the craziest one for me is how "based" a term popularized by the very weird and super not right wing rapper lil b has been adopted by nazi shitposters, just awful stuff

i'm guessing that 2000 figure came from the thread just before the one xyz posted earlier:
Twitter Blue round 2: I’m travelling and haven’t looked at this in detail yet, but my tracker has taken 66 million profile snapshots of 18 million distinct accounts since Monday’s relaunch, and it’s found a grand total of 2,215 new sign-ups.— Travis Brown (20-30% parody) (@travisbrown) December 16, 2022
if so, that number comes from a guy who looked at 18 million of the approximately 300-400 million active monthly accounts, and who is also traveling
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:21 (one year ago) link
the thing to keep in mind is that traveling stats are notoriously noisy
― lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link
but yeah, assuming that when he's traveling and he looks at the details, 2,215 out of 18 million is close to the correct ratio for Blue signups, that would still come out to just about 50,000 signups out of 400M active monthly accounts
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link
twitter by its own admission only had ~238 million mdau (active monetizable accounts) before it went private, so the number is probably much less (see the math i did upthread)
― 龜, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:28 (one year ago) link
considering all the features are "coming soon" and everyone who buys the blue check gets made fun of not sure why anyone would even want it, might have some utility to scammers but idk even about that anyone who knows what a blue check is has probably heard you can buy one at this point

tho im not sure how hes checking for subscribers, supposedly twitters manually verifying identities before handing out blue checks, could be theres a backlog and he cant see them til after that
― lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:31 (one year ago) link
Of those 238 million monetizable accounts only about 10% are in the Goldilocks zone

the discourse (here and everywhere) is gonna need a few years to recover from twitter poisoning. surely some other gestalt posting style will scum to the top in time to supplant fully incomprehensible acronyms spiced with crypto jargon and scoffingly knowing nu-i-can-haz-cheezburger nihilism; i'm hoping for heiroglyphics.

re: AAVE and ballroom culture, this debate has been had for years— “If Madonna Calls” and any number of other rejoinders to those appropriating ballroom and Black nightlife terminology have been occurring for decades. What many of these debates miss is that language is like food— intimate, mutable, borderless in its appeal. Simply using a term from a culture that is not your own doesn’t make you a colonizer or a racist, it makes you a human being. It’s how the term is used and whether there’s some knowledge of and respect for where it comes from that matters, I think.I say this as someone who has seen multiple infographics and threads about this issue claiming that terms which are over 100 years old are somehow “property” of a certain cultural milieu that arose in the past decade or three. Sorry, no!

My complaint with "my brother in Christ" online meme language (whether derived from different cultures/subcultures or simply being very online) is that it rapidly starts to feel algorithmic rather than like authentic human communication - "this is what I say to get more likes on my tweets/posts."

― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Saturday, 17 December 2022 02:56 (one year ago) link
yeah appropriation is fraught because it happens lots of ways. There are objectionable and actively harmful forms of it. But a lot of culture is not one-way, it's an exchange of ideas. So some level of appropriation or absorption is just kind of inevitable especially in a diverse population. Those of us who like living in cities partly like them because of the cultural intersections that happen there, it's interesting when different ideas and experiences come together. There are also power imbalances in a lot of those intersections, and you have to be aware of them. So I think appropriation in the bad sense is kind of a know-it-when-you-see-it thing. Iggy Azalea, say.
