I want to find that symbol on the building in front of the left hand chimney, looks like a yellow M, near impossible without the 3d. map though.

StanM, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 11:56 (three years ago)

kudos, ledge! was this the longest it ever took to solve one?

I'm happy to report the building in pic 1 can indeed be found in the Tower Block UK database that I've been consulting every time a promising-sounding city was mentioned:

Ah good, glad someone finally got it. What was your path to it, ledge?

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 13:34 (three years ago)

clicking through 14 pages (out of 25) of 368 photos tagged 'church with square tower': https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=168441618&page=14

a proper database of uk churches would have been helpful.

ledge, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 13:43 (three years ago)

Ha wow, all off the first pic we didn't even need the others!

> a proper database of uk churches would have been helpful

i'm pretty sure there is one - i remember reading something about church near home and it was stupidly detailed, like someone had been around and taken notes.

https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1153103?section=official-list-entry

"Anglican parish church. C12, C13, late C14, and C15, restored 1889 and 1931, small mid-late C20 extension. Nave; random limestone. Clerestory; coursed squared and finely dressed limestone and sandstone. South porch and tower; large blocks coursed finely dressed limestone. Artificial stone slate roof to chancel. Leaded roof to nave. Red tile roof to C12 nave with C15 clerestory. Nave south wall; two raking buttresses (possibly added C14). Narrow C12 round-headed window with cable moulding at top. Early studded plank door with strap hinges and later fillets within a pointed casement-moulded surround within porch..."

koogs, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 18:16 (three years ago)

no searching via architectural style or features though (looks like the tower block database doesn't have that either.)

ledge, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 19:34 (three years ago)

ledge, Tuesday, 1 November 2022 21:15 (three years ago)

OMG - someone on Twitter posted a picture of some cobbled street and I googled the shop name in the background to find out where it was and it was only bloody KEIGHLEY, NR BRADFORD! I don't deserve to post on this thread :(

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 09:36 (three years ago)

i officially retire in perpetuity from setting these, it's back to you cherry blossom.

also, how?

ledge, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 09:37 (three years ago)

I didn't guess the city, zelda zonk did, I'd never even heard of it!

I just went to a satellite map of the city and went to where the water was

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 09:38 (three years ago)

lol

StanM, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 09:40 (three years ago)

Bit of a cheat really. I put the pic into Google lens which threw up other pics of watch towers, one of which was remarkably similar looking...

I don't have time right now to post a pic, if someone else wants to have a go you're welcome, otherwise I'll post something tomorrow.

Love this long running game btw, thanks to cherry blossom for keeping it ticking over...

what gave it away?

StanM, Monday, 7 November 2022 08:43 (three years ago)

I snipped those two distincitve tall buildings and put them into Google Lens, it was the first hit

I'm not so into setting these so someone else can kindly proceed

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 7 November 2022 08:49 (three years ago)

Hmmmm, is Google lens ruining our game? I suggest the next person who puts one up checks first that there's no obvious google lens giveaway

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 7 November 2022 08:52 (three years ago)

Or we just agree not to use it.

ledge, Monday, 7 November 2022 08:53 (three years ago)

Or we just agree that it's a perfectly fair way to get the answer.

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 7 November 2022 09:14 (three years ago)

we've been reverse image searching bits of these photos for years
