Closure of Twitter Brussels office prompts online safety fears

Twitter has disbanded its entire Brussels office, sparking concerns among EU officials about whether the social media platform will abide by the bloc’s stringent new rules on policing online content.

Julia Mozer and Dario La Nasa, who were in charge of Twitter’s digital policy in Europe, left the company last week, according to five people with knowledge of the departures.

The executives had led the company’s effort to comply with the EU’s disinformation code and the bloc’s landmark Digital Services Act, which came into force last week and sets new rules on how Big Tech should keep users safe online.

Other Twitter executives in the small but vital Brussels office, seen as a crucial conduit to European policymakers, had left at the start of the month during company-wide cuts that removed around half of its 7,500-strong workforce.

Mozer and La Nasa survived the initial cull, but no longer work there after the company’s new owner Elon Musk issued an ultimatum last week for staff to commit to a “hardcore working culture”. It is unclear whether the pair resigned or were made redundant.

Mozer and La Nasa declined to comment. Twitter did not respond to requests for comment.

ML engineers are not originally a type of job that commits so much code, and if you become a tech lead in the company culture before the acquisition, you tend to be full of planning and meetings. There is also a rumor that it simply looks at the number of committed lines of code, so if that's the case, I don't think so

I just noticed that I have a Verified notifications tab now, despite not having a verified account.

The recommended/trending section is useless as ever but now if I tell it something is spammy or uninteresting (“Fang Fang” specifically) it doesn’t go away.

this is low-grade on the scale of things to fear or be annoyed at but my (very intermittent) email alerts for tweets now entirely consist of
(a) my OWN TWEETS (very bad, do not read) and
(b) those of a publisher i tried without success to get hold of on twitter to send me a review copy (in the end i bought my own copy)

The algorithm must have changed because last week I posted an innocuous response tweet that ended up getting more likes than I’ve ever gotten before. This is not a humblebrag, I’m saying my tweet was completely stupid and yet outperformed any tweet of mine in 10 years. And then today, kind of the opposite, where someone replying to me with a perfectly boring tweet has so far gotten over 10 likes.

It's pretty hilarious that they keep hemming about free speech when the bots they have that suspend people are clearly still operating.

I got a week timeout for telling a MAGA politician that I hoped they died in a car accident.

It's really just the human modding that's slowed down

if they made it a "free speech" platform it would be useless to advertisers, which is where they get their revenue. this was always the flaw in elon's masterplan.
