Guess the City

Not anywhere specific, but it gave me Scottish central belt vibes at first too. The low stone wall feels more Northern England though somehow.

It's a slightly bleak but comforting vista.

Almost certainly Sheffield, think I know the general area too but need to dig a bit.

landscape looks like sheffield. crookes is a good shout. i'm not 100% convinced by the housing, but difficult to see where else it could be. too big for glossop, too hilly for the other cities in that part of the world.

Reminds me of some views of Bath.

My wife said Bath to be fair, I've just been busy and didn't look into it further.

There is one tower block in Bath and I've just scouted all the straight across crossroads that could face it with no success.

There's two somewhat distinctive looking churches in the first pic. The square tower and smoke-blackened exterior of the one on the left are not uncommon, i haven't found anything that really matches the squat character of the one on the right.

In terms of synchronicity I have just seen this on twitter via a retweet taken in Crookes which only makes me think I was right first time

based on the Bole Hills Aerial Scenic Point (360 aerial photo on google maps) I'm going to guess that Sheffield is slightly flatter than these two pics.

the tower blocks look kind of weird for sheffield in that they seem quite a long way out of town. still wondering if it's a smaller city.

Think that might be Barrow Bridge Chimney in Bolton and there is generally a run-down Lancashire feel, but had a look and can't find any vantage point anything like that

i could be wrong but that chimney looks pretty square. not that i have any better suggestions, google (or yandex) pretty hopeless at showing tall square red brick chimneys in a search for same.

I was beginning to think the same thing! But checking back through the 2022 entries and it turns out that 5 of the previous 24 cities were British (bolded) so it might be they stick in the memory more

No idea where this is but after taking a close look at the white van's rearviewmirror I'm convinced there's a yellow-ish ghost in there.

Since I still have no clue I've been clicking around and most places feel too flat. The only thing that felt remotely like "this is the kind of hills & city size we're looking for" was Huddersfield.

I looked at Huddersfield before, there's a church that could be the one in the first pic, and two chimneys that look right, but I can't find the other church or make it fit.

i once slept on a bench in leamington spa.

four = definitely not sheffield. looks too big for glossop, but too isolated/rural/small for anything else i can think of.

is this Brigadoon, the town that only appears once every 100 years? Since nobody seems to recognise it :-/
