sknybrg, Monday, 3 October 2022 05:04 (three years ago)

Wondered something about the end there do they get their shoes back or did they get washed away. Seemed water came in faster than expected. Just would have compounded the situation or ah well another adversity for comradeship to get them through. Quite apart from getting home.

Stevolende, Monday, 3 October 2022 05:14 (three years ago)

i assume yes lol

like it’s not the kind of show to tell you everything anyway, some conclusions you just have to draw on their own

i saw two teenage girls at the supermarket chips aisle trying to decide what to buy

one girl walked up and down the aisle boredly punching every bag of chips

then she saw what she wanted but was too short to reach, jumped up on the lowest shelf to grab it, the front of the shelf fell off and a bunch of chips tumbled to the floor

they laughed & ran off & i pissed myself laughing it was so dumb

i felt like the spirit of willie jack waz with these girls somehow even though they were latina

This show really nails being a teen better than most shows. But that may just be because this show is better than most shows in pretty much every regard.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 October 2022 12:17 (three years ago)

I went to a powwow this weekend and one of the merch tables was selling "Don't Be A Shitass" window decals. I've been to a bunch of powwows and never heard the term before this show so it seems to be creeping out of oklahoma.

S3E3 is so devastating, so good… i fell apart all the way through

but the way he kept such a gentle touch, the interactions between the kids, the alien voices of the nuns, “keep smiling” … incredible. and Deer Lady, just an incredible representation & such a great way to tell this story

how this show doesn’t own every emmy category every year it’s been running is baffling to me

beautiful post by harjo about the ep here:
the comments are worth yr time too

like in inexperienced and/or non indigenous hands, this would have been a horribly retraumatizing after school special … harjo makes such sensitive, good choices, like he is always leading with his community first, this show has such a huge heart

i couldn’t stop thinking about that episode & went down a rabbithole finding out about one of these schools in northeast california at Fort Bidwell (ran from 1898 and closed in 1931). Not a ton of info around but the vibe is grim, obviously.

And shit like this here in Sacramento County “August 1921, the California legislature amended the School Law of California so that "The governing body of a school district shall have power to exclude children of filthy or vicious habits, or children suffering from contagious or infectious diseases, and also to establish separate schools for Indian children and for children of Chinese, Japanese or Mongolian parentage. When such schools are established, Indian children or children of Chinese, Japanese or Mongolian parentage must not be admitted into any other school." (from https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/5views/5views4h16.htm)

i mean, i knew a lot of this already but still there is always something about seeing it so coldly codified that always fucks me up.

i’m one behind but the 70’s ep was great

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 2 September 2023 04:43 (two years ago)

Some eclectic listening included. Suicide & 13th Floor Elevators. Nuggets had meant people were listening to garage psych again I guess as in people who hadn't discovered it for themselves. But did strike me as pretty cool for a bunch of rock heads. Great to hear though.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 7 September 2023 17:40 (two years ago)

We just watched the '70s episode, which was good; we've been taking our time with this final season.

I was thinking back to the official "Last of Us" podcast, where they talked about how wide they had to cast their net to find a 10-year old Black deaf actor, and even then only managed to find just one. This show, with (essentially) an all-Native cast, has had nothing but great acting across the board from (mostly) relative unknowns. There are about as many Native Americans as there are deaf people, and it couldn't be easy to whittle that block down to the specifics (acting ability, age, gender, etc.) called for by the show, so shout out to the casting director.

I've been watching the dumb-as-shit Apple TV show The Last Frontier and I don't think I'm gonna make it to the end, but Dallas Goldtooth is in it as the protagonist's #2 and he's really good.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 9 December 2025 04:57 (five months ago)

one of the Native characters in this week’s Welcome to Derry ep called the other Natives “shitasses” and i did a little cheer lol
