Nobody wants the headache of being Twitter at this point probably

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 14 November 2022 16:44 (three years ago)

It costs a lot of money and isn’t profitable

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 14 November 2022 16:44 (three years ago)

i think you could make a nice business out of it if you just focused on the core product, obvs couldnt be a public company since the demand for growth is too much, and couldnt be a vc company since the demand for growth is too much, but it does need to be big to work, so yeah lol

lag∞n, Monday, 14 November 2022 16:46 (three years ago)

Is Kanye still buying that right wing social network? Anyway, Musk should buy all of those, too.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 November 2022 16:47 (three years ago)

i mean im sure on some level musk is right that theres tons of expensive extraneous stuff at twitter but thats the growth mindset baby

lag∞n, Monday, 14 November 2022 16:47 (three years ago)

eh. public TWTR was a good business. insanely inefficient but that was fixable. not by jack or anyone he chose, and it would have been a rough couple of years. but revenue was good.

If they had started charging for features/ad-free/pointless icons like 11 years ago it would’ve worked pretty well imo

Was this posted here yet?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/14/twitter-fake-eli-lilly/

Inside the real Eli Lilly, the fake sparked a panic, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. Company officials scrambled to contact Twitter representatives and demanded they kill the viral spoof, worried it could undermine their brand’s reputation or push false claims about people’s medicine. Twitter, its staffing cut in half, didn’t react for hours.

The aftermath of that $8 spoof offers a potentially costly lesson for Musk, who has long treated Twitter as a playground for bawdy jokes and trolls but now must find a way to operate as a business following his $44 billion takeover.

By Friday morning, Eli Lilly executives had ordered a halt to all Twitter ad campaigns — a potentially serious blow, given that the $330 billion company controls the kind of massive advertising budget that Musk says the company needs to avoid bankruptcy. They also paused their Twitter publishing plan for all corporate accounts around the world.

“For $8, they’re potentially losing out on millions of dollars in ad revenue,” said Amy O’Connor, a former senior communications official at Eli Lilly who now works at a trade association. “What’s the benefit to a company … of staying on Twitter? It’s not worth the risk when patient trust and health are on the line.”

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 November 2022 18:41 (three years ago)

"patient trust and health" would also be benefitted if you stopped charging outrageous amounts for life-saving pharmaceuticals, but yknow, apples and oranges.

I wouldn't be surprised if Google wound up buying what's left of twitter for pennies on the dollar, a year from now. Google never got Buzz off the ground. Google can afford it as well.

akm, Monday, 14 November 2022 20:26 (three years ago)

twitter tried to get google etc. to buy it in like 2015 and none of the companies that could get past their antitrust concerns based on public reporting.

dunno what it's like for all you but the site definitely seems like it's dying, feels like there's half the amount of new tweets as before and most of them are about Elmo. its kinda weird to see people tweeting about normal shit, especially now that the elections are over

quite surprised elon hasn't relented and unbanned trump yet; I suppose that might happen right after he announces he's running

akm, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:11 (three years ago)

he said hes not unbanning anyone until he can set up a council of wise elders, surely not worth much as a promise but its what we have

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:14 (three years ago)

Trump will definitely be back on Twitter soon, it's one of the few explicit promises Musk made and if he doesn't make good on it he'll lose a lot of whatever base of fanboys he has left.

My brother works in tech and he says he's aware of companies that are in negotiations not just with recently fired Twitter employees but with entire teams that are still within the company. Like, there's a chance to pick up an entire quality assurance team that already all knows each other and works well together.

hard to envision Trump even returning to Twitter given he's already got a social media site on which he is the singular center of attention and can never receive any negative attention. in other words it's what Elon wishes he was on Twitter. also by the site may be pretty far into its death spiral by the time he unbans him which I can't imagine will be too attractive to him

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:29 (three years ago)

i dont think trump will be able to resist twitter its his favorite thing

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:33 (three years ago)

hell prob play it off as just reposts from truth social but i mean that guy fuckin loves twitter

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:34 (three years ago)

Yeah. Truth Social is his Tin Machine, but Twitter is his Spiders from Mars.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:36 (three years ago)

truth social just doesnt have the reach, no glory in posting for a handful of losers

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:41 (three years ago)

yeah, when someone posts "Trump said this on Truth Social" it's like hearing he said on a Public Access channel.

“uhh”—like, this is an insane oatmeal raisin cookie “uhh” (President Keyes), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:44 (three years ago)

trump back on twitter is inevitable. especially if/when twitter starts circling the drain, you know elon musk isn't going to be able to avoid the temptation of putting him back on, all the new traffic and reliving the glory days of the angry horrible man screaming via text every couple hours

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 16:05 (three years ago)

oh I'm sure elmo will unban him, but at this point it doesn't even seem clear whether or not Twitter will last until the end of the month

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 16:11 (three years ago)

Best-case scenario is Elon somehow shakes him down for a lot of money to get access again. Which he absolutely should.

Trump fundraising emails start talking about "Help ME get BACK on TWITTER!"

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 16:24 (three years ago)

lmao

12 years ago, Twitter’s office used a Mac Mini to tunnel into the servers. One day, an IT guy found it in the closet.

“Anyone know who owns this?”

“Unplug it. Someone will show up.”

Everyone lost access to servers. Huge crisis. It became known as the “Load Bearing Mac Mini.”

this is why they should let me run it i understand twitter is all about tweets

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 17:14 (three years ago)

Pretty soon it's going to be Elon alone, in a server room, furiously dictating tweets while trying to keep multiple racks up and running like that one scene with Zach Cherry in Severance.

I've seen people literally say "If you post about the world cup I'm cutting you" - I think this is going to be a quiet one (though people will argue about whether that's this world cup or the death of Twitter)

As an engineer at Twitter, I can confirm that Elon Musk doesn’t understand anything about our website, or coding in general. Not gonna lie, we laugh REALLY hard about it behind his back. We’ve been calling him “the CEO,” but it stands for Code Efficiency 0.

I have noticed a lot more timeouts and 500s in the past week or so than I had in the preceding, say, several months. It's already struggling but it's not attracting widespread notice probably because it's a bit subtle and people are used to all software being kind of broken all of the time
