yeah i tend to trust magnus on this, and a number of other top players seem to be suspicious of hans too, but its a pretty weird situation where magnus is just being extremely passive aggressive

mb magnus is convinced that hans is cheating but doesnt have any hard proof

he admitted to cheating. twice. in tournaments. and chess.com implied it was worse than that! it's insane he's even invited to these tournaments.

getting caught cheating online doesnt seem to be that big of a deal in the chess world for whatever reason, theres other players whove cheated online but still get invited to live tourneys, tho i dont think theres anyone at the absolute top level, part of it i think is theres no formal admin relationship between the sites and fide

another thing that complicates it is those cheating instances were when he was a child

COVID changed everything because tournaments went online. He wasn’t cheating in marches to boost his Elo, he was cheating in tournaments and accepting cash prizes. This also wasn’t when he was much younger. The last incident happened at the beginning of COVID.

yeah he was 16 at the beginning of covid, and fwiw hes been rolling since tourneys have gone live again, so if hes not cheating over the board then hes prob not cheating online either hes just that good

I like to imagine Magnus is just salty as can be and is claiming foul to protect his ego. I say this in admiration to Magnus because Lord knows I would do the same in his position.

Seriously tho, Kinda messed up to let cheaters in. Don't care if it was when you were a kid or whatever. Bans need to be made public and enforced. Magnus is able to do what he is doing (and imo is justified) because FIDE and Chess.com are giving too much leeway and not being transparent with their response to cheating (speaking of the past). Hope this fixes things and we get some public stoning's in the future.

Is Magnus mainly mad that someone in his team leaked his opening prep? it seems too implausable that someone would be able to engine cheat during an on the board classical game.

you could do it, some of the things people have done to cheat at gambling are unbelievable, chess would be relatively easy

one interesting thing i read is magnus before this whole thing was speculating about cheating and said that hed only need to have two or three moves a game given to him to be totally unbeatable

and people have done engine cheating over the board before fwiw tho not at as a high profile a tourney as sinquefield

LOL. I didn’t know about the Dlugy relationship. Absolutely incredible. He’s such a wildly shady character. In addition to cheating (and I suspect most people don’t know this), he’s been arrested multiple times for every financial crime imaginable.

I was depressed yesterday so I put on some Tim Buckley and poked around the slides. A lot of the analysis is suspect but I think the conclusion is the same if the analysis was sound: Hans cheated frequently and cheated during tournaments.

wonder what fides gonna do, i dont think they have a policy for cheating thats not at the tourneys they run, and it could be harder for them to find evidence of cheating in their tourneys since they have so many fewer games to look at, they might just say fuck him anyway tho idk
