My impression of Kimo's was that it was more of a sort of transexual bar or something? But maybe I'm confabulating it with other Polk St. institutions.

I just wish that Hemlock Tavern had opened up under the old-school Giraffe name. That signage rules.

Some I have no interest in but always chuckle at their "risque" names (the Men's Room, the Midnight Sun, Look Daddy's Coming, Moby Dick, etc.)

we used to dance at the gay/lesbian bar quite a bit... it's a better place to go to dance and not be bothered imho. but this was like a dance club in a lot of ways.
i guess my question might be... the bar, is the sole purpose hooking up? or can a person just be getting a drink and being out around people?
kimo's and hemlock i mostly just know for some of the more nutty rock/art shows i've seen. (which ain't sayin too much probably... never did get to see extreme elvis do his thing. nice guy tho.) m.

How do they regulate it? Is there a gay breath test or something?

Yes. Does your breath smell like cock? Then you're in.

I've never felt unwelcome in gaybars/night clubs. Should I be?
The one I've been to most (quite a famous establishment in Brisbane) has mirrors behind all the urinals so everything's on show. Is this common?
― W4LTER, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 07:02 (sixteen years ago) link
I've heard of that one, so probably not.
I'm going to Melbourne's big gay street parade on Sunday. Will take cock breath spray just in case.

There's a gay pub just over the road from my flat. It stays open later than the other places in our area, so my boyfriend and I sometimes pop over for a quick late drink. One of our downstairs neighbours works behind the bar. It's a pub not bar, so it's pretty chilled and not especially hook-uppy. It's much friendlier than the pub opposite it, where they look askance at you if you have all your own teeth.
On Saturday a female friend and I were taken to a transvestite/ transgendered club. That was a hook-up joint, but no one minded us being there, several people asked if we'd consider going again. I've never felt quite so short in my entire life though.
That said I don't consider it a right of mine to be able to prance into any given bar or club - establishments make their own rules, written or unwritten - people generally want to hang out with those who share a roughly similar mind set. It's about decoding the signals the place is sending. Dress code and music policy play as big a part in this as anything else. There are certain gay nights I wouldn't go to as a straight woman and I don't go to other places because I'm not a teenager and others yet again because I don't like sports, don't work in the City, am not a goth etc.

I don't know if this has been covered above as such, but:
Back in the day, my wife would go to gay clubs with friends, as it was one place they wouldn't get hit on by blokes all the time. Of course, they'd bump into other friends and it would be all "you?" "No" "Me neither"...

My best male friend at the moment is gay and most of the rest of my friends are women and I don't feel entirely comfortable around most heteronormative dudes as they roar like a bunch of testosterone-fueled grizzlies over touchdowns and goals on the TV and I like to dance and I like to karaoke. So I hope the gays in the gay bars that I go to don't think my presence is bullshit, because they're some of the few places that I don't feel entirely out of place. If there were more non-scenester hetero nancy boy bars, I would go to those.

my friend & i stumbled into an older dudes' gay bar in prague, it took a little while to even realize it was a gay bar. no dancing or anything, just seemed like regular quiet czech bar.
we sat down w/ our beers, noticed we were being stared at a little bit, then noticed the photographs of naked dudes on the walls.
― mark cl, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 13:30 (fourteen years ago) link
i imagine most people just assumed we were gay, too. we got the stares mostly b/c we were the youngest there by like 20-30 years

xp I went into a bar like that in Portland, except no nude photos. The only clues were the overly friendly bartender with multiple rainbow tattoos and the all-male, mostly paired clientele. We couldn't convince the gay dude in our group that it was a gay bar. He went and asked the bartender and felt kinda sheepish when he came back with an affirmative.

The first time I went to London I went out with a friend of mine who was living there at the time. At the first joint we went into she offered to go to the bar. As I sat there and observed the surroundings, I realized that everyone in the place was female and that there were a lot of really butch looking ladies. By the time she got back we'd both figured it out. "Ladies Night" meant something totally different at that bar then what we were used to.

I had an unfortunate run-in on Halloween night at the gay bar around the corner from my apartment. While waiting for Jesse to show up, I got into a conversation with a guy in his late 30s/early 40s who, it became quickly clear, was quite drunk and lonely. (He had been dancing by himself at his bar stool when I got there.) He asked me if I was "typically straight," and I admitted, "Yes, typically, I am. And I'm in a long-term relationship with a woman right now, so." Of course, that didn't stop him from asking for my number and then later, after I made it clear that I really wasn't interested, from grabbing me and sitting me down on his stool and trying to engage me in some role-playing that involved him as "Jimmy Caan" and me as "Babs" (Funny Lady, I guess?) I tried to laugh it all off, but I guess he took this as me making fun of him, and when he finally left -- by this time, Jesse had shown up -- he narrowed his eyes at me and said, "You breeders make me sick."
