Yeah before I started using twitter more I was just getting angry at Facebook instead.

There are def times when I feel the need to get off twitter for a while or mute everyone who does politics but it is superior to FB in that while both serve me up the thoughts of racist cunts on a daily basis, Facebook provides me no access whatsoever to ppl who think that you should warn someone before masturbating thinking of them or that reading is a sign of privilege. It's just a much more colourful dystopia.

ppl who don't want to get angry at their feeds at all use instagram I believe but boy are things boring on there

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:59 (three years ago)

A lot of people were paralysed into doing nothing out of fear of jeopardising any severance.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 4 November 2022 14:59 (three years ago)

I use FB occasionally, but I game it. I try to cheat the algorithms by not liking anything and not following anyone or anything, so if distant relatives want to tell me someone's ill or has died they can, and if I want to see what a friend's up to I put their name into Search.

Other than that, I use WhatsApp but only with friends. I don't follow any groups with people in them I don't know. And that's it.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:04 (three years ago)

This feels different from the careful curation of Twitter someone mentioned above in that you don't need to do curation. It was more "(un)set it and forget it"

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:06 (three years ago)

i go on twitter to see the bad stuff, amongst other reasons

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:17 (three years ago)

The 'rewards' are interesting takes by people who don't normally have a voice. And yeah you see a reality, a certain insight on people's lives, whether bad or good. I know I'll miss it.

But saying twitter has bought misery on lots of ppl when not many ppl actually tweet and *looks at what actually immiserates people* is just wrong.

Instagram I use for maybe one or two minutes a day (seriously, according to my app usage stats), the user experience is fuck awful due to them getting rid of the chronological timeline. Stories are fine though as an old person I’m not really good at using them…

after several days on “the milk,” (gyac), Friday, 4 November 2022 15:44 (three years ago)

I get most of my news from Twitter tbh, including labor stuff, author stuff, very-online-personality stuff, academics who are also public figures stuff, following electeds that I like, hyper-local politics stuff...there's no other place where all of those things are accessible.

otm re IG, reels made it unusable.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 4 November 2022 15:45 (three years ago)

xp to gyac
someone on ilx recently shared the tip that if you tap the Instagram logo and then pick "Following" you only see posts from people you follow (well, plus ads I think). You have to do it every time, but it might be worth it if you only look once a day

rob, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:48 (three years ago)

yeah i get all my news via twitter great source for links

lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:48 (three years ago)

Such a shame Ed Lee isn't around to see this. Yup.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2022 16:04 (three years ago)

I did see that tip rob, and I have found it useful, but I guess the issue is not that you can change it, but, like so many things, that you keep needing to put stuff back that was never broken in the first place.

insta switched to an awful side-menu view in my browser a few days ago. there is literally a frame with a scroll bar when i look at my notifications. also i can't see the 'following' option when i click the logo anymore.

i followed a bunch of random gays and drag queens because i do my dj promotion on insta. sounds fun in theory but boy does my timeline get monotonous.

I was looking at the Twitter Blue features the other day and it's funny but half of the features are just.. there.. if you use a third-party client and not the official Twitter one (or the website)

I hope Elon doesn't remember that third-party clients exist

i instituted a 5 minutes a day limit on twitter a few months ago, it's been wonderful! it's only once you're off of it that you realize how inane 99% of it is, the hell site

Yeah, I got back on yesterday for the first time in weeks just to enjoy watching it implode and ended up spending half an hour hate-reading people defending Kyrie Irving

If you have a verified account, it's a tab that shows only mentions by other verified accounts. (I know this because I once ran a brand account for work.)

jaymc, Friday, 4 November 2022 19:03 (three years ago)

Twitter taught me that there is a person named Kyrie Irving yesterday, and I'm not sure I needed to know that

Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company.

I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises including Ethiopia,

One reason I finally deleted was forcing myself to face how much time I was spending reading replies from UK-based terf nightmare freaks. I don't know anyone in real life who would express those views and had to recognize that "being aware" of this shit isn't any kind of actual politics

The death of Google Reader is what prompted me to create my twitter account, which I originally just used as a news aggregation service (I have yet to tweet, I guess I should get around to that before it's too late). I really should go back to rss feeds, it was a much healthier way to get my news.

silverfish, Friday, 4 November 2022 19:47 (three years ago)

i created a twitter account purely to talk to rappers, no other reason

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 4 November 2022 19:51 (three years ago)

I tried to use a Google Reader replacement for a while, but never stuck for some reason.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 4 November 2022 19:57 (three years ago)

around the time I'd built enough of a network of people who were sharing articles on google reader and commenting with some good interaction, they killed it

people building a community and interacting by talking about links? who would want that?

1/ There is some pretty substantial context about Twitter's 2023 revenue and advertisers that I think partly help explains why Musk is really losing it...

And it involves upfront ad sales. Let me explain...

Nice threads about what was good about twitter and why the likes of tik tok won't work.

What I like(d) about Twitter, and what I’ll look for from whatever comes next:

I joined Twitter in 08 or 09. The thing that mattered in those early days was that ties were unidirectional (following), not bidirectional (friending).
