❗It is very sad to hear the passing away of Madingo Afework.

Madingo, the Melvin Franklin of #Ethiopia singing many melodious songs with his deep voice had many popular ballads that made him star for decades.

Rest In Peace! pic.twitter.com/xG9WCiCsL5

Coolio stayed at a Holiday Inn I worked at, let's say in 2005. I didn't see him, but other folks did, and apparently he was really chill and down to earth, hung out for a big part of the evening with one of the security guards, etc.

RIP to Gene Youngblood - I found "Expanded Cinema" in my high school library in freshman year and took it out a couple of times, enthralled and despairing of ever seeing any of the films described in the book.

Loretta Lynn, 90

Loretta Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner’s daughter whose frank songs about life and love as a woman in Appalachia pulled her out of poverty and made her a pillar of country music, has died. She was 90. https://t.co/ATdwml7dpA

Aw man, RIP to Loretta. I spent much of my life actively avoiding country music because of associations with assholes I grew up around, so I didn't approach her on my own until that Jack White produced record, but do have fond memories of my uncle playing her Conway Twitty duet eight tracks in his pickup truck.

(xposts) Ditto re Gene Youngblood. Expanded Cinema was one of the first film books I ever laid eyes on, probably around the same time as Myonga. Somewhere along the way I picked up a used copy, but I've never read it.

Back to Loretta Lynn.

Coal Miner's Daughter is one of the (very!) few biopics that makes me grin from end to end watching it; it takes its cue from her smile, her determination.

I spent much of my life actively avoiding country music because of associations with assholes I grew up around

I didn't grow up with/around any country listeners, but "associations with assholes" is exactly why I avoid it now. That said, Loretta Lynn has long been on my very short list of country singers I actively enjoy. Her late '60s/early '70s stuff is amazing. There's so much wicked joy in her voice when she sings some of her most feminist/rebellious/punch-you-in-the-face songs. She was fantastic.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 14:50 (three years ago)

I was one of those snobs who raised an eyebrow when The Kids bought the Jack White-produced VLR, but it still has several of Lynn's best self-written songs. "Miss Being Mrs" is one of the most shattering depictions of widowhood I've heard. https://

I don't (or didn't) like the Jack White record, but she's obviously all-time, and has been for some time.

she endorsed Trump and was campaigning for him at her gigs, great voice but a total a-hole.

Yeah was just saying that on FB -- a biopic that actually works and Sissy just nailed it. Levon Helm was brilliant casting in turn.

The Trump turn I take on board, but I didn't throw out my VU records when Mo Tucker went Tea Party; what's past is not always present.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 October 2022 15:28 (three years ago)

Think she even did a good collabo with Elvis Costello too.

Elvis Costello never did anything good, my friend. If anything, Loretta Lynn carried Costello
