Not sure if you were responding to me or YMP, but it's not that specific bombshell, but that we've been told about 15-20 alleged bombshells since last Friday, which makes it hard to acknowledge what might be legit new developments worth watching.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:00 (three years ago)

It was to Tracer

Like the original tweet posted was from last night saying "omg the District Court ordered Trump's lawyer to testify by midnight, something must have prompted them to act fast", I then posted a tweet showing that it likely meant Corcoran had tapes and transcriptions that he had to hand over, and the news just confirmed that is exactly what happened. The district court used the words "criminal scheme" to describe what Trump did and ordered him to testify against Trump and turn over all of those recordings. they believe Trump committed a crime and his attorney knowingly aided him

This isn't speculation. It happened.

Like it blows my mind that...

Tuesday: "Major bombshell coming"
Wednesday: "Confirmed, thing happened exactly as described, very serious"

Is being put in the same league as

2016: "Major info dump coming out on Friday"

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:05 (three years ago)

idk I get how exhausting this all is but it's not like there weren't bombshells every week or two during his presidency, it's just Trump is immune to all that shit

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:06 (three years ago)

I rather prefer hopeful speculation about possible consequences of his actions to the constant stream of "nothing will come of this" and trump death fantasies itt.

BrianB, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:14 (three years ago)

Trump can still appeal the DC Circuit ruling to the SCOTUS. Knowing him, he will try. Whatever evidence of a "criminal scheme" the original judge saw before her ruling, it was developed independently of the materials and testimony being demanded by the court order. One suspects that independent evidence is fairly strong to warrant these rulings.

I am not necessarily saying "nothing will come of this."

Just, I'll celebrate when there are some actual consequences for this mofo. We've been hearing about potential legal peril for years. I'm not uncorking the champagne until something real happens.

years ago there weren't multiple active cases in criminal court against him, there was a Special Investigation that many of us (me included) put too much faith in, and impeachment proceedings that we knew wouldn't progress to conviction in the Senate, and a whole bunch of unsourced rumors.

this is tangible information about the proceedings of an actual criminal case where his own lawyer has been ordered to testify against him - something about 5 million degrees more severity than he faced while in office or since, up until this point. you may not find that important or interesting, many of us do.

as Aimless points out, he can and probably will appeal to SCOTUS, but this SCOTUS has proven they care more about issues than protecting specific individuals who aren't even in office any more, esp given their lack of desire to even hear his lawsuits regarding 'election fraud', and their refusal to overturn a lower court and block the release of his tax returns. they could rule the court overstepped. they might not. but what happened is quite literally a big deal.

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:32 (three years ago)

(and when I say 'care more about issues', let me be VERY CLEAR that I mean "care more about advancing the extremely racist, misogynist, and deadly issues that the extreme right-wing death cult keeps sending through the court system" and not actually doing their actual jobs)

I'm not a lawyer and likely don't know enough about the grand jury process, or maybe it's just reporters using confusing terminology, but if they haven't finished hearing the case how can anyone know for certain the indictment is imminent? I understand that the significant majority of cases before grand jury result in indictments, but the order of things here seems confusing.

the D.A. should have issued a statement after trump's tweet about getting arrested on tuesday saying that the grand jury hadn't finished deliberating and any indictments that follow the deliberations will be revealed at that time.

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 14:39 (three years ago)

now it looks like they are backtracking due to political pressure.

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 14:39 (three years ago)

however, it's not all on the DA office. the times and other news outlets were citing inside sources saying his indictment was "imminent."

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:28 (three years ago)

skepticism that there will be no legal consequences I understand, saying "this all just makes him stronger" is ludicrous

obsidian crocogolem (sleeve), Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:34 (three years ago)

at some level i think people want him back. they want to see him in handcuffs, they want to see his goons riot and then get arrested, etc. it's like a sequel to a hit movie.

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:34 (three years ago)

xp - yeah I'm def not onboard "this will make him stronger" train, but the former absolutely. the most likely worst (best?) case outcome in any of the ongoing cases is that he'll end up with a minimal, "symbolic", slap on the wrist fine that he supporters will happily pony up for and he'll continue to sow chaos to uncritical media dipshits for another decade from his gold-plated compound.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:37 (three years ago)

the thing that's causing my brain to go crack-ping right now is that Michael Cohen ALREADY served time for trying to cover this up, which is almost certainly a much harsher punishment than what the man who ordered him to do it will get, and now Trump is using Cohen's "criminal history" as evidence that he's not a reliable witness, it's making me feel like Frank Grimes right now

frogbs, Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:41 (three years ago)

I think the legal system is simply not designed for, and perhaps has never faced, a chaos agent as overwhelming as Trump.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:45 (three years ago)

maybe his whole game is just to make all go insane.

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:47 (three years ago)

i think he relishes the contradictions and the stunned look on people's faces as they are plowed down by the firehose of bullshit

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:47 (three years ago)

yea to make another Simpsons reference this is the Mr. Burns thing where he has so many health problems that none of them can get through the door to actually kill him, it sure seems like a big problem with these investigations is the fact that there are so many happening at once and he committed so many crimes that we're still discovering new ones

frogbs, Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:50 (three years ago)

It seems like it shouldn’t matter though. People can be tried for several independent crimes.

treeship., Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:53 (three years ago)

and there's the rub, there is so much about the last seven years of this guy's life that "should" have happened and yet... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tbqh, even with the knowledge that we are in a completely unprecedented era wrt what is deemed "acceptable" for a politician, i still have trouble wrapping my brain around how there were stretches where this fuckin' guy would have things come out weekly that had killed entire careers in the recent past!

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 March 2023 16:01 (three years ago)

maybe we're all just living in a simulation, or the dream my brain is concocting while I'm in a coma

dicbo=v2-ubswizzb&hrt (stevie), Thursday, 23 March 2023 16:28 (three years ago)

we are in a completely unprecedented era wrt what is deemed "acceptable" for a politician

to be fair a lot of what's "acceptable" now applies to Trump and Trump only. I think the "nothing matters lol" mentality has caused Republicans to lose a lot of winnable races, even to the extent they lost a Senate seat in Alabama because they didn't want to cut ties with a dude who was probably a pedophile. they ran a lot of freaks and weirdos in the midterms and nearly all of them lost. Boebert was in a R+20 district and won by like 3 votes vs. a dude nobody had ever heard of. Trump's been a known quality as a celebrity and a scumbag for decades so I think he's kinda grandfathered into the anti-mattering shield. its kinda like how a bunch of rock musicians from the 60s almost certainly did a lot of dubious shit that would absolutely get you cancelled today (and you know because they wrote it into their own memoirs and went "ah yeah, those were the days") but nobody cares because "that's just how it was back then".

frogbs, Thursday, 23 March 2023 16:35 (three years ago)

Y'all the impending indictment news didn't all come from Trump. The date did.

The "he may be indicted soon" came from the fact that Bragg actually offered Trump the opportunity to testify before the Grand Jury, which is a usual sign that charges are forthcoming. Usually such an offer isn't granted if charges aren't coming - it's a last ditch chance to give defendants to answer grand jury questions before and indictment. This isn't like a public trial where you're forced to read tea leaves.

Enhanced Security protocols at the courthouse began well in advance of Trump's "I'm being arrested Tuesday statement", which was another acknowledgement of there being a feeling that charges were coming.

Bragg might ultimately decide not to, who knows, but the media didn't just get fed this by Trump
