A lot of people that showed up on 1/6 expected nothing to happen to them because they thought Trump's army/national guard/etc would protect them. Or swoop in and join them
A few of them were quoted in the press as being shocked when this didn't happen.
Your Proud Boys etc don't care about jail, but good luck getting the random families to show up again

yeah agreed knowing what they know now the average trump fan is not going to try another jan 6 but the hardcore militants could get up to stuff
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 March 2023 17:53 (three years ago)
across the various wingnut channels when people suggest showing up somewhere with guns or whatever half the responses are accusing it of being a fed honeypot, mostly theyre not really cut out for that sort of thing on jan 6 they just thought they were allowed to
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 March 2023 17:55 (three years ago)
I also suspect the authorities will be more aggressive in putting them down, and the wingnut warriors know that.
― nickn, Friday, 24 March 2023 18:04 (three years ago)
Will they though? I don't see nypd being eager to arrest their own.
― Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Friday, 24 March 2023 18:58 (three years ago)
I do think the right wing militia groups are still scary and in FL the Three Percenters literally showed up to 'protect' the Flagler school board from a trans activist group that was protesting it and brought weapons and armor and intimidated and shouted hate invective at them and even tried to follow some of them home.
that's the shit that keeps me up at night. the activist group didn't buckle though.

You can tell that farm policy, the subject he was supposed to address, bores him to tears and he knows it bores most of his base, too, so he couldn't resist leaving the script and clowning on the whole subject like a naughty kid clowning for the class during a boring book report. His base loves that shit and why not.

The New York grand jury being used for a criminal investigation of former President Donald Trump is not expected to hear evidence for the next month, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

if they can only push it a little further into primary season they'll be firmly in the "well gee we couldn't possibly do anything that would interfere with an election" zone
― frogbs, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 17:28 (three years ago)
fwiw I did listen to an Ezra Klein podcast about this and his conclusion is that people shouldn't get their hopes up about the Stormy Daniels thing, in fact of the 20+ investigations Trump is currently under it's one of the least promising. the GA election interference and classified docs investigations are not only way stronger cases but obviously much more serious and damaging felonies. they're also cases which have won every mid-course court battle and the GA thing is about as open and shut as you can get. for political reasons you wouldn't really want *this* to be the thing he first gets indicted for anyway.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 17:43 (three years ago)
i'm sure that's true, at the point just annoyed for how many outlets fell for his self-serving bullshit so easily (last I saw he'd pulled in $1.5 million since his "arrest" claim)
but i don't think he'll ever be indicted for any of those other investigations either, this is all just nearly* meaningless show.
(* - obviously i'm all for this shit getting aired out and documented, so thankful for the investigations to at least pull that weight)
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 17:47 (three years ago)
Starting to think our justice system is overly populated with people who are legit terrified of his violent base, so they just keep punting on everything.
This is why he whips up the violent rhetoric, the intimidation works! Straight out of his old NYC mobster wannabe playbook.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 18:03 (three years ago)
do grand juries usually take a month off before reaching a decision?
― treeship., Wednesday, 29 March 2023 18:09 (three years ago)
tbf media outlets are concerned first and foremost with audience engagement - trump's false claims about his arrest were a gift to them, and this delay is another gift
― c u (crüt), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 18:09 (three years ago)
this hiatus was previously planned, not something they arbitrarily decided today. it's just that they didn't have an indictment prior to the previously scheduled hiatus
― hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 18:18 (three years ago)

― INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 18:21 (three years ago)
xpost - yeah the reporting is (unsurprisingly at this point) worded terribly. they aren't taking a month off, they are taking two weeks off starting April 10th. so the reality seems to be more "we won't hear anything more for probably a month" instead of an actual month long break.
The break is due in large part to a pre-scheduled two weeks off beginning April 10, the day after Easter, according to the people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because grand jury proceedings are secret.
