I have this theory that The Beatles sing the word "nonpareil" with a weird accent in their version of "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey" but I stand kind of alone with this theory. Maybe someone else even presented it to me long ago, but they are not around to comment.

Washington TimesWashington Examiner
― Rabbity Gainsborough (Leee), Thursday, 26 January 2023 20:41 (three years ago)
Interesting! Started as very different publications and somehow converged into the same space.
For a while I _almost_ respected the Washington Times, because it understood the assignment: a moderately right wing counterpoint to the (allegedly) left leaning Post. It kept getting weirder as the Moonie influence intensified, but no one cared. When they stopped trying to compete in the print space, it just spiraled off into the conservaspace.
The Examiner, at first, had a goal of occupying the quick-read tabloid commuter market. In print, it competed with the _Express_. (Disclosure: my beloved wife worked for the Examiner when it was still kinda legit. Then it followed the same weird trajectory into the dextrosphere and was never seen again by normal humans.)
The moral of both stories is that for the last 20 years, ad-supported print journalism was just barely sustainable outside a few legacy institutions. As long as the ostensible "left" flank was held by a duopoly (WaPo/NYT), there was no room for a center or enter-left publication. Hence, both the Times and Examiner knew where to go: the loony conservative fringe.
