Replace any for 'most' and that's me.

Sad that Mane is out. I can see Qatar getting out of the group (to face England..). And if not Senegal, hard to see any African team progressing without a major upset.

No real big games in the first week but a few intriguing ones based on novelty (e.g. will Canada just collapse against Belgium or be hard to break down?). Mexico v Poland could be fun if Bobby L turns up.

flashbacks of 2002, waking up at 3am to watch Rivaldo shine...
(agree about the absolute travesty it would be to see Neymar gloat and win this world cup, this imbecil, but... I'm watching it anyway 😢 )

fpsa, Friday, 18 November 2022 14:48 (three years ago)

Charlton's one player at the tournament was Ghana's first choice keeper, unfortunately as we can't have nice things he broke his finger warming up for our last game before he was to leave

imago, Friday, 18 November 2022 14:54 (three years ago)

Four Celtic players there but, curiously. Maeda is going but not Furuhashi or Hatate, both of whom are much better players. Especially Hatate.

Anybody not backing Brazil?

Prospect of France being the first champions to get out of the group for 20 years only to face Argentina again also v tantalising

nashwan, Saturday, 19 November 2022 13:32 (three years ago)

if by "backing" you mean supporting then no, bunch of Bolsonaro-supporting cunts, hope they go out ASAP.

my preference is for the whole thing to be cancelled, however if someone has to win it, I'll be glad if it's England because

* If any world cup "doesn't count" it's this one, so bragging rights would be minimised
* we would never have to hear another new version of Three Lions
* If Rashford, Sancho and Saka can score the winning goals then it will piss off all the right people.

in the VAR age it's harder to get away with anything so it would have to be just a total fuck-it brawl

imago, Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:36 (three years ago)

I passed a Paddy Power ad today on the way into Dublin airport that said “At least Sterling spent more time at 10 than Truss.” I’m indifferent to the fortunes of the English national team but I can guess the discourse.

I don’t think I implied otherwise!

after several days on “the milk,” (gyac), Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:37 (three years ago)

by that I mean players are generally better at not doing things that get them sent off, would guess that red card numbers this and last EPL season are down on the average

THAT SAID this last AFCON was an absolute red card bonanza, every time they went to VAR someone was sent off for some nonsense, so maybe, hopefully that'll be the case here too

oh sorry supercu(n)t, i wondered why cuntathon didn't work with parentheses :/

Burnt Norton 360 (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:40 (three years ago)

Yeah, yeah, 1994 made a particular impression on me because, as I say, I was outside the U.S. to see it. I had never seen that level of universal interest in any sporting event ever. And its coming down to penalties, with a spectacular miss by Baggio, had a similar feel to yesterday's ending.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 19 December 2022 20:06 (three years ago)

as far as the knock out rounds went argentina were the clearly better side in all 4 of their games even though they only 'won' 2 of them whereas france were probably only the better side in one game out of four.

oscar bravo, Monday, 19 December 2022 20:58 (three years ago)

still think 2006 Italy vs Germany is the top standard of what international football should be.
as far as finals go 1982 was very satisfying.
1990 probably the worst final I've seen.

oscar bravo, Monday, 19 December 2022 21:03 (three years ago)

But the match was so so bad, and I speak as a Brazilian, who watched the team get that 1st WC...that was wonderful at the time and I am no complainer though I'd wish it was more exciting. The excitement really came from Bulgaria and Romania in that WC.

Having watched every final since 1990 I'd be say my faves were: 2022, 2010, 2006

2010 was amazing -- though everyone hates that -- as the Dutch were trying to batter the Spanish, and it nearly, nearly worked. It was a contest.

2006 was Zidane headbutt!

2022 is the big winner. Most intense from about 75 mins to the end. Unforgettable extra half hour.

xxp

2006 was great, my second team playing my third team except I wanted Italy to win that time. I really wanted Maldini to get a winners medal. The Germany-Italy last semi with the two super late goals was absolutely classic though.

Yes it has the novelty of being the first final I watched with more than five goals but France were always in control.

nine months pass...

Looking ahead a bit...what:

The 2030 men’s football World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with one match each taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, FIFA announced on Wednesday.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 18:23 (two years ago)

lol play your opening game in south america, your group stage in europe, and a knockout match in africa. v sensible from fifa.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

if you can't create the most irresponsible environmental impact possible is it even really a World Cup?

no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 19:44 (two years ago)

Final match on Ascension Island.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 19:51 (two years ago)

do you ever get the feeling people are just taking the piss nowadays

or something, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 20:31 (two years ago)

Well...I kinda like this. I mean, it is the 100th anniversary so it's kinda alright there are a few matches in South America.

Having matches in Morocco looks to a future (of a burning world).

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 20:52 (two years ago)

Don't see " carbon neutrality" as a big deal. Climate mitigation goes beyond what happens in a month across three countries.

I mean if covering vast distances via air travel is an issue you wouldn't have a WC in the US would you?

it's low down on "things that are wrong with the World Cup" yeah, but it's very FIFA to not even bother paying lip service to it

one month passes...

Some chilling scenes from Brasil-Argentina.

Match delayed due to "riot" in the stands, but police were beating fans with batons. Messi took his team off field

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 00:53 (two years ago)

I recently learned that Argentina did away with away game spectators about two decades ago.

Shifty Henry’s Swing Club (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 01:15 (two years ago)

Absolute joke to play this. 21 minutes, maybe eight minutes of play. Three cards, every foul the ref has to beg the players not to fight

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 01:20 (two years ago)

Brazil struggling in qualification for the first time in a long while but they waited until there are six berths (plus a likely seventh via play-off) to qualify.

nashwan, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:07 (two years ago)

Brazil just never ever struggle in qualifiers. Three straight defeats 😱

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:12 (two years ago)

The match was called very one-sided in Argentina's favor but that ain't why Brazil lost. They had zero ideas. Lots of balls played to prospective runners who never made runs, poorly weighted balls, bad first touches.

Argentina weren't much better, didn't even score until after Messi subbed out

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 16:12 (two years ago)
