaming music, illegal downloading, etc, where the people who make the money are the people who design the structure that delivers you the art, while the artist is impoverished.

When Tweetshelf shut down its free service a few weeks ago, I found myself addictively scrolling Twitter again. Now I'm considering paying for Tweetshelf so I can see the articles people are sharing without feeding my habit. But that's also a feature of Twitter Blue, so it sort of makes me feel like a chump, even tho I wouldn't be giving my money directly to Twitter.
