xp the point isn't that there are plenty more bootlickers out there, but that the queue itself is being used as a bullshit argument
― feudal vague (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 September 2022 10:29 (three years ago)
just heard Conte joined the crowd outside Buckingham Palace, the sad bastard. Not a good idea to bow to people when you are wearing a syrup our kid!

when they're interviewing the people who are queuing to see the coffin, or going to see the proclamations of the new king in their town centre and stuff, particularly when they've brought their kids along with them, they say stuff like "I wanted to bring my kids to see this because it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives", and I agree that before republicans get to down-hearted they should consider that for a lot of people this is less about any kind of fanatic devotion to the monarchy and more about wanting to be part of an historic moment, the fact that it's been so long since we had a change of monarch makes it seem more like an historic moment, like if Halley's comet was going past you might feel inclined to watch it even if you don't particularly care about comets, but because you knew this would be your only chance to see it. Or how you might want to watch as the odometer on your car turns over to a number with lots of zeros.
― soref, Friday, 16 September 2022 10:51 (three years ago)
though of course the next change of monarch is probably going to come around a lot sooner unless Charles lives to be about 150
― soref, Friday, 16 September 2022 10:53 (three years ago)
could be next week if C3 has to use a fountain pen before then

His mother lived to 96, his father lived to 99, his granny lived to 101. I think he's going to be around for a while yet.

> I wanted to bring my kids to see this because it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives
i was taken into town to see the queen give out maundy money at the abbey in 1971 when i was (does sums) 3 and a half and... i can't remember if i remember it or whether i "remember" it because i've seen photos of it.
― koogs, Friday, 16 September 2022 11:15 (three years ago)
xp yes, but even if he lives another 25 years or so his passing is probably not going to have the same once-in-a-lifetime feeling as the Queen's, where there's hardly anyone alive who can clearly remember a time when she *wasn't* the monarch.
I guess even if people queuing to see the coffin are motivated less by a devotion to the crown and more by desire to part of an historic moment, that's still crypto-reactionary because the desire to be part of an historic moment requires the existence and continuation of institutions like the monarchy, requires there not to be a year zero where everything is swept away - the wish to say 'I was there when x happened' is inherently conservative because it requires continuity, that people in the future will still care about x, that it will continue to be relevant?
― soref, Friday, 16 September 2022 11:24 (three years ago)
i wd poll how many in the queue also haven't told their kids that santa doesn't exist, what ppl say they believe is situational and transactional!
― mark s, Friday, 16 September 2022 11:25 (three years ago)
yes i am more exercised abt the santa fib than the monarchy, no i dont have kids WHAT OF IT
― mark s, Friday, 16 September 2022 11:27 (three years ago)
I'm pretty sure there could be a ticketing system where you book a slot, turn up, shuffle through and go, but there wouldn't be the visual symbol that looks so impressive on the drone footage.
Maybe the app would crash, people wld block-book, i dunno.

Heartfelt words from a local FB group:A Royal FarewellTears rained down and clouds turned black as coal,As the heavens opened, to receive your noble soul.A familiar stranger, loved by all throughout the years,Your image fills so many homes, displayed on souvenirs. You were always there, a celebrity before the term was coined,Our nation has lost a mother, and in grief we all are joined. We remember your devotion, and smile despite the pain,And relive the grief for others we have lost, and weep again. As the world marks your final journey, the church bells ring, We turn our faces to the sun, and cry ‘God save the King’.

and then a pause for the changing of the guard, exactly as he gets to the front of the queue. coincidence? or conspiracy?

queueing no, claiming any act of twee deference thinly veiling a boiling ocean of violence is uniquely British yes
― feudal vague (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 September 2022 14:35 (three years ago)
Are British people unique in taking pride in our ability to queue? There’s a good Russian queuing novel: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=wEhRAQAAMAAJ

Beckham was in the queue since 2AM ? For someone who could have gotten the VIP treatment, that IS kinda nice though

Literally the '200 channels nothing on" saying will come true on Monday.
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 16 September 2022 14:49 (three years ago)
saw beckham go through (not entirely realising it was him but wondering why the camera was so focused). do you think he queued all 8 or whatever hours?
some other vips came in about 2 minutes after him and took the outside route.
the tv listing magazine i bought this morning has nothing special on monday on any channel. probably went to print two weeks ago.
― koogs, Friday, 16 September 2022 14:49 (three years ago)
"Are British people unique in taking pride in our ability to queue?"
I've never heard any sort of queue discourse in the other two countries I've spent a significant amount of time in.

“Every time that we stood there when we wore those Three Lion shirts and I had my armband and we sang God Save Our Queen, that was something that meant so much to us.
So much so that Liverpool players had to be forced to sing it. Fuck off back to the States, Beckham.

Who cares about David Beckham and whether he queued or not, Jesus Christ. His tantrums at not being given a knighthood in the leaked emails are pretty funny though.
― barry sito (gyac), Friday, 16 September 2022 15:08 (three years ago)
xpseriously considering phoning sky and asking for some reduction in this month's bill. I don't pay stupid amount per year for sports channels to be force fed a fucking funeral that I can watch on every other channel on the PVR if I so chose. luckily I am working and will miss this farrago of nonsense. if it I was home I'd be raging.
― oscar bravo, Friday, 16 September 2022 15:08 (three years ago)
also when this happened on Thursday Sky had a breaking news banner along the bottom of the screen on Sky golf saying to turn over to news channel for an important breaking story leading my mum to worry that the Ukrainian nuclear plant had gone into meltdown. luckily it was only this.
― oscar bravo, Friday, 16 September 2022 15:12 (three years ago)
Oh I’m sorry ob, that’s horrible. They probably wouldn’t bother donning black tie for that, I’m guessing.
― barry sito (gyac), Friday, 16 September 2022 15:13 (three years ago)
Americans tend to want to buy their way to the front of the line (queue).
I spent years in Peru, where "queueing" consists mostly of everyone trying to cram to the front.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 16 September 2022 15:13 (three years ago)
And ex-military would have been in the fast-track queueu
― Mark G, Friday, 16 September 2022 15:40 (three years ago)
Peruvian queuing is the way it should be imo.
Lol
There's literally no reason a queue should ever be 24 hours long in this day and age. We have the technology to do timed slots or tickets or whatever with minimal fuss. The queue is so fucking long *by design*.Ridiculous country.— Sudden Beth (@bethdanger) September 16, 2022
