Any team that picks Luke Shaw but not Trent Alexander-Arnold deserves to crash and burn.

shaw was literally england's best player in that game

wasn't like Shaw was actually playing well, he just didn't run around in a panic like the rest of them. he's still Luke Shaw.

ITV just said Kane in that post match seemed happy with the point. Roy Keane glowering in the background like some Krakatoa of unpalatable truths. Never wanted a smash cut to him so much.

Easily one of the worst in the WC
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:04 (three years ago)
luke shaw is really good for england. inability/unwillingness to get foden effectively into the starting eleven is a massive failure of management. if you're good enough to be a vital part of pep's man city starting eleven gonna suggest that you're probably good enough for england. otoh i'm a grealish sceptic and always have been.
― oscar bravo, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:10 (three years ago)
itv crew slurping england team spirit pre match with exception of Keane " let's see if they are as happy in a couple of weeks"loved usa central 3 midfielders.
― oscar bravo, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:12 (three years ago)
also even though he will inevitably give away a pen/goal at some point this wc I am starting to think maguire is worth his spot solely to defend corners

Almost want Wales 0 England 0 now while Iran US also draw so England top the group in deplorable heel fashion.
― nashwan, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:17 (three years ago)
USA midfield 3 are the best thing about the team, wish that Reyna got in earlier
― underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Friday, 25 November 2022 21:18 (three years ago)
US wins against Iran they advance.
But not a given.
England could still crash out too. Wales is kinda rubbish though
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 November 2022 21:19 (three years ago)
Luke Shaw is better than he looks
― Sam Weller, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:19 (three years ago)
Yea Reyna at 70 would have better
It's bullshit they changed the head to head rule - Wales could beat England but not go through at their expense.
― nashwan, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:26 (three years ago)
England aren't playing badly. This game is simply the result of global factors, not least the effects of the pandemic and Putin's illegal war in Ukraine.— Neil Gibbons (@neilgibbons) November 25, 2022

Disappointed with ENG after they had looked good in first match. They didn't seem to get going or have any inspiration.
Maguire is unpopular but played well and looks to have totally justified his place.
Kane drops too deep I think. But why doesn't England really have any other strikers? Rashford is fine but always seems to play as a winger of some kind.
I imagine that if I were supporting USA I'd watch and be impressed and enthused and just regret that they were still only on 2 points and currently 3rd in the group. Though I also expect them to beat IRN.
Foden is talented and plays in a top club team, but by not coming on tonight he has been elevated to the status of greatest ENG player. Soccer fans should avoid the very basic error of elevating whoever's not on the pitch to a sure thing and matchwinner. If Foden had come on he might have been as average as everyone else.
I tend to hope that IRN beat USA and go through, though I quite like USA.

my whole football watching began with the US national team as I'd previously been ambivalent to the sport, which expanded into me supporting my local team and watching Premier League/Euros/Champions League, etc. so I have a soft spot - but as I said upthread, since I started watching, I've never managed to catch a match where the USMNT won in the World Cup (they only win when I'm not watching). so i'm thinking maybe I don't watch Iran? idk...
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 November 2022 23:23 (three years ago)
Disheartening to hear Southgate say " “It was exactly the sort of game I thought it would be". Many fancied teams that went far have laboured through their second game after a vibrant first win (e.g. both Brazil and Germany in 2014...Italy in 2006 perhaps even) but you might as well just be saying 'we knew that to put the effort in to try and win was too risky'. It'll be interesting to see who does win two in a row.
