i think it's actually yet another hit at taylor lorenz (who i believe helped popularise "stochastic terrorism" when reporting on LoTT)

he's taking her critique of LoTT (viz "stochastic terrorism" blah blah), and making the (implied) joke that if it's was bad to attack lorenz then it must also bad (and hypocritical) to attack taibbi. that's the structure of his sarcasm anyway.

his position on lorenz is basically that it's fine that she gets attacked by his (and tucker's) orcs, she's a public figure working for corporate media. attacking taibbi isn't bad bcz taibbi finds it stressful or terrifying, it's bad bcz it reveals you as partisan against independnent citizen journalism and a lapdog for the corporate media

it doesn't land bcz (a) he's a terrible writer whose tantrums step on his use of humour and (b) bcz it's very obvious he's chucking literally everything at the wall to gain the hunter dickpic scandal more momentum than it seems to be getting

adding: not quite sure why i'm here analysing jokes that aren't working told by someone i think is a vast toxic idiot never not acting in bad faith

But back in high school I thought it might be cool to start a cult, but then I gradually realized that even if it succeeded, you'd just wind up spending all your time hanging out with people who genuinely believed things that you knew to be rank horseshit you made up for money, and that seems super depressing.

starting a cult, becoming a wingnut influencer are things that seem easy because theyre dumb but actually take a certain kind of demented instinct to make work, check out the right wing d list on twitter, guys with 50k followers trying to grind it out with a podcast newsletter etc hoping to quit their day jobs
