So, the people who didn't get fired-- I assume they will also be looking for new jobs. Every time I worked at a place that started threatening layoffs, even if I wasn't under the knife, I started sending off resumes.

xxxp i have to admit that when people say "my personal experience of twitter is benign, you just have to curate your timeline really well" its like i believe you and honor your lived experience, but also for everybody with a well-curated timeline thats just poets and record labels there are 45 nancy pelosi hammer guys out there being slowly driven insane. looking forward to Elon hastening the day when twitter becomes like myspace, a site that still exists but has no remaining users or features

I believe them, I honour their lived experience, but
(i) I don't want to be them(ii) I have no intention of becoming like them(iii) why do *I* have to do the hard work? The point of tech is to make our lives easier, not more difficult, and if the tools won't serve me, I don't want them in my life!

...and if I sound like the classic ex-smoker, chiding folks for what they are still doing to their lungs, then, well, I kinda am. I was a regular user of Twitter, but it got to the point when it was affecting my mental health and before Musk got his grubby little hands on it, I pressed Delete. My life's got much better since. There is a causal link; it's not the only causal link.
― Grandpont Genie, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:45 (three years ago)
One of you people recommended a Chrome extension (tweak new twitter?) which I had totally forgotten that I had installed but which seems to be passively doing the trick.

this is the rational response. the irrational response is thinking that maybe you can acquire and carve off a slice of the territory that remains once there are fewer employees remaining
― mh, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:51 (three years ago)
GG are there social media platforms you like? other than ilx. My objection to your post was that singling out Twitter as immiserating doesn't make sense
― rob, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:51 (three years ago)
Yeah before I started using twitter more I was just getting angry at Facebook instead.
There are def times when I feel the need to get off twitter for a while or mute everyone who does politics but it is superior to FB in that while both serve me up the thoughts of racist cunts on a daily basis, Facebook provides me no access whatsoever to ppl who think that you should warn someone before masturbating thinking of them or that reading is a sign of privilege. It's just a much more colourful dystopia.
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:58 (three years ago)
ppl who don't want to get angry at their feeds at all use instagram I believe but boy are things boring on there
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 4 November 2022 14:59 (three years ago)
A lot of people were paralysed into doing nothing out of fear of jeopardising any severance.
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 4 November 2022 14:59 (three years ago)
I use FB occasionally, but I game it. I try to cheat the algorithms by not liking anything and not following anyone or anything, so if distant relatives want to tell me someone's ill or has died they can, and if I want to see what a friend's up to I put their name into Search.
Other than that, I use WhatsApp but only with friends. I don't follow any groups with people in them I don't know. And that's it.
― Grandpont Genie, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:04 (three years ago)
This feels different from the careful curation of Twitter someone mentioned above in that you don't need to do curation. It was more "(un)set it and forget it"
― Grandpont Genie, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:06 (three years ago)
i go on twitter to see the bad stuff, amongst other reasons
― lag∞n, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:17 (three years ago)
The 'rewards' are interesting takes by people who don't normally have a voice. And yeah you see a reality, a certain insight on people's lives, whether bad or good. I know I'll miss it.
But saying twitter has bought misery on lots of ppl when not many ppl actually tweet and *looks at what actually immiserates people* is just wrong.

I get most of my news from Twitter tbh, including labor stuff, author stuff, very-online-personality stuff, academics who are also public figures stuff, following electeds that I like, hyper-local politics stuff...there's no other place where all of those things are accessible.
otm re IG, reels made it unusable.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 4 November 2022 15:45 (three years ago)
xp to gyacsomeone on ilx recently shared the tip that if you tap the Instagram logo and then pick "Following" you only see posts from people you follow (well, plus ads I think). You have to do it every time, but it might be worth it if you only look once a day
― rob, Friday, 4 November 2022 15:48 (three years ago)
yeah i get all my news via twitter great source for links

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2022 16:04 (three years ago)
I did see that tip rob, and I have found it useful, but I guess the issue is not that you can change it, but, like so many things, that you keep needing to put stuff back that was never broken in the first place.

insta switched to an awful side-menu view in my browser a few days ago. there is literally a frame with a scroll bar when i look at my notifications. also i can't see the 'following' option when i click the logo anymore.
i followed a bunch of random gays and drag queens because i do my dj promotion on insta. sounds fun in theory but boy does my timeline get monotonous.

I was looking at the Twitter Blue features the other day and it's funny but half of the features are just.. there.. if you use a third-party client and not the official Twitter one (or the website)
I hope Elon doesn't remember that third-party clients exist

If you have a verified account, it's a tab that shows only mentions by other verified accounts. (I know this because I once ran a brand account for work.)

The death of Google Reader is what prompted me to create my twitter account, which I originally just used as a news aggregation service (I have yet to tweet, I guess I should get around to that before it's too late). I really should go back to rss feeds, it was a much healthier way to get my news.
― silverfish, Friday, 4 November 2022 19:47 (three years ago)

― link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 4 November 2022 19:57 (three years ago)
around the time I'd built enough of a network of people who were sharing articles on google reader and commenting with some good interaction, they killed it
people building a community and interacting by talking about links? who would want that?
