heh total rewrite should do the trick
āA small API change had massive ramifications,ā Musk tweeted later in the day, after Twitter investor Marc Andreessen posted a screenshot showing that the companyās API failures were trending on the site. āThe code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.ā
NEW: Twitter went down today because its migration to a paid API has a single site reliability engineer attached to it. Hereās @ZoeSchiffer and me on the high price of cutting costs:https://t.co/yjAHeVkgYl pic.twitter.com/6QVURpHagc— Casey Newton (@CaseyNewton) March 6, 2023

Someone pointed out that the biggest difference between hiring now and when Circuit City went belly up is that most employers now run their past employment checks through Equifax instead of just calling references.

My āFor youā feed is now just showing random accounts. Thereās no indication of how they relate to anyone I follow. Thatās entirely new since yesterday. (Not like itās all Elmo and catturd, it does seem vaguely relevant to my interests.)

hilariously, since it restored all of my previous tweets (from 2021 and earlier), it flagged one of my 2 year old tweets as offensive (which is the one that got me banned in the first place) and temp banned me for it...again.
good system you got there.

I don't think I even have a 'for you' feed on my app? It's just 'Latest' or 'top tweets'. But I swear tweets are showing from people I've never followed, and not as 'promoted' or anything either.
― kinder, Friday, 10 March 2023 16:11 (three years ago)
prob just havent updated your app since they made the change
― lagān, Friday, 10 March 2023 18:34 (three years ago)
yep, I just started seeing a bunch of tweets popping up on both tabs from folks that I don't follow, aren't being retweeted or even liked by anyone I follow and aren't promoted (at least they aren't being tagged that way). not exclusively, but the vast majority are crypto related or accounts pushing OnlyFans content. cool app.

Yeah I was trying to use the mute button even more liberally than before their latest downgrade but itās just pointless, now Iāve given up on āFor Youā completely. (I donāt use the app anymore, deleted it a while back likely based on recommendation from this thread.)

Always be blocking anyone who's annoying, stupid or both.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 00:06 (three years ago)
i only use twitter on desktop browser now since they have ruined the mobile web interface in an attempt to force people into the app (where you can't block ads)
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 00:16 (three years ago)
Milo Z otm. Or anyone whoās just is too verbose tbh. Guess that qualifies as āannoyingā but itās more just about awareness of social media etiquette imo. (Akm I donāt find the mobile site much worse than the desktop, I donāt really see any ads, have them all blocked.)The net effect of me completely abandoning āFor Youā recommendations is that I drill down even deeper into my well of politics because political media accounts post the most consistently (and professionally really), and itās basically the only thriving media ecosystem left on Twitter. And I probably would never really have been active on Twitter but for its role in the London pirate radio scene, probably fifteen years ago ā and of course when I finally jumped onboard the site I was a decade late. (I was active on Reddit before that, it did actually have its moments for someone like me. Now itās completely trash of course as has been noted many times. Still worse than Twitter imo but we are likely approaching shit-singularity there.)

I think this is thread-relevant; why is Ben Dreyfuss's Twitter presence so viscerally annoying? I can't figure it out. His opinions are pretty garden-variety. But there's something about him that makes him 100x more irritating than the average poster and I can't figure out what it is. Or is it just me that's allergic to this guy?

probably best not to link to substacks of hatemongers. quoting or paraphrasing should be enough if it's a worthwhile dunking opportunity
― Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 03:56 (three years ago)
every fourth tweet is an ad now. yesterday i blocked my second ad for devices that set up dominoes so you can knock them over. just now i blocked my second panama hat ad. the other day i had one for sink strainers.
oddly, my second account sees no ads at all.
― koogs, Wednesday, 15 March 2023 08:57 (three years ago)
Yeah I dont ever see ads on Twitter? Is it because I never use it/only have 50 follows? Is it my Adblock? idgi.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 09:12 (three years ago)
I use it heaps and never see ads. Whenever I saw them in the past I would always block them on principle.
― Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 11:23 (three years ago)
no doubt this is weak-minded of me but i don't really consider "this account doesn't exist" as any kind of per se admission on singal's part, let alone a defeat or whatever: lots of ppl switch off their accounts for a while when they want or need to take a pause when the Discourseā¢ļø gets too intense or distracting
(i mean he's bad and wrong and he *should* very much log off and shut up on this issue -- does he even write abt other issues now? -- but that is not yet what this is)

yes, using twitter via a browser with an adblocker keeps them from showing up and is now the only tolerable way to use it
