On the evidence of this game England don't have much to worry about.

fitting that the US match starting to now resemble American Football

USA much worse than I was led to believe

they were better in the first half
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 November 2022 20:58 (three years ago)
USA have played better overall, but seem to panic & slip up when Wales do anything unexpected, does not bode well for them when they face a decent team.
― link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 21 November 2022 20:58 (three years ago)
Over 10 minutes extra time now. Ludicrous.
― Oh wouldn't it be rubbery? (Tom D.), Monday, 21 November 2022 21:00 (three years ago)
one of the drawbacks of having such a young team, with only one player who has played in WC for the US. don't know how to close out matches.
sigh. I still haven't seen the USMNT win a World Cup match live (every tiime we've won I've missed it in years past). must be a curse.
Iran a must win now, and might come down to goal differential unless US can force a draw or better against England.

Qatar paid a lot of money for this tournament, good to see they've demanded value for it

Players have been warned to prepare for more stoppage time at the end of each half in the World Cup, including time to make up for long goal celebrations.‘Celebrations might last one or one and a half minutes,’ said Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA referees committee. ‘It’s easy to lose three, four or five minutes, and this has to be compensated at the end.’FIFA want to crack down on time-wasting and are also pledging to add time accurately when play stops for VAR interventions, the treatment of injuries, substitutions, penalties and red cards. It will lead to games regularly lasting more than 100 minutes.

Wales are still unbeaten in the group stage of the world cup. 1958 they drew 3, won 1 (then lost 1-0 to Brazil in the knockout stage)

VAR really flung the doors open for referees and former referees to start making significant material changes to how football works. I don’t really care if it’s ‘correct’, it’s fucking boring. These people are the cops of the sport and their power should be curbed.
― crisp, Monday, 21 November 2022 21:36 (three years ago)
(xp) I think attempts making football more like an American sport have been going on for a long time.

if it was an american sport the clock would hit 90:00 (or more likely, 00:00) and a horn would blow and play would be dead, right there. extra time that only the ref can clearly perceive is as non-american as it gets imo.

My assumption is still that injury time is too long now for upsets to happen. Fergie time standardised.
