these people are also bad with numbers though. like "surely this would happen to someone I know" is not really something that goes through their head. they dont know how "the media" actually works because they don't watch real news. same as the whole thing about how undocumented folks are getting 100k/year in government assistance. no I don't know any personally but everyone knows they're all over the place. they're with the AR-15s that are saving lives on a daily basis

New: Prosecutors Signal Criminal Charges for Trump Are Likely https://t.co/O5uuprV1d4— Jonah Bromwich (@Jonesieman) March 9, 2023
The Manhattan district attorney’s office recently signaled to Donald J. Trump’s lawyers that he could face criminal charges for his role in the payment of hush money to a porn star, the strongest indication yet that prosecutors are nearing an indictment of the former president, according to four people with knowledge of the matter. The prosecutors offered Mr. Trump the chance to testify next week before the grand jury that has been hearing evidence in the potential case, the people said. Such offers almost always indicate an indictment is close; it would be unusual for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, to notify a potential defendant without ultimately seeking charges against him.In New York, potential defendants have the right to answer questions in the grand jury before they are indicted, but they rarely testify, and Mr. Trump is likely to decline the offer. His lawyers could also meet privately with the prosecutors in hopes of fending off criminal charges.Any case would mark the first indictment of a former American president, and could upend the 2024 presidential race. It would also elevate Mr. Bragg to the national stage, though not without risk.

sigh
In New York, falsifying business records can amount to a crime, albeit a misdemeanor. To elevate the crime to a felony charge, Mr. Bragg’s prosecutors must show that Mr. Trump’s “intent to defraud” included an intent to commit or conceal a second crime. In this case, that second crime could be a violation of New York State election law. While hush money is not inherently illegal, the prosecutors could argue that the $130,000 payout effectively became an improper donation to Mr. Trump’s campaign, under the theory that because the money silenced Ms. Daniels, it benefited his candidacy.Combining the criminal charge with a violation of state election law would be a novel legal theory for any criminal case, let alone one against the former president, raising the possibility that a judge or appellate court could throw it out or reduce the felony charge to a misdemeanor.

8. USAA (2.0 million)
this is a side point, but what is the deal with USAA? they do insane amounts of advertising, so much on NFL games which is some of the most expensive ad slots that exist...all to market and insurance company who can't sell to anyone who didn't serve in the military? always seemed off to me
heck even Rob Gronkowski can't get insurance through them

My dad was in the Air Force in the early '70s. He must have become a USAA member at some point, because USAA members can pass membership to their kids afaict in perpetuity. I have no other connections to the military, but my kids should be able to use USAA, too.

definitely verbatim conversation quotes:
Trump contended that DeSantis pleaded with him for an endorsement during his first run for governor, when polls showed him trailing his primary challenger, then-Florida agricultural commissioner Adam Putnam.“I said ‘You are so dead right now you are not going, no endorsement is going to save you. George Washington won’t save you.’ He said, ‘I’m telling you, if you endorse me, I have a chance,’” Trump said.

its kinda funny and pretty dicey that this is the thing hes going to get tried for cause paying someone to shut up isnt against the law its done all the time instead theyre making the argument that paying her was for the benefit of his campaign and therefor violated campaign laws which is not a particularly common way of thinking about things, youd think if you were going to arrest the ex pres youd want to do it for something rock solid
― lag∞n, Saturday, 18 March 2023 14:57 (three years ago)
Most likely Trump's attorneys were told by the Manhattan DA's office that an indictment would likely issue early next week and that he would need to surrender on Tuesday and appear in court. That would not be an "arrest" but Trump is trying to dramatize this for his supporters. https://t.co/DN4bYLhkCM— Renato Mariotti (@renato_mariotti) March 18, 2023
Anyway, this may just be the tip of the iceberg. There's little doubt he's committed numerous crimes in numerous ways in numerous states. That's never really been in question. The issue has been prosecution, which, go figure, only really ramped up once he was out of office. Though not least because several of his crimes (Georgia, January 6, classified docs) were committed on the way out.
