Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 23 November 2022 20:51 (three years ago)

only 5 minutes!

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 23 November 2022 20:51 (three years ago)

most of Canada's shots have been unlikely from an xg pov. 4 real chances - pen, David when he should have played the square pass, David header ,and the low cross chance just before half time.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 20:52 (three years ago)

letting Belgium have maximum possession with little attempt to pressure them seems like a good strategy with 2 minutes left

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 23 November 2022 20:54 (three years ago)

Can’t imagine Croatia will let Canada play like that, shame they couldn’t get anything tonight.

Qatari authorities have started banning England fans from wearing crusader costumes in stadiums.

The attire, complete with swords and crosses, are offensive due to crusader history of rape, slaughter and occupation of Arab lands.#Qatar #Eng #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/BoL6dnZEjz

I recently saw a rugby fan getting interviewed in the crusader gear and remember thinking it was such a vile phenomenon. I know it's to do with St. George but it's not unlike a German fan dressing up in a Nazi uniform.

Oh wouldn't it be rubbery? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 November 2022 10:23 (three years ago)

These cunts know what they are doing.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 24 November 2022 10:25 (three years ago)

Cameroon should really be one up.

Excellent game so far.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 24 November 2022 10:25 (three years ago)

barton/oatley wondering when they will see a goal, they've had the 0-0s so far, has been decent tho

imago, Thursday, 24 November 2022 10:30 (three years ago)

xp I don't think many of the crusaders cosplayers would be able to grasp why this is different from Danes dressing up as Vikings or whatever, which is a big part of the problem

calzino, Thursday, 24 November 2022 11:09 (three years ago)

Had a feeling the Swiss would score. Cameroon squandered a couple of chances in the 1st half.

god help me I kinda love this year's edition of xhaka. some of his simple passes to break the lines are lovely

The guy who was born in Cameroon scores against Cameroon.

Colonialism is wicked.

Were Vikings historically good?

Mixed reports over time but some of them surely killed a lot of people and pillaged many territories. Unsure whether they actually colonised places or were more restless than that.

Probably reasonable to say that a Viking costume could potentially be offensive, if such things offend you.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 November 2022 13:27 (three years ago)

Orlando City star Facundo Torres on the bench for Uruguay. Be nice if he plays.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 November 2022 13:28 (three years ago)

Fuck. South Korea should've gone ahead..

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 24 November 2022 13:35 (three years ago)

Uruguay hit the post. Excellent half

The British Isles and Ireland would be a pretty different places if not for Vikings!

Oh wouldn't it be rubbery? (Tom D.), Thursday, 24 November 2022 13:49 (three years ago)

The vikings took all the hot chicks out of ireland and got lost and founded iceland iirc so mixed bag

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 24 November 2022 13:55 (three years ago)

Tom D - agree, big influence (Dublin, York, Newcastle come to mind), just don't know enough about what they did with places that they attacked. Despite having read numerous LRB articles on the subject!

re J-Mod, didn't Eric the Red discover America centuries before Columbus? VINELAND as I recall.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:02 (three years ago)

Maybe a good rule would be: If you are dressing up in a daft costume from your nation's history to support the sporting team -- make it the costume of a non-violent group which never killed or invaded anyone (monks, scholars, perhaps merchants, or indeed peasants, serfs, farmers; also most women in history, except Bodaceia / Boudicca). I don't think this will catch on, though.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:06 (three years ago)

I was more thinking about the image of the crusader being a current - and still potent - symbol of western colonialist oppression in a way that the image of the viking isn't, as far as I'm aware.

Tim, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:10 (three years ago)

was just reading about the eastern Volga Vikings who traded as far as Constantinople and arguably founded Russia (but don't say that in front of Putin)
anyway this is a decent match with two good teams

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:10 (three years ago)

scholars and merchants are some of the most violent people in history! xps

your original display name is still visible (Left), Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:17 (three years ago)

vikings are definitely symbols of whiteness and fascism these days even though neither of those things existed when they were around

Im being glib xp

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:22 (three years ago)

I maintain that there's a palpable difference between dressing as a viking and dressing as a crusader when in the middle east

Tim, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:23 (three years ago)

Merchants can reasonably be accused of exporting and practising forms of exploitation.

Scholars - no, I don't see it, not by comparison with other professions.

Even if it is supposed that scholars have supported and legitimated oppression (some have, some haven't), it is rare for them to be physically violent.

That cannot be said of Crusader knights or Viking warriors.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:26 (three years ago)

Tim - FWIW - I think your argument must be something like:

People dressed as Vikings can go to places where Vikings committed violence, colonialism and pillage, and it will be "laughed off" because those places (eg: Dublin - unsure where else) are quite prosperous and peaceful and can "look back and laugh" at the Viking violence as irrelevant.

By contrast, people dressed as Crusaders go to the Middle East, and it cannot be "laughed off" because nations in the Middle East remain wracked by violence, neo-colonialism, legacies of colonialism, exploitation, racism, etc -- thus, the legacy of what the Crusaders are doing is still present.

I think this makes sense.

However, my caveat would be that this might vary between places in the Middle east (a region I do not visit). In Iraq, plainly, neo-colonial violence remains recent and present. In Iran, a nation embattled by Western sanctions, perhaps a similar tension would exist. On the other hand - Qatar? Is this a different case, which is basically a small oil-rich nation that has made harmonious terms with the West? So the narrative of violence might no longer be viewed as one to complain about.

Unsure. I know nothing about Qatar except this World Cup and will never go there.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 November 2022 14:41 (three years ago)

you can tell this game's shit lol

Uruguay hit the post late on..
