I’m not twitter person- like i didn’t really know about tweetdeck 3p apps and shit, but i’m still surprised there isn’t some kind of alt medium better than mastodon or whatev. is that like just not gonna happen or ?

its hard to get people to switch it might even be impossible what you need is something that people want to use on its own merits not because its a replacement, you start with a small group of early users having fun fucking around developing the language of the app so to speak and eventually more people are attracted to that situation, also all the attempted twitter replacements have exactly the wrong idea theyre trying to make an elevated serious nice twitter but whats good about twitter is that its funny messy weird etc

prob more likely that twitter dies on its own than having its users stolen by a replacement

I wondered about tweetdeck cos they are/were used by a lot of company accounts? But they say it’s affected them too:

If I'm being real, I'm starting to feel like TweetDeck's days are counted because like 3rd party clients it doesn't bring any (ad) revenue.

If it happens I expect it to be done in a cowardly manner, without any warning because that's how Twitter does things now I suppose.

it’s a diff project called “Better Tweetdeck” and the original dev sold Tweetdeck to twitter in 2011 or thereabouts

It seems tweetbot switched their API keys and it worked for a hot second, but now gone again.

Gotta say 'following' is the site at the best it's ever been. It's just what the 300 or so accounts I follow post/like/retweet. There is less of Musk or any other crap than I've seen since he took over. Surely it won't last but I am enjoying it. Take out the ads and it would've been close to perfect.

I don't spent as much time on the app as I used to either.

I'm a very, very light user of Twitter (I've barely posted anything since 2019), but I don't think I know what ppl mean by ads? I don't think I ever see any? Nothing in my "Following" feed that is being pushed at me as far as I can tell.

there was a decent article on the history of twitter apps but the short version is:
twitter predates apps, the following-only chronological timeline was the former default, several iOS apps popped up (Twitterific first iirc?) and twitter only had an official app after they bought Tweetie in 2010.

I think algorithmic scroll was added around the same time period, although I think it was later. The official app got it, other apps maintained the following/chronological view.

Note that @mentions, retweets, referring to posts as “tweets,” and a handful of other things were all adopted from the community and rolled into the site as features over several years

Even without a third-party app, you could always avoid the algorithmic timeline in the Twitter app by tapping the little sparkly icon at the top to switch to Latest.

oh, and my twitter “hack” of the day: if you go to the site on iOS and do the “add to home screen” action so you get it as a faux-app, it appears to keep you stuck on whichever timeline you pick and probably phones home less than the native app

I think if you hadn't logged on in a while it would automatically switch you back to Home (algorithmic), but I never had that problem.

Yes it generally stuck to latest for me, however there were times when even that would include recommended tweets that I did not follow.
