I logged in earlier to see what was up and I couldn’t scroll my timeline past 8 hours ago it just didn’t load

i've been pretty checked out of twitter for a few years and i don't have a mastodon account at the moment, but now i'm at least trying to go through people i follow and grab mastodon handles for anyone that might be hard to find if twitter goes down/their accounts get banned.

lol, also, if i follow a link to someone's mastodon twitter has been throwing up a "Warning: this link may be unsafe"

this site seems so dead right now. I follow a number of bot accounts like "Good Faces" or "hourly Nancy comics" or "random King of the Hill frames" and I swear it's like half my TL right now because so many people have just stopped posting. the site itself is buggy, all the ads I'm getting are strange, I'm getting a ton of crypto scams in my DMs and replies, and the only thing people are really talking about is Elon ruining Twitter. can't see it ever getting back to the point where it was merely dying slowly

so before elon takeover, twitter claimed it had 238 million MDAU, which means maybe 26,000 people have signed up? so, that's like $2.5 million a year in total revenue at $8 a month? lol

The old regime at Twitter governed by its own whims and biases and it sure looks like the new regime has the same problem. I oppose it in both cases. And I think those journalists who were reporting on a story of public importance should be reinstated.

Most novel turns of phrase are AAVE and from drag/ballroom culture so I try to avoid most of them bc by the time I hear them they’ve already been busted

if so, that number comes from a guy who looked at 18 million of the approximately 300-400 million active monthly accounts, and who is also traveling

the thing to keep in mind is that traveling stats are notoriously noisy

but yeah, assuming that when he's traveling and he looks at the details, 2,215 out of 18 million is close to the correct ratio for Blue signups, that would still come out to just about 50,000 signups out of 400M active monthly accounts

twitter by its own admission only had ~238 million mdau (active monetizable accounts) before it went private, so the number is probably much less (see the math i did upthread)

considering all the features are "coming soon" and everyone who buys the blue check gets made fun of not sure why anyone would even want it, might have some utility to scammers but idk even about that anyone who knows what a blue check is has probably heard you can buy one at this point

fwiw the one person i followed who paid cancelled immediately (when people started unfollowing/bullying him haha), and his month expired, and he still has the blue check and shows up in searches for people who paid. apparently they didn't implement offboarding lmao.

re: AAVE and ballroom culture, this debate has been had for years— “If Madonna Calls” and any number of other rejoinders to those appropriating ballroom and Black nightlife terminology have been occurring for decades.

What many of these debates miss is that language is like food— intimate, mutable, borderless in its appeal. Simply using a term from a culture that is not your own doesn’t make you a colonizer or a racist, it makes you a human being. It’s how the term is used and whether there’s some knowledge of and respect for where it comes from that matters, I think.

I say this as someone who has seen multiple infographics and threads about this issue claiming that terms which are over 100 years old are somehow “property” of a certain cultural milieu that arose in the past decade or three. Sorry, no!

the first step forward in regards to cultural appropriation is everyone being cool
