can’t believe Elon would start behaving weirdly wrt twitter, memes, or himself in April 2023

Ryan Broderick recently wrote about how he'd cracked the Twitter algo:https://www.garbageday.email/p/i-remembered-how-awful-it-is-to-go

Aaaahhhhhahahaha Elon got mad at people dunking on twitter blue subscribers. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/BhZW7Y5TBc— ʎǝlpǝH ɐnɥsoſ (@JoshuaHedley) April 2, 2023

As far as I can tell, the meme does not work in that context...
― m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Sunday, 2 April 2023 23:02 (three years ago)
i hadn’t realized how shitty the twitter blue features are.. who in their right mind would pay for any of this lol

I liked what Chrissy Tiegen said, "oh my god just take the checkmark already who cares"
― Dan S, Sunday, 2 April 2023 23:22 (three years ago)
The amount of celebrities straight up saying they don’t want the check and would be embarrassed to have it is astounding, truly an all time marketing failure
Kinda feel Elon ain’t actually gonna go through with it in the end, like he’ll get enough removed to make a mess of things and then just move on to an even dumber idea
― frogbs, Sunday, 2 April 2023 23:36 (three years ago)

One small difference here is once you subscribe you don’t have to write the news articles yourself
― frogbs, Monday, 3 April 2023 00:34 (three years ago)
he really thought his plan would work cut costs to the bone then make enough from subscriptions to be profitable but it didnt
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 00:37 (three years ago)
I mean, I really like reading twitter every day, it is kind of addictive honestly and I want it to survive and I like all of the people I follow on it and want to read posts from them every day - in film, literature, gay/trans issues, politics, music, art - so I can see he has a point, and he's saying you will pay for the pleasure of the reading the NYT but not twitter
so I'm not sure
― Dan S, Monday, 3 April 2023 00:42 (three years ago)
I would’ve paid money to read a different Twitter at a different time in my life but now that I’ve been off of it for months I’m like it’s fine actually I don’t need tweets in my life at all
― G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 3 April 2023 00:57 (three years ago)
that's the thing though you can still read it for free, albeit a shittier version where white supremecists automatically get their tweets boosted. Twitter Blue mostly just amplifies your posts, which is a dumb as shit business model since like 90% of the sites users don't really tweet much anyway
― frogbs, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:02 (three years ago)
the idea of paying for a link-through reading model like apple news or w/e makes sense because, of the few people that click through headlines and read articles, a lot are on twitter!they could have even done an official excerpt thing to preempt screen grabs somehow, kick that traffic upstream and maybe show the highlighted bit in the tweet but you click through and go to the article please don’t implement this, it’s my prior art now
― mh, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:02 (three years ago)
feel like they maybe were going to get to something like that, could even drive traffic to the official app, but they got yoked
― mh, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:03 (three years ago)
amazing how no one whos ever run twitter including the guy who made it has understood it, maybe no one does
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:04 (three years ago)
i’ll say it many times, but that is what made googlereader good. you could see the social bit about what your friends were interested in and commenting on and then go right to the article. doing all of that in context and being able to do links to the content would be pretty nice
― mh, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:05 (three years ago)
no one has broken it like elon has tho they knew enough to not kill the goose
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:05 (three years ago)
I feel like all this stuff was pitched at jack and he was like hmm I will consider it on my next desert fast while I am meditating and then he got back to a computer only to realize he liked looking for hypebeast clothes more than working (relatable)
― mh, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:06 (three years ago)
jack was the best ceo cause he just did other things instead of running twitter
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:07 (three years ago)
btw a short fund just put out a big report on how block is a fraud and also used a lot for crime
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:08 (three years ago)
Block paid to promote a video for a song called “Cash App” which described paying contract killers through the app. The song’s artist was later arrested for attempted murder.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 3 April 2023 01:23 (three years ago)
honestly difficult to think of a worse CEO for Twitter than Musk, it would be like making Kyrie the commissioner of the NBA while simultaneously allowing him to play
― frogbs, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:24 (three years ago)
yeah apparently jack had bragged about the many rap songs cash app was mentioned in as a way to demonstrate how hot it was and in the short report they go through and show how all the lyrics are talking about using it for crime lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 01:26 (three years ago)
Based on current trends, probably close to zero new advertisers on Twitter by April
― frogbs, Monday, 3 April 2023 02:23 (three years ago)
You mean real companies advertising. Dick pills, crypto scams, supplements, shitty home furnishings will take up the slack I’m sure.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 3 April 2023 02:50 (three years ago)
lol frogbs
― mookieproof, Monday, 3 April 2023 03:26 (three years ago)
Jack has good ideas but he is not a good executive.
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 3 April 2023 08:49 (three years ago)
so I can see he has a point, and he's saying you will pay for the pleasure of the reading the NYT but not twitter
your subscription to NYT helps pay the people who write the things you read, none of your twitter blue subscription will go to anyone who writes what you read, seems a p important distinction. though elon's "point" follows the path of other disruptors, like streaming music, illegal downloading, etc, where the people who make the money are the people who design the structure that delivers you the art, while the artist is impoverished.
― dicbo=v2-ubswizzb&hrt (stevie), Monday, 3 April 2023 10:01 (three years ago)
and obvs a lot of the NYT is terrible but
― dicbo=v2-ubswizzb&hrt (stevie), Monday, 3 April 2023 10:02 (three years ago)
someone shd start the nytimes for tweets lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 11:40 (three years ago)
this is not the Succession thread (is it?)
― dicbo=v2-ubswizzb&hrt (stevie), Monday, 3 April 2023 11:45 (three years ago)
twitter meets nytimes meets ilx on the blockchain
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 11:57 (three years ago)
When Tweetshelf shut down its free service a few weeks ago, I found myself addictively scrolling Twitter again. Now I'm considering paying for Tweetshelf so I can see the articles people are sharing without feeding my habit. But that's also a feature of Twitter Blue, so it sort of makes me feel like a chump, even tho I wouldn't be giving my money directly to Twitter.

awww, is your 44 billion dollar purchase not going so well?
They should really get rid of that 100 IQ maximum limit for creating an account on Instagram— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 3, 2023

Today's new weirdness: retweets are no longer labeled as such, so it looks like people you don't follow are randomly showing up in your feed.
― Chris L, Monday, 3 April 2023 16:36 (three years ago)
wow (working on web)
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 April 2023 17:04 (three years ago)
the site icon/logo has now been replaced by a doge

I swear to God, if this is an April Fools joke that was supposed to happen 2 days ago...
― Chris L, Monday, 3 April 2023 17:51 (three years ago)
Also seeing unlabeled retweets in for you and the shotcoin thing. Good stuff.
