non-joking request to ban Twitter / X embeds. just have it be a url
― budo jeru, Monday, 31 July 2023 20:41 (two years ago)
pretty sure you can shut that off in preferences
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 31 July 2023 20:46 (two years ago)
it's all or nothing, that shuts off images as well

"Show Images (and other embedded media, like videos and Tweets)"
it's the sacrifice you make i guess
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 31 July 2023 20:52 (two years ago)
It would be cool if that preference could be separated.
― beard papa, Monday, 31 July 2023 21:49 (two years ago)
actually you should try it, i made that choice awhile back and now it’s nice, unlike the rest of the internet i get to read a conversation without letting dumb reaction memes drive my understanding of it
― the late great, Monday, 31 July 2023 23:38 (two years ago)
people post reaction memes here?
― budo jeru, Monday, 31 July 2023 23:41 (two years ago)
I opted for images, videos & tweets to load as links years ago. I can easily just load the exact item I want to view without constantly loading/reloading a couple dozen images, gifs, etc. that were part of a conversation from days, months or years earlier. Just seems like a cleaner solution overall.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 31 July 2023 23:55 (two years ago)
cleanliness while maintaining density of useful info is imo the one virtue this place has in spades that entirerest of internet really does not (wikipedia may be only real exception that is not some real specific niche thing)

hi, can we please talk about having a twitter-specific toggle?
― budo jeru, Monday, 18 September 2023 15:33 (two years ago)
Yeah while you’re at it if zing had the option to hide certain threads that would be great
― ydkb (gyac), Monday, 18 September 2023 16:36 (two years ago)
xp would be good if people could c&p the text of the tweet if it's worth reading, Twitter is so shite now I don't want to go and open it up
― kinder, Monday, 18 September 2023 20:30 (two years ago)
Yeah, kind of surprised it's still the only embedded social network here, and that so many are still reading and linking from it. I would hit the embeds if it were an option.
― beard papa, Monday, 18 September 2023 21:02 (two years ago)
the ilx search function seems to exclude some list of certain common words. I've had this realization a number of times, but for a concrete example, I just went to search for threads about the band Was (Not Was) and received no results. But when I did a site-specific search on google - "Was (Not Was)" site:ilxor.com - there were a few threads. Is there anyway to circumvent this problem and just search for the exact search string that I enter?
― peace, man, Thursday, 28 September 2023 14:07 (two years ago)
you can put quotes in the ilx search box but make sure your computer is using real quotes and not “smart quotes” that break it
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 28 September 2023 14:09 (two years ago)
Interesting! I'll give that a shot.
― peace, man, Thursday, 28 September 2023 14:17 (two years ago)

what’s the downside? for those of us with images off it saves having to click through to the site/app. I don’t think people are just going to stop posting links to twitter all of the sudden
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 11 October 2023 11:50 (two years ago)
the links are already useless, because Twitter only lets you see the tweet itself and not any of the replies or part 2's, unless you're logged in. and if i never had a Twitter account before I'm certainly not signing up now. so ILX might as well just display that tweet as quoted text with the account name in bold or something, imo.
― not the one who's tryin' to dub your anime (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 12:03 (two years ago)
that’s basically what the embeds are like with images off!
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 11 October 2023 15:08 (two years ago)
Also: if the original tweet is deleted or edited, we have a copy of it at the time it was posted here - which is useful in all sorts of ways. This is the only reason I keep it around tbh: The rate things are going, tweets here will outlast X the service itself.
― stet, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 21:13 (two years ago)
fair point!
also, counting the days til Musk discovers this and decides this means ILX is "scraping the data" or some other such BS
― not the one who's tryin' to dub your anime (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 21:56 (two years ago)
it’s the same thing a zillion news sites use and draws traffic to the site. he will inevitably try to pull money from that eventually and further hasten the death spiral
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 12 October 2023 02:41 (two years ago)

Not sure why people feel it's ok to post links to articles which are behind paywalls, it's 100 times more annoying than embedded tweets imo.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 4 November 2023 11:42 (two years ago)
Most paywalled articles can be viewed for free by putting the URL into archive.ph, people should post those instead imo.
― lord of the rongs (anagram), Saturday, 4 November 2023 12:05 (two years ago)
Yeah, or just c&p the relevant section or w/e - if you want people to read something it's just a basic consideration.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 4 November 2023 12:07 (two years ago)
Alternately, install the Bypass Paywalls Clean extension for Firefox https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean
― Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 4 November 2023 12:13 (two years ago)
it shouldn't be up to the people reading it to go to this sort of bother. I mostly read ilx via the android app anyway, so wouldn't work for me.

I like to pay for words. Both because I think that is a good thing to do (word-writing is work that should be compensated), and because I am a word-writer myself (who likes to feed his family).
But I also like to give words away, because I think that is a good thing to do. So if anyone wants a gift link to anything on WaPo, NYT, the Atlantic, or the New Yorker (and I think NYMag as well), hit me up.

I've been dying for years for a way to unfollow a thread I accidentally clicked into. I use the unfilled dot as an easy way to see what threads have unread posts, but I don't want to bookmark them because I also don't like having a long list of them at the top of the page.

Load 100 previous messages option. I noticed that the Saturday Night Live thread had got loads of new posts, but missed the initial posts which revived it, so had to open all 9000+ posts to see what kicked off the discussion.

― m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 13:12 (two years ago)

― Colonel Poo, Friday, 15 March 2024 13:26 (two years ago)
This kind of already exists. If you click a post you can increment the URL to get earlier posts.
Step 1: Click the "link" tag at the end of a post.Step 2: the URL of this new page will contain something in the middle that says "bookmarkedmessageid=8701535" (but the number will be different.)Step 3: Decrease that number a little bit and you get the thread loaded from an earlier point. Usually 1000 or is a good number (so in this case you would change the number to 8700535).
