Coolio stayed at a Holiday Inn I worked at, let's say in 2005. I didn't see him, but other folks did, and apparently he was really chill and down to earth, hung out for a big part of the evening with one of the security guards, etc.

RIP to Gene Youngblood - I found "Expanded Cinema" in my high school library in freshman year and took it out a couple of times, enthralled and despairing of ever seeing any of the films described in the book.

Aw man, RIP to Loretta. I spent much of my life actively avoiding country music because of associations with assholes I grew up around, so I didn't approach her on my own until that Jack White produced record, but do have fond memories of my uncle playing her Conway Twitty duet eight tracks in his pickup truck.

I didn't grow up with/around any country listeners, but "associations with assholes" is exactly why I avoid it now. That said, Loretta Lynn has long been on my very short list of country singers I actively enjoy. Her late '60s/early '70s stuff is amazing. There's so much wicked joy in her voice when she sings some of her most feminist/rebellious/punch-you-in-the-face songs. She was fantastic.

I was one of those snobs who raised an eyebrow when The Kids bought the Jack White-produced VLR, but it still has several of Lynn's best self-written songs. "Miss Being Mrs" is one of the most shattering depictions of widowhood I've heard. https://

Man. Jaime Jarrin retires and then Laboe goes. At least Jarrin's still with us but with Vin out too that's the last of the great LA radio voices of that generation gone from the airwaves, really.

I interviewed Jenni Rivera in 2010 and she talked about how the only way she would ever make an English-language album would be if it was a collection of oldies, and she specifically said "like you might hear on the Art Laboe show."
