API issue seems to be resolved, for now anyway. Who knows what's next? It's providing an added dose of daily chaos in our lives, it's good, it makes us adaptable. Elon doesn't want us to get stuck in our ruts, gotta shake things up.

there's this meme that twitter doesn't have a dev environment but ... it does. it's pretty easy to catch this class of configuration bug because all twitter employees on the internal network get the dev environment when they visit twitter.com. i'm guessing part of the the problem now is there are so few users outside pacific time, so they make a change in the middle of the night, don't get any complaints because there are no internal users in like tokyo or singapore any more, and think that means it's good to ship.

My ‘For you’ feed is now just showing random accounts. There’s no indication of how they relate to anyone I follow. That’s entirely new since yesterday.

(Not like it’s all Elmo and catturd, it does seem vaguely relevant to my interests.)

so a week ago i applied for reinstatement using the guidance that other twitterer upthread suggested (saying "the libs tried to censor me!") and today they unbanned me.

hilariously, since it restored all of my previous tweets (from 2021 and earlier), it flagged one of my 2 year old tweets as offensive (which is the one that got me banned in the first place) and temp banned me for it...again.

I don't think I even have a 'for you' feed on my app? It's just 'Latest' or 'top tweets'. But I swear tweets are showing from people I've never followed, and not as 'promoted' or anything either.

yep, I just started seeing a bunch of tweets popping up on both tabs from folks that I don't follow, aren't being retweeted or even liked by anyone I follow and aren't promoted (at least they aren't being tagged that way). not exclusively, but the vast majority are crypto related or accounts pushing OnlyFans content. cool app.

i can only assume foxeseveryhour has some dirt on Elon himself given how much prominence they have on my feed atm

Yeah I was trying to use the mute button even more liberally than before their latest downgrade but it’s just pointless, now I’ve given up on “For You” completely.

(I don’t use the app anymore, deleted it a while back likely based on recommendation from this thread.)

Always be blocking anyone who's annoying, stupid or both.

i only use twitter on desktop browser now since they have ruined the mobile web interface in an attempt to force people into the app (where you can't block ads)

Milo Z otm. Or anyone who’s just is too verbose tbh. Guess that qualifies as ‘annoying’ but it’s more just about awareness of social media etiquette imo. (Akm I don’t find the mobile site much worse than the desktop, I don’t really see any ads, have them all blocked.)

The net effect of me completely abandoning ‘For You’ recommendations is that I drill down even deeper into my well of politics because political media accounts post the most consistently (and professionally really), and it’s basically the only thriving media ecosystem left on Twitter.

And I probably would never really have been active on Twitter but for its role in the London pirate radio scene, probably fifteen years ago — and of course when I finally jumped onboard the site I was a decade late.

(I was active on Reddit before that, it did actually have its moments for someone like me. Now it’s completely trash of course as has been noted many times. Still worse than Twitter imo but we are likely approaching shit-singularity there.)

I think this is thread-relevant; why is Ben Dreyfuss's Twitter presence so viscerally annoying? I can't figure it out. His opinions are pretty garden-variety. But there's something about him that makes him 100x more irritating than the average poster and I can't figure out what it is. Or is it just me that's allergic to this guy?

every fourth tweet is an ad now. yesterday i blocked my second ad for devices that set up dominoes so you can knock them over. just now i blocked my second panama hat ad. the other day i had one for sink strainers.

oddly, my second account sees no ads at all.
