Robinson in Space is sort of glumly magical ... and REAL. great stuff

I keep watching this trio of Patrick Keiller docs: Robinson in Ruins/in Space and London (Ruins narrated by Vanessa Redgrave). I still have little idea who Robinson was, but I like him a lot.

he was imprisoned for some reason I didn't pick up on in the docs and he believed he could look into the future by looking hard at the "molecular basis of historical events" in the locations they occurred or something like that. He was obv a fantastic bloke!

Those films are so great. Not sure I've ever actually seen Robinson in Space, having said that. The novel by Chris Petit is really good too.

I've made that sound like they're intentionally related when the relationship is more, uh, tangential but the echoes are there.

Pretty happy with MUBI GO these days.

Azor was my favorite 2021 movie. Even thinking about it now is giving me a bit of the creeps.

yes there are parts of that movie that evoke a rare sense of dread, it's top notch

it's sort of like The Third Man in its plot structure, but no snappy dialogue or safe characters and more like a mundane nightmare where you you sense there is a murky undercurrent of bad shit happening way scarier than the obvious ordinary everyday evil you see glimpses of and try to normalise.

Indeed to all the above -- a remarkable and unsettling film.

Is it just me or is MUBI not updating with a new movie everyday anymore?

yes, they sent a circular to me via email a couple weeks ago suggesting there wouldn't be a daily movie anymore. not sure if that's impacted the number of overall films added, I've not really been super active on it recently

just came to ask about that. I really preferred the old structure - gave you a reason to check in every day plus provided some impetus to watch things which were due to drop off (and presumably helped them license some films - on a short term basis - they may otherwise struggle to.)

THE SWEET EAST is intense.

Had a snafu with MUBI GO last week but this week it seems to have worked fine mostly, although they QR reading is broken so they have to type in the code manually.

Anyway, saw THE PROMISED LAND/BASTARDEN at the Angelika yesterday and it lived up to its billing.

i really enjoyed Topology of Sirens - kind of Reichardt-y (very similar color palette and pace to Showing Up, but without the emotional core or character development), lots of experimental music (Sarah Davachi and Matchess act and perform in the movie), sometimes has the vibes of those videos where people play their expensive synthesizers in a very curated room with lots of plants, but it's also a mystery.

some of that reads like a backhanded compliment but it really was a pleasant way to spend an hour and a half - it looks really nice and has good music and sounds

I quite loved it (and hated it simultaneously)

Because it never got even a cursory release here, I'm going to count it as a 2024 film (the NYT didn't review it until March).

The final extended sequence is ok - but overall this film really tested the limits of my patience, and I could never sit through it again.

Oh, it's definitely a "great, wonderful, timely, important, masterpiece" movie I won't ever see again, probably
