as carnivals go halloween not great but better than nothing
carnival under our system inevitably as pushy as everything else
jack-o-lanterns p cool and as their construction is laborious and their undisgusting lifespan limited you still in my experience don't see them irl outside a fairly compressed and reasonable timeframe-- emojis of course not limited in the same way
gotta say i don't think i should have heard all of target's halloween section's life-size animatronic jugband skeleton's lines of bone-related patter before october 1. would have preferred something to look forward to

The biggest problem with Halloween is that you age out of trick-or-treating right as you've learnt your neighbourhood and you can really start to dominate the game
― jmm, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 17:38 (one year ago) link
also when you get good enough at gore makeup to scare the shit out of your neighbors, they hit you with bats
― stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 17:49 (one year ago) link
my problem is if I don't get any haribo multipacks in I'll get 10 trick-or-treaters knocking at the door and you can't answer it not knowing what the trick part is. It's quite a nuisance really. Whenever I do get them in nobody calls, and then I end up overdosing on haribo for a few days and feeling genuinely ill for it. It does help having an oversized black Labbie that barks very loudly in the front window when kids walk up the path, in fact he hates kids.

lol I just got an upset stomach last night due to the minipacks of Haribo

it's as addictive as the crack pipe, just one more hit/packet of teddy bears - this will be my last hit -honest!

I think Halloween has ascended in cultural prominence for exactly one reason: it is comparatively secular.
When I was a child (several centuries ago), American society was presumed to be 97% Christian, 2% Jewish, and 1% "miscellaneous other." So a typical school "holiday" concert had eight Christmas songs, three winter songs, and one Hanukkah song, and was therefore deemed inclusive.
That shit will no longer fly in the world my kids inhabit. In spring 2012, my daughter's kindergarten teacher innocently planned an "egg hunt." She was quickly (and rightly) smacked down; there was enough protest that it was rebranded as a "pirate treasure hunt."
Non-religious occasions - Earth Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Arbor Day, Halloween, New Year's - have taken on increased significance as we (rightly) back away from the assumption that almost everyone is Christian (except for a few people who are Jewish and an even smaller number of people who are, yikes, Muslim).

haribo like charon and paddington bear, gently ushering mortals to the other side
― mark s, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 18:17 (one year ago) link
its made of jellied evil
Kids and grown-ups love it so, though. Says so right on the package.

I once did some work on the bus stop lighting by the Haribo factory in Pontefract. It smells of pure evil for a square mile around that place - it's awful. A similar smell to when you are near an industrial chemical plant that makes paint and acid!
― calzino, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 18:22 (one year ago) link
Haribo are delicious, when you have the three or four pieces you're supposed to have. once you have past that threshold, your mouth and stomach start to say "ease up pardner", and you keep shoveling it in anyway.

stopped the second coming right then and there
xp to trenchant i guess but: social media and end stage capitalism have made all non-religious american holidays insufferable by inflating their active timeline to approximately one full month of preparation, purchase and wallow

the performative Halloween fetishists annoy me because they post about it daily, the Spirit Halloween memes, but then like everyone else, they go to one Halloween party, they put out candy for the kids, and that's it.
if yr really as spooky-ooky-Halloween as you say you should be in costume scaring people on the highway and running them off the road

ok i was ringing this bell in the other thread but halloween is GAY GAY FUCKING GAY
like obviously if you're not out as _trans_ it's the one day where you can do gender diverse presentation and only get a _few_ weird looks but even if you're not trans, halloween is the one queer holiday the cishets reluctantly acknowledge
it's also our last line of defense against Santa's Claw taking over the entire fucking year, so you'd better be fucking grateful for us witches

definitely feel like some of the energy extending it to an all-month thing is spurred on by queer and queer-adjacent ppl trying to turn it into their own version of christmas. that energy is why i can get behind it, even though i'm not a big halloween celebrator irl (like not at all, who has the fucking energy to celebrate holidays for god's sake).

I personally love Halloween I just want people to embrace the darkness more.
No comedy mustache, create an extra papier mache head, work a shift as Publix dressed as Leatherface

it's true that many people could do with more darkness in their lives.
― ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 5 October 2022 23:40 (one year ago) link
i think it would be hilarious if anybody, ever, advised me to "embrace the darkness" more.
i don't think that'll ever happen.

I wore two rats on my shoulders to work my restaurant shift last Halloween and it was suitably grim and disgusting. Halloween is 1) secular and 2) not tethered to FAMILY and is therefore my fave holiday followed closely by Thanksgiving which is also secular and not always tied to family. For the non-family-having non-religious person, there’s no other day quite like it.

i'm definitely leaning into the "found family" thing lately, for the last decade with my ex it was the two of us against the world and that's not... really a thing anymore. so this year some folks in my friend group are doing T4Thanksgiving and I'm sure I'll wind up doing that.
