A clearer photo of Kitara, but there's so much deep-fakery these days, this could've been made by a 14 year old for all we know

In an interview with CNN, Rochards said that it’s Santos in the pictures, adding that she knew him from LGBTQ events he attended in the town of Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro, where she said he was well known in the gay community.

Rochards said she recognized Santos from a recent news report and dug up the old pictures but was surprised to learn that Santos was a Republican.

“I don’t know him now, I only knew him then,” she said.

I once worked with a guy who was a pathological liar. Everyone knew it, but didn't really care because he was sort of childlike and his lies were of the variety of "I ran into Kanye West and he gave me a tape of his new album but then this guy dressed as Spiderman stole it from me on the bus."

reminds me of when MTG was first elected and it was discovered she had a "sex guru" who was tracked down and interviewed and one of the things he said was "I thought I knew her pretty well, she was not like this at all". Madison Cawthorn has maybe a similar story. I know a lot of people were worried that we were gonna wind up with a lot of Trump-like figures in politics post 2016 but I think the reality is we're getting a bunch of Omarosas

There was a good article in the Atlantic about how all of these reactionary movements around the world (the author focused on Poland, but it was applicable to most of them) are really giving an opportunity for revenge to the utter mediocrities of the world.

I actually know very little about Santos' politics, the myth has greatly overshadowed any policy leanings.. is he trumpy?

I think Santos is a perfect culmination of the Trump years, specifically w/r/t how the US blithely assumed "checks and balances" would protect us from bad-faith actors but, it turned out, were often useless because it didn't account for a group in power becoming craven evil-doers--I assume due to some naïve belief in the American people not electing such folks, or something. ("The system will regulate itself.")

Despite Santo being entirely fictional, he's sitting there in Congress, with no consequences beyond embarrassment, because the only check involves getting his fellow craven evil-doers to voluntarily give up a bit of power by expelling him.

blatherskite, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 21:14 (three years ago)

naïve belief in the American people not electing such folks, or something

Reading backwards, recently, I realize I had something like this naïve belief circa 2015.

It's not that I believed the American people to be good (in a moral sense) or serious (in an intellectual sense). Nor was it that I believed institutions and norms would save us. After all, I sit (and type) on Virginian soil that has soaked up plenty of blood from 400+ years of fundamental disagreements about institutions and norms.

It's more that I underestimated humans' capacity to have adolescent nihilism last into adulthood.

The old right wing was cravenly evil, but at least it wore the trappings of an ideological foundation. It made claims to a higher purpose, albeit misguided and disingenuous.

This new stuff (Trump, Boebert, MTG, Santos, Crenshaw, Gaetz, Hawley) is just a middle finger in the air. Owning the libs uber alles.

I go back and forth about this, and was thinking about it recently after reading a recent Nixon biography. Was it preferable when right-wingers presented themselves like respectable politicians who paid lip service to things like civil rights or tolerating dissent by keeping their hatred coded, even when we knew they were bullshitting? Or is it "better" that the mask is off and there's no pretense about being anything aside from what they are, i.e., hateful shitheads?

It was definitely preferable when they kept their hatred coded. The rise in hate crimes against all kinds of marginalized people is proof that letting it out of the bag has been downright awful.

Not really sure what your point is there, unperson— I, too, know the history of lynchings and racism in the US, and it is pretty demonstrable that those times never ended, but certainly became less absolutely pervasive when vocal, outspoken racism was considered uncouth at best and career-ending at worse for politicians. In recent years, it’s become normalized in ways that it hasn’t been for years, and you can see the results of that normalization of discourse.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 25 January 2023 03:28 (three years ago)

xxxpost yeah, there was this naive belief not even that long ago that racists would wear the label as a badge of honor, and anybody who couched their hate in dog whistles and coded language in an attempt to shift the center of the debate (see: "argument to moderation" fallacy) to greater normalize what kind of hate is acceptable...was a small minority. which is why lots of well-meaning but hella naive people thought this shit was a thing of the past.

we saw troubling signs before Trump of people who were starting to feel a wee bit more comfortable saying things that would not have flown a decade earlier and not receive the same level of punishment that would normally be meted out. You had the New Hampshire Police Commissioner proudly call Obama the n-word and press actually gave this piece of shit way too much attention beyond the "old white racist cop is racist, house should be set on fire, back to sports and weather" treatment it deserved. The Bundys militantly usurping land that wasn't theirs, obtaining a platform to say horribly racist shit that got national press coverage, and also desecrate Native American land, and having this seen as a valid, harmless 'first Amendment protest' by the jury. Geraldo Rivera stated that Trayvon Martin was wearing "thug wear" (a fucking HOODIE) and that was why he got shot, and nothing material happened to his career.

all this shit bubbling up and then these assholes miraculously get an Islamophobic, white supremacist President, and finally make them feel comfortable saying how they really felt and jut amplify the targets on people's back. idk that this wouldn't have happened years later if Trump hadn't gotten elected, but lord did he accelerate it.

even David Duke couldn't have done for racism what Trump managed in office.

this is like when you're pumping gas and you want the meter to land on exactly $40... he just ordered very carefully.

The vast majority of congressional campaigns never recorded a single disbursement of $199, just below the level requiring preservation of receipts.

Santos reported 40 of them... Those included eight charges of exactly $199.99 at an Italian restaurant in Queens and another $199.99 charge at a Miami-area hotel where rooms do not usually go for less than $600 per night

In fact, his campaign accounted for roughly half of all expenses by all campaigns that cost exactly $199.99 — a statistical improbability.

Here in DC there are lots of spaces that are just close enough to the Capitol to be convenient, but just far enough away to be legal for fundraising. Occasionally for work, I see requirements for government contractors to have X amount of office space within Y miles of a given customer.

If I were a wealthy and/or smart person, I would rent as many of these spaces as I could afford to, and sublease them to needful entities.

I would also open a restaurant that was really good at charging precise amounts to stay under campaign finance limits.

See above for why I am not a wealthy person

It comes full circle to the thread title:

In video shared by TMZ on Wednesday, Boebert argued with bouncer Vish Burra about some people in her party being denied entry to the ex-con, ex-New York congressman’s “Santos Claus” D.C. bash.

“First of all, we’re on the list,” Boebert pleaded.

“I know you’re on the list, Lauren,” Burra replied.

Checking his clipboard, the doorman said of another of Boebert’s companions, “I know Beth is on the list.”

The others were left out in the cold, Burra told TMZ.

Burra, who was Santos’ director of operations during his time in Congress, shared a clip of the exchange on X and wrote:

“Being the bouncer for the Santos Claus 2025 Christmas Party is not for the faint of heart, but all of you must understand: THE QUEEN SANTOS GETS WHAT SHE WANTS, AND SHE ONLY WANTED HANDPICKED PEOPLE ON THE LIST!”

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jun/03/george-santos-investigation-prediction-market-kalshi-report

Santos allegedly placed a bet on Kalshi, a popular online prediction market, over whether he would be in attendance at Trump’s State of the Union address in February, according to NPR, which first reported on the investigation citing anonymous sources.

Santos had shared his intention to be at the event on social media, before telling his followers that travel woes had nixed the plan.

Asked by NPR whether he had a Kalshi account, Santos said: “I’m not saying yes. I’m not saying no.”

funniest part of all this is that Santos is apparently a spokesman for Polymarket...though I'm guessing he's getting fired very soon

As we were talking, I asked if I could record the call. He said no. I was in front of a keyboard, though, furiously jotting down every word.

I asked him who his lawyers are, and he refused to answer. I questioned whether he really does have attorneys. He replied: "I'm George f*cking Santos, of course I have a legal team."

He then proceeded to name-call and attack the reputation of NPR, the kind of invective that's common when reporting on people who try to discredit reporters and news organizations for stories they don't like.

What Santos said next took me aback, even by his outlandish and brazen standards.

"This story is going to get you a gun in your face," Santos said.

I asked him what he meant by that.

"You know what I mean."
