i think it would be hilarious if anybody, ever, advised me to "embrace the darkness" more.

I wore two rats on my shoulders to work my restaurant shift last Halloween and it was suitably grim and disgusting.
Halloween is 1) secular and 2) not tethered to FAMILY and is therefore my fave holiday followed closely by Thanksgiving which is also secular and not always tied to family. For the non-family-having non-religious person, there’s no other day quite like it.

definitely feel like some of the energy extending it to an all-month thing is spurred on by queer and queer-adjacent ppl trying to turn it into their own version of christmas. that energy is why i can get behind it, even though i'm not a big halloween celebrator irl (like not at all, who has the fucking energy to celebrate holidays for god's sake).

i'm definitely leaning into the "found family" thing lately, for the last decade with my ex it was the two of us against the world and that's not... really a thing anymore. so this year some folks in my friend group are doing T4Thanksgiving and I'm sure I'll wind up doing that.

International Workers' Day is another one of the big queer holidays, for some reason it hasn't quite taken off in the United States yet. well, me and my friends will keep celebrating at least!

i like may day and iwd. i wish i were around more people who celebrated them. nominally progressive people here are still v. conservative. even american-flagged-over labor day is still barely acknowledged where i am. every year my supervisor makes sure we all know she doesn't believe it should be a holiday.

I worked from 1997 to 2016 at a large company, and Halloween went from being "just another day" to a festivity where entire floors were decorated and everyone was expected to compete in costume contests. Year by year it felt like creeping infantilization.

I've never liked dressing up but Halloween parties were usually a good time before everyone had kids and we all got boring and way more sober.

I'll still rep for Christmas when it comes to holidays, despite everything - if you can divorce yourself from the commercialism and competitive decorating it can still feel like a few days of pure goodwill toward your fellow man. Plus A Christmas Carol still owns.
