Also a quick shoutout to the soundtracking, my jaw hit the floor when Spacemen 3 swelled up in the roofing episode.
More importantly, they're playing a shit-ton of music by Native artists who would never get a sync in any other show. That's bound to represent a serious paycheck for a bunch of them.

the two who would have been their "sidekicks" on a traditional show, Willie Jack and Cheese, are the smart, deep ones who I want to see more of.
i've been thinking about this too. it's just gradually happened, not as a gimmick for one episode but for long stretches.
when Willie Jack was surrounded by the medicine people spirits i was fully crying
same here

my kids were like "this show started out silly but it changed, it's pretty deep now" and i'm like what about the last episode where the cop take drugs?? and they're like oh yeah

Willie Jack is my absolute favourite, the hunting episode is so beautiful and profound.

Wow, another great episode, this show is incredible!
Seriously, though, Willie Jack gets the heavy stuff, doesn't she? This ep we finally learn her real name, too, which was a subtle payoff to her hilarious Native in-joke nickname.
My favorite thing about the show, besides it being perfect, is how they keep expanding the circle of adults. People out of the picture, from ghost ancestors to relatives, seamlessly brought in and connected to the story like they were never gone. I might have missed who the woman in prison was, how she was related, but it didn't really matter. As she says to Willie Jack at the end, she's a grandmother, she's an aunty, she's a cousin ...

Wondered something about the end there do they get their shoes back or did they get washed away. Seemed water came in faster than expected. Just would have compounded the situation or ah well another adversity for comradeship to get them through. Quite apart from getting home.

S3E3 is so devastating, so good… i fell apart all the way throughbut the way he kept such a gentle touch, the interactions between the kids, the alien voices of the nuns, “keep smiling” … incredible. and Deer Lady, just an incredible representation & such a great way to tell this storyhow this show doesn’t own every emmy category every year it’s been running is baffling to me beautiful post by harjo about the ep here: the comments are worth yr time toohttps://www.instagram.com/p/CvyFOJNLh_5/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

i couldn’t stop thinking about that episode & went down a rabbithole finding out about one of these schools in northeast california at Fort Bidwell (ran from 1898 and closed in 1931). Not a ton of info around but the vibe is grim, obviously. And shit like this here in Sacramento County “August 1921, the California legislature amended the School Law of California so that "The governing body of a school district shall have power to exclude children of filthy or vicious habits, or children suffering from contagious or infectious diseases, and also to establish separate schools for Indian children and for children of Chinese, Japanese or Mongolian parentage. When such schools are established, Indian children or children of Chinese, Japanese or Mongolian parentage must not be admitted into any other school." (from https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/5views/5views4h16.htm) i mean, i knew a lot of this already but still there is always something about seeing it so coldly codified that always fucks me up.

Hoping everybody in it is going onto further projects. & somebody else is going to make a non tokenist indigenous show that Red Nation will love. They get pretty scathing to exploitative shows cashing in on indigenous culture.
Will miss this definitely so hope there's something coming to distract that.
― Stevo, Thursday, 28 September 2023 06:28 (two years ago)
This was of course beautiful, though I maintain it feels like it ended a little too soon. On the other hand, I kind of like it ending that way. It feels simultaneously incomplete but satisfying, like we were privy to this special thing that could only last so long before it moved on, like a passing natural phenomenon.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 September 2023 02:11 (two years ago)
I love how they lowkey had all 4 characters grow in hugely significant ways when you look at them in the finale vs s1e1 but they did it without it feeling growth was the obvious goal idkalso kinda like irl life maybe

I can't show Deer Lady to a tenth-grade class, right? Because of the thing at the end that the whole episode is building to?

― sknybrg, Friday, 29 September 2023 03:56 (two years ago)
Several torrents supposed to be episode 10 are actually 9 I think. Unless they repeated the beginning to do a sliding doors/what if thing.& I haven't seem if Ireland is up to date or even has the show otherwise. Ho hum.
― Stevo, Friday, 29 September 2023 07:24 (two years ago)
Gus van Zandt shot by shot remake
Benjamin/Warhol mass production.Shade of Borges meticulous reproduction.
Or just annoying glitch oversight that at least a couple of different releases of the same episode are wrong in the same way. Thought they were done independently so not sure how that works.

Kept putting off watching the finale - didn’t really want to get to the end. It was a beautiful episode. Think they had most (?all) the key characters at the funeral. Loved the way the visuals slowly faded out at the end. And that the lead for the episode was Willie Jack, the most overtly community-focused character.
